Recently everything I've tried to write has turned out horrible. No matter what I try I can't write a decent passage about anything. I'm ashamed to look at my work, I've never felt that I've been great but now, no matter how good the idea is, the result on paper is so bad that my hands should be cut off. It's not exactly writers block because it's not the bank page that bothers me it's what's on it. And the worst part of it is I can't think of any way to improve what I've written, and all around me people seem to be able to write decent pieces instantly. Has anyone else felt this before? and how did you deal with it?
Don't cut your hands off! If you do that, you will never be able to write again, and that is not the solution to your problem. All of us go through phases were we write things we don't care about. Repeat: All of us. But here is the solution to your problem:
Just keep writing.
Just keep writing!
Just keep writing, writing, writing...
What do we do?
We WRITE!
I have felt the same way that you have felt. I have literally deleted thousands of words because I didn't think it was good enough. But then I realized that the more you write, the more you write well. The more you write, the more you know about your writing style. Your grammar improves. You discover things about yourself that you didn't really know. Even if you feel like your piece of writing is bad-so what? You don't have to show anyone what you have written, anyway. The only critic is yourself until you post something. Write a little something every day. It doesn't have to be coherent, it doesn't have to be good. Just try your hardest and you will get past the writer's block. If you really want to write well, you will. Just keep at it. And whatever you do, don't delete, don't erase, and don't burn your work. These are things that you will be able to look back on as you grow as a writer. So why would you want to burn important lessons that you have made yourself? Don't be afraid to ask for help, either. So write a lot, talk a lot, and drink lots of lemonade. You'll get there. Best wishes,
Ask around, it happens to everyone at least from time to time…well it happens to me for sure. Sometimes, it means taking a little break, hiding the pencils, paper, and pens (and knives) and NOT thinking about writing. But not for too long.
Give it a week, maybe two, and eventually you’ll have your mojo back. Taking a break means that when you go back to the page, you’ll have fresh eyes and fresh ideas. And they’ll seem like, ubber awesome because, you know what, that stuff you were writing last week (which was nothing) wasn’t nearly as good.
It worked for me when I went through a phase like that…though mostly by accident. The school play took up a month and a half of my time and I couldn’t distract myself from the play to write. Well, I got back to the page and was pushing out fresh, refreshed, ideas.
Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.
