Hi people, I'm in a band and have been for the last 2 years or so, we recently lost our singer and me and the guitarist (i play bass) have decided on going about writing some lyrics for some new material (its a metal band). The theme is mainly about greedy people and how the world seems to be heading in a downward spiral. About how if people don't start changing for the better of mankind, the earth and society as we know it today could be in a bit of a pickle. Just wondering on any ways to go about writing some meaningful stuff that could get through to some listeners.
Any replies are much appreciated thank you.
regards, Pat

I'm not sure if this will help at all, but I think maybe instead of focusing 100% on the lyrics to remember the music! The music is all the feeling after all. In fact, when I turn the radio on I barey listen to the lyrics (most likely because they're horrible) but just the beat of the music! I don't know if this helped at all, but I have an older brother in like two bands I think so I know a little bit about this stuff... xD PM for anything!

I don't really have any specific advice, but I do recommend you to listen to the kind of music you wanna write.

Some examples to start you off...

- "All We Know" by Paramore

- "Crawling" by Linkin Park

- "Sober" by Kelly Clarkson

- "Ignorance" by Paramore

- "Monarch" by Natalie Walker

These cover the subjects you talk about in different ways. Make sure you have variety, so you can figure out what perspective you have to write.

Also, I agree with Winie. You have to focus on the music, also. If you want it to sound angry, put in some loud, angry guitars (ex: "Ignorance") or if you want it to sound heartbroken, slow down the tempo (ex: "Monarch").

I hope this helps!

Well we have written 16 songs of music in total, we been focusing on that aspect for the last year or so. Im into alot of bands, but i really look up to Korn and tool and other alt metal such as that. The kind of music we have written is like offbeat alternative bassy metal with some pretty fast double kick in there. So its pretty angry music and we just want to get some lyrics down for the next singer to come along and learn. So its ours and not some control freak singer who dictates everything.

pat
