Preface
This was our sanctuary, an abandoned centre, the only place we could hide from those who sought us out, and who hunted us…
We spent most of the Summer days lounging out on the roof, playing games, sports, reading, studying, working, cleaning and training, all the stuff we had to do and all that we wanted to do, but thankfully we had power coming to the centre, and if we didn’t, I always had a crystal, or some form of power, so we’d always be happy, even in winter.
We are the Renegades, better known as the Renegade Children… A group of teenagers and children where men and women, boys and girls, were all treated as equals, unlike the rest of the world, where men were superior, divided into classes by wealth and fortune, and then divided further according to strength. Women just fell below even the poorest and weakest of men, even being married to a rich man, or even daughter to one, never changed a woman’s status.
I think that idea is completely pointless! We’re in the 21st century! Women do all the hard work! And men take all the credit for what we do. If it were up to me, Men would have to do the same work that the women did! Why is it that men got the easy way out? They thought they were stronger than women, smarter, luckier and all the crap that they weren’t! I was stronger than most of the men, my father and brother included, I just never got the chance to show them just how strong I was!
Why was I never allowed to show who I was? I wasn’t daddy’s little trophy, I wasn’t just there to be called pretty, and I sure as hell wasn’t there to sit on his lap and act like the perfect little daughter.
I’m Alice, leader of the Renegade’s; I’m also one of the oldest. We’re still not sure whether I’m younger than Sam, Jared and the new boy, but never the less, our arguments, which are really more like debates, never get out of hand. Next is Ruka, fourth oldest. Then Dean, Sam’s younger brother. The two have stayed together, and had come from one of the poorest families, the most troubled too. Their parents used all the money they got on alcohol and the things they needed, leaving Sam to look after Dean. Erya, sixth. Lucy, Jake and Remmy come next. And finally, Jet, the youngest of the Renegades.
I took in everyone here, they all came from poor families, where they never had much of anything, food, water, anything a young child should deserve.
I know all of their skills and vice versa. They all like me and the little ones love me… But that’s because they don’t know my secret…
