I'm writing mom a mothers day poem, but I am stuck, could I perhaps have word suggestions, phrase suggestions, etc? anything to help? It's unedited, the rhythm is off, and I'm stuck half way through - please help, anything. I really don't want to write a cheesy -
'On this special day,
I have lots to say,
You are the worlds greatest mom,
You can do no wrong.

You're so pretty, and very kind,
A beautiful heart, soul and mind,
Thank you for all you do,
All I have to say is, I love you.'

or something ridiculous like that. I want something different, and I'm just a bit blocked. Here is the letter I'm writing with it for mom, that explains the background of the poem, so perhaps you could suggest ways to include these ideas in it?
Letter:
Dear mom,
You have brought me up into this world, teaching me, guiding me and savouring life with me; creating memories of laughter, love and happiness, of what I could not have experienced without you in my life. I appreciate every small thing you do, I smile when you smile and am content when you are. You have had such an impact on so many people's lives and especially mine, and I can't thank you enough or express how you make me feel. You have fufilled the task of being a mother and a best friend, understanding me on levels no one else ever could - we have a bond unlike any other, because you aren't just my mother, you are my everything.
It's difficult to phrase emotion, therefore I cannot explain how much I love you, nor how much you mean to me, the volume of love I hold is too big, infact, thinking of it brings complete distortion, complexity and confusion around my mind. I could not put it in numbers, I could not put it in words, I could not put it in actions but I could try. The best way to explain, is through those three little words, they mean so much, and I suppose everybody uses them, but you know that it means more from me to you, because my love is so overpowering within myself, it's hard to project that simply.
So, I love you.
But not like anyone else loves their mother, just how I love you, which is bigger than anything you can experience.

Side note of the poem, I will put with it

Mother, this poem was based on the memories that I savoured as a child - the little things that had an impact on me. I remember digging my head into your chest, inhaling your beautiful scent as you held me, listening to your teeth chatter, your voicebox distort and your heart beat. I felt you breathe upon me, and although as a small child I did not understand the world, I was safe in your arms, and although I did not understand these words you voiced aloud, I understood you. I had always looked up to you, wondering how I ended up with such an amazing mother, how I was so lucky, because I truly am. You are honestly the best mother in the world, and I am not saying it as the cliche mother's day phrase, I honestly mean it, you are my everything and could never have brought me up in a better environment, or with more effort, or with more love, because you gave it your all. Thank you for being that homely scent that made me felt safe, those arms that cradelled and protected me, the breathe that let me know you were still there, the voice that I recognise and the heart that never stops beating love. Thank you for providing the basics that comes with parenting and the additional love of a mother. You have done amazingly.

Poem, HELP!

As a child, I lay my head to rest again your shoulder-

I inhaled your opium tainted aroma, to the rhythm of each pound,
The beauty and tranquility of that figure I admired, your heart's hypnotic sound.

I felt your tender kiss, your bittersweet breathe exhale above me-

Your porcelain mask sighed memories, moments, wonder and emotion,
Emerald eyes reflect infinate love, dedication and devotion.

The way you spoke was coherent, your voice a lullaby of adoration-

The ivory stained pearls clicked as you projected those words,

Poem comments-

I inhaled your opium tainted aroma, to the rhythm of each pound,

This line confuses me, and sounds rather negative. If you think she's going to like the reference to drugs, you can leave it in, but for me that's not something positive to say.

And "to the rhythm of each pound"... to me it sounds odd to be hearing a heartbeat (if that's what this is; I'm not sure) when your head is rested against her shoulder.

Your porcelain mask sighed memories

The comment about masks is the same as the comment about opium. Masks usually aren't associated with positive things, because a mask isn't who a person truly is. Again, if she'd like it, leave it in.

The poem as it stands sounds very distant and like you're trying too hard to be poetic. What I mean is, the language and images feel fancy just for the sake of being fancy, not like its a poem from the heart.

My biggest suggestion is to forget about trying to make this sound original and like a literary piece of art. Those can come later, when you're written out the basic emotions your childhood memories. Which means possibly writing one of those sappy cliched poems to begin with. It could also mean writing out a list of all memories and feelings associated with those memories, and turning that list into a proper poem. The idea is to get a structure in your head of what you want to write. Then you can focus on how you want to write it.

Comments on the note-

listening to your teeth chatter, your voicebox distort

"Teeth chatter" makes it sound like she was shivering while holding you, because chattering teeth are associated with being very cold. "Voicebox distort" also sounds really clinical and scientific, which I'm not sure if you want.

Good luck! PM me with questions. :)

just as a side note - opium as in, her perfume. she wears YSL opium perfume, ha. and that aroma always reminds me of her, and her homely scent.

i agree with the shoulder thing, i didnt really realise that. head to her chest, it should be.

i will change the porcelain mask bit, i honestly need to think of a new description for a face. voicebox distort is because when i rest my head on her chest, and she spoke, i heard what she said through her chest, but not very clear, and i heard her teeth urm, i cant think of the word, but well, that chattery sound.

thank you for your help.
