Flash Of Insight

Sitting on my couch, I was reaching for the remote when this strange old white guy barged in and shot up the place. He kicked down my apartment door and came running through the doorway at me on my couch, an assault rifle cradled in his arms. This strange man took a quick glance across the small living room and hosed me down, nailing me with bullets across my stomach. It didn’t bother me though; in fact I didn’t even flinch. I just stared at him, and with a taste of annoyance and blood oozing out of my belly I told him to get lost.
I’ve been seeing him over the course of the past month in this strange dream I keep on having. Each and every time I told him to get lost I would chase him out of my house. I’d run down the apartment steeps that lead to the landing on the first floor and follow him out into the open parking lot where it was raining. Watching him vanish into the distance, I would turn around to find myself in an entirely different location. I was in this dance studio, one of the ones that have a wall with a mirror running down an entire side so you could watch yourself dance. There seemed to be no ceiling though. Rain still splashed against my head and ran down the blades of my hair to form puddles on the tiled flooring. Turning yet again to find a way out of here, I found this beautiful woman approaching me from across the dance floor. She’d come right up to me, wearing a long dark dress accompanied with silver eyes, a wide smile, and golden hair. Reaching out her hands she would pick me right up and start to dance with me. I’m no professional at all when it comes to dancing, but for some reason each time I danced with her it felt like no work at all to swing around that wet room. I wasn’t sure how I felt about her either. Her silver lined eyes seemed dark and deep to me, and her golden hair always seemed to glisten in the rain. The thing about her that seemed to really get me caught up in how beautiful she could be was probably the way we embraced while dancing. I’m not really sure how to go about describing it, but there’s something magical in the way you hold someone while you dance. With the right grips you both seem to feel more naturally connected to one another, like a key fitting squarely into a lock. It pulls you both together, and makes you realize why people ever even thought about dancing in the first place.
Each time we danced I would eventually totally fall for her eyes and convince myself that she was astonishingly beautiful and that I must make a move on her. So I would reach my neck forward and try to kiss her. Every time I did this though I would never get to her lips though. She would turn into water and melt through our embodying dance grip and leave me there in that room alone with water swelling around my feet. I would knell down and try to kiss the water, not convinced that she was really gone that I would for the time being ever see her again. The only droplets I could remember from that point on were the ones forming from my eyes. Pulling myself together, I looked up from where I was crying to find myself yet again misplaced in my imagination. This time I was out in the local graveyard. Hoards of photographers draped in raincoats and umbrellas surrounded me, flashing their cameras and emitting flashes around me. If I didn’t hear my mother crying in the corner, I don’t think I would have noticed her. She was over by a tombstone sobbing her eyes out. I wanted to go over and comfort her, but I was having a hard time breaking through the mob of photographers. After wrestling my way through them I would come out of the crowd of people to find my mother lying over the tombstone, unconscious.
That’s how the dream always ended, and I never understood it. I couldn’t ever understand any of it. Having it so often though truly made me curious. It felt to me like my life was trying to tell me something, or that it was trying to lead me in a certain direction. All I can say is that after having that dream so many times I decided that if anything came up that was in any way retraceable to my dream I would follow my gut instincts and see what happened.
Things did happen though, and they started this morning. Today I woke up and was going to the store right down the street to fetch myself some milk for breakfast because last night I realized that I had run out and didn’t have time to get it before this morning. Walking into the convenience store I saw the wild man that had been shooting me in my dreams. He stood in line at the cash register, holding a bowl of cat food. That did nothing to deprive me of thinking he was innocent though. I instantly flung myself upon him and knocked him out with a quick blow to his temple. His body hit the store’s floor and everyone around us in line immediately jumped back in shock. Right after I punched him I just ran for the door because I knew if I didn’t someone would catch me and I’d be late for work. I ran out of the store and back down the street to my house. I’m sure the store manager will thank me though. That crazy guy must have had a gun in his pocket and he was just about to rob the store. No one ever suspects the man carrying cat food to be a potential threat. I bet you no one else would have thought about that except me.
It didn’t stop there. After I got into my business clothes and all saddled up for a day’s work I went out the door and hopped onto the city bus. My stop is on the end of the line, so normally I don’t see that many people on the bus riding into the city. Strangely enough, I saw the woman that I have been dancing with in my dreams sitting down towards the middle of the bus. I sat down across from her on the opposite side of the bus. This was so strange! I could hardly believe my eyes. She didn’t have silver eyes or golden hair like she did in the dream, but I could tell it was her because of all her other facial features. If I had just seen that other man in my dream today, what was holding me back from seeing her as well? I decided to take up the opportunity and ask if she was seeing anyone. Thankfully she wasn’t and we agreed to go out that evening for a bite to eat. It was almost too easy to get her phone number. I was stunned my luck was working out the way it was. How amazing was it that these things could happen to me! Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and it was such a thrill today to have these things line up the way they were.
Of course I couldn’t concentrate at work today. I was too excited about my blind date with this woman. Now that I think about it, is it really blind? I’ve seen her for over a month in my dreams. Does that translate into anything at all? Would it be too weird to tell her that I’ve known her for all this time and that we’ve been dancing for what seems like ages underneath a wet sky? I’m not sure. I have to give it a try though; opportunities never come up like this for me.
Heading over to the town square where I was going to meet her it started to rain. I waited a miserable forty-five minutes in the pouring rain for her to show up but she never did. She must have thought I was some type of creep and set me up. I can picture her never taking that same commute up into the city again just to avoid me on the bus. Walking back to my car in the rain I thought about what those dreams meant. The dream had warned me about the man at the store. What did it say about his intentions though? What told me to punch him merely because he had been killing me in my dreams? The same can be applied to the woman on the bus when I think about it now. Was all of this just a coincidence? Either way I was confused and felt that my life was playing some type of crude joke on me and I haven’t found the punch line yet.
Hoping into the car, I started off across town back towards my apartment. I saw an intersection coming up and slowed down to stop at the stop sign. As I moved across the intersection this van came around the corner like lightening right off the opposite side of the road. All the rain and frustration must have caught me off guard because before I knew it that van was going to smash right into my side. I see him now slowly approaching my passenger side, about to plow straight through my side window. It’s all happening in slow motion, and I can’t seem to find myself able to control anything. Now I know what the last part of the dream meant. I was certainty just about to die right now. All those photographers will surround my car and flash pictures of me thrown headfirst into the other guy’s car, and my mother will stand by my tombstone and cry over my early death. I hear people saying that life supposedly flashed before your eyes before you die, and now I believe them. Right now it feels to me that my life is flashing very slowly and at the same time very fast across my eyes. The only thing that I couldn’t understand is why fate wanted to take me so soon away from this earth. My life has flashed by so quickly that I don’t believe it ever existed. Maybe it was all just a dream, and I’ll wake up tomorrow morning.

Hiadel, I can't quite figure out whether your constant use of narrative summary is deliberate or accidental. So I have a question for you - Is there a reason why there is never any dialogue in your work? Is that something you do intentionally, or does it just happen that way?

There is some dialogue in some of my works, but not that much of it.

Is that a bad thing? I don't think it is.
