Chapter 4: What the death of a princess can do
I. the kings of uriel are interrupted
"So Gabriel, how is Protila coming along?" Taylor asked Gabriel from across the table. At this table sat the kings of Uriel. It was the second night of their discussions about Uriel.
“Oh it's fine, we still haven't completely excavated it but we have discovered to do so would end up destroying it. The city, as you know, has been habitable but it will never reach the maximum population,” replied Gabriel who, halfway through excavations, was named King of Protila when it was discovered that Gabriel was actually descended from the Aryan king who ruled the city before it was wiped off the maps.
“Well at least you have reached half the maximum population ay old boy?” Razor, who was sitting next to Taylor, joined the conversation.
“Yeah I know but it would be nice to have at least three quarters but I guess people stray from the city as there seems to be a rumour that it is cursed. I don't understand how it would be cursed! I mean I have been living there since me and Seven started helping with the excavations and nothing bad has happened to us.“
“Have you ever considered that you and Seven are the reasons they think it is cursed?” Rintol, sitting next to Hector of Whitehaven, also decided to join the conversation.
“What do you mean?” Gabriel questioned trying not to take it as an insult.
“Well come, my friend,” Rintol started calmly, “You really can't tell me that, even as king, you and Seven aren't still your old selves. Why when I visited last year I remember seeing you two do five pranks... three of which were done on me and Flavour!
“Your people may have just not realised that all this curse business is because of their rulers,” he sneered, making sure to add a subtle insult which Gabriel seemed to have taken as a compliment.
“Well come now do you really think we would have matured? I mean we could do a count of hands right now of who really thought we would give up our joy of being immature and no one would raise their hand,” Gabriel replied with a smile due to the whole room nodding in agreement.
“Now,” Taylor said changing the subject, “How is everything going with the giants and dragons of Oster?” he asked as everyone turned to Rintol.
“I think I have sorted everything out with the dragons. They are glad to finally have this whole matter finally sorted out as they were worried their ice relatives may one day be mistaken flying over our skies and than shot down which would've made everything much worse indeed.
“I decided a peace offering of 200 of my criminals who are waiting execution would help speed up matters and they graciously accepted.
“I hope to have final word from them within the week!
“The giants on the other hand were much more difficult to bargain with. We have sent a team to try and negotiate peace with them but no one has returned yet and its been three weeks now.
“Razor has agreed to send his best men tomorrow to try and aid my men,” He said finishing.
“Actually,” Razor began, “I have decided to lead my men as I feel we need someone of true power up there to show the giants we mean business. “Unfortunately this means we have to cut the discussions short but I shall be back in a week and we can continue them than. I doubt Taylor minds letting you all live in the castle until than?”
“Not if they don't mind?” he asked looking around the room at everyone who nodded in agreement.
“Good,” Taylor said to the room satisfied, “Does anyone have anything else to discuss?”
“I think I must bring up the desert that has been surrounding Grosswitch for the last two thousand years,” Started Grimtop king of Grosswitch, “I have been told time and time again that something would be done. At last years discussions I was told that Rantol high wizard of the town of Smintle would help start the recreation of the forest that once stood there those many years ago.
I wouldn't mind as much but the temperatures that has recently reached my part of Uriel has near killed many of my messengers coming home from across the land!”
As he finished speaking the door was slammed open which made everyone jump. In ran Marie looking hysterical with a piece of paper in hand.
“She's gone!” she said looking right at Taylor waving the paper.
“Who has?” he asked curiously.
“Tessa has! She left a note on her pillow. She.... she ran away,” Marie blurted out handing Taylor the note.
He read it but decided to remain calm as he looked around the room and asked “Has anyone here seen my daughter today?”
He received shaking heads all over the place until Thimothy spoke up.
“My daughter was asking earlier today if we had seen her too. Turns out she didn't turn up to the soccer game today which ended up with them breaking tradition!”
This shocked the whole room as they all knew that the kids followed tradition closer than any other incarnation of The Group.
“I think discussions for tonight are finished,” Taylor said to the room, “We must all search the castle thoroughly,” he said to everyone who agreed. Taylor knew that sending some guards to look for her wouldn't be enough for him and his friends wouldn't be able to sit by doing nothing when they could all be helping to look for her. They all got up and assured Marie that they would all make sure to search every inch of the castle and the grounds for Tessa.
II. Rintol and Flavour discuss life
Rintol exited the conference room followed by Taylor. They went separate ways after Rintol assured Taylor he'd search every secret passage in the castle as Rintol was the only one who knew them all by heart.
Rintol headed towards the west tower and walked casually until he came to the Goldwin staircase.
He walked down halfway than, standing on the spot, he turned to his right and saw nothing but a white wood wall.
He stepped forward and went through the wood as if it wasn't there.
“Ignite,” he said as he started on the trail and light came as if it had never been dark there before.
The trail went upwards before turning left in a curve than right until it dipped before finally becoming straight again. Rintol walked the straight path for two minutes before stopping.
He looked downwards and saw the dead body of Tessa. Good he thought to himself it is still here. This meant that, still, no one had found the passage way yet.
He put his ear on the wall to the left of him and listened but hearing nothing he walked through the wall and into his bedroom.
He walked to the cabinet to the left of the door and opened it up to find a bottle of spirits surrounded by a few glasses. He lifted the bottle and a couple of the glasses out of the cabinet and put them on the table before closing the cabinet door.
He poured the spirits into the glasses and filled them halfway when the door opened and in stepped Flavour.
“Is she still there?” Flavour asked closing the door.
“Yes don't worry. I told you no one but us knows about the passage ways in the castle,” He replied confident, handing her a glass of the spirits.
“Still I think you should move it! You never know, someone could stumble upon this passage way like you did when you first discovered it. Than they find her body right next to your bedroom! That wont go over well.”
“Fine,” Rintol agreed with her, “But where to hide it?”
“May I suggest Cherry woods? She always visited there. Everyone would assume she went there before “running away” and an animal ripped out her throat.
“And also can I suggest you fucking soundproof the door next time we discuss the plan?”
“Fine,” Rintol said annoyed. “Speaking of which,” he said raising his glass to his wife. “To the plan and all its workings in motion!” He toasted than drank the spirits in one gulp. “Now darling,” he started after pointing at the door and winking, “The plan is going very well don't you agree?”
“But darling how is everything gonna happen now with Razor going?” She asked. “Oh,” She started seeing his surprised look, “yeah I know about his little trip to visit the giants tomorrow, Stayla told me.
“He's gonna have a fun time when he meets them isn't he?” She asked smiling at her husband.
“Oh they know not to kill a king until I give my say so. No I need Razor back here cause without him we can't continue the discussions nor can we continue the plan and than that is ten years of waiting down the drain!”
“Well shall we go let them find this little shit?”
III. Taylor searches
Taylor exited his daughters bedroom after looking around for any clue of her disappearance. He found nothing except for the fact that despite “running away” all her clothes were still there.
He left the room pondering this and thought about the other places she would go during her breaks.
He decided where to go next as he had already searched the Astronomy tower, the Oval tower, the great hall, where he asked all of the kitchen workers if they had seen her and her bedroom and he found nothing of use anywhere,
He finally decided to try one more place than he would have to send some scouts out to visit the nearby towns to search for her. Starting on his way he sighed and prayed silently that he would find her.
Iv. Rintol attempts to find Tessa
Rintol carried the body silently through the castle walls praying that no one knew about the passage and decided on a midnight stroll as that would probably add more bodies to his list and people would start to get suspicious about all the disappearances. To his luck he ended up at the passage end without meeting anyone.
Before he left with the body, Taylor had stopped by to update him on the search which of course yielded no results and ended with everyone, except Taylor who was going to search Tessa's bedroom, going to bed. And now Rintol had hoped that, after giving up with the bedroom, Taylor decided to visit Cherry woods as that is where the body will be found and by Rintol as well.
He exited the passage and found himself outside the castle directly below the Astronomy tower and started on his way towards cherry woods.
As he made his way down he felt a tug on the back of his leg and turned around to find Blinter.
“Fucking mutt,” He said to the dog, “What do you want?”
Blinter looked at the corpse in Rintol's arms and at once he charged a jump and attempted a bite at Rintol's left arm. Rintol was too fast and moved out of the way.
“Fuck off you dumb mutt You're gonna ruin everything.
Blinter, not even thinking of quitting, attempted an attack again but again Rintol was too fast and after pulling his dagger out of his pants pocket he attacked.
Blinter fell down dead.
Good Rintol thought to himself. Two dead bodies to be “Found”
He picked up the dog and held him next to his master and continued on his way to Cherry woods.
V. Taylor finds Tessa
He left the castle still praying he would find Tessa in Cherry woods as he doubted if he would get any sleep tonight and he was fairly sure Marie was still awake and she wouldn't let him get any sleep regardless.
As he made his way towards the forest he looked at the field where, just yesterday, he and all of the people in the castle decided to sit down and watch The Group play a game of soccer during which, as tradition goes, his daughter's team won.
He continued on with a smile as he entered the forest the smile quickly changed as he saw Rintol, who was crying in agony, lying over Tessa's dead body, which, he saw, was lying next to Blinter's Corpse.
Vi. Taylor and Rintol talk
Taylor and Rintol left Tessa's bedroom where her body was currently lying on the bed and Marie was crying hysterically.
They decided to discuss the whole event in Taylor's office.
“Drink of whisky?” Taylor asked pulling a bottle of golden coloured liquid and four glasses out of the little cupboard that sat next to his desk.
“Yes please,” Rintol said as he sat down.
Taylor poured the liquid into all four glasses than handed Rintol one of them, leaving the other three in front of himself.
“Now,” Taylor said after downing two of the glasses, “Tell me what happened.” he knew it would kill to hear what happened to his little girl and enter acceptance but he felt the alcohol would help
“Well,” Started Rintol already happily drunk, “I came down after checking all the passageways through the castle than I just felt the urge to look at Cherry woods.
“As I made my way down I heard screaming and I came just in time to see a Strippler rip the throat out of Blinter.
“I ran in but I was too late as she was already dead and it looked like it had been hours.”
Taylor looked proudly at his friend grateful that he was calm while telling him what happened.
Rintol looked at his “friend” and thought about him under the guillotine.
