Chapter 5: The end of the beginning
Last night was the best time of my life. I have officially dating Brittney for three months now. Who is the most beautiful girl in the world. For once in my life I was the lucky guy. Steps from the hallway stopped by the front of my door.
“Hey Shaun, did you hear about Bryan?” Alex asked with a suspense in his face that could only be explained as something tragic has happened. Alex then rested his arm on the door.
“No, what happened to him?” I said with my hands becoming clammy from nervousness.
“He was hit last night by a drunk driver. He is paralyzed from the waist down. He will be in a wheelchair by next week. You should be able to see him at the hospital today at 4. He has surgery at 12 today.” Alex explained.
It was a bit of sad news because I was his good friend of his and he was an excellent wide receiver when we played backyard football. I was just glad he was ok.
“Hey Shaun where is your cross you usually wear across your neck?” Alan asked shuffling his hands in his pockets.
“I gave it to Brittney last night. She had a nightmare so I told her the cross would protect her from the nightmares. It fit perfectly on her. It use to prevent me from getting nightmares but lately it hasn’t been working for me.” I explained while putting my hand where my cross would be if I was wearing it. I began to rock back in forth in my computer chair.
“Come on man, give me the juicy details of what went down after you guys left the bar” Alan said and leaned in-word. Grinning ear to ear.
“Sorry Alex, I don’t kiss and tell,” I said as my face turned red a bit.
“Seems like you have done more than just kissing Brittney, Shaun. Come on man tell me!” he pleaded.
“Get out of here man.” I said as I threw the round stress ball at him and Alex laughed as he left.
I thought to myself that work should get my mind off of Bryan’s recent accident.
I began to look at the numbers again for Liverpool; strange. I thought to myself. Why was a massive amount of blood being sent to an organization by the name of “WLV”? Out of all my years working for the Red Cross I have never heard of the name “WLV”.
I stared into a picture of me and Alan at Pensacola Beach the same year we left on to work with Red Cross. It was also the same year his parents were killed in a tragic car accident. He was originally going to join them to Myrtle Beach but decided to go with me and a few high school buddies.
Back to the mystery of “WLV”. It seemed that all around the world that we were sending blood to organizations I’ve never heard of. I’ll go ask Mr. Hummel about the organizations. I got off my chair and started to head toward Mr. Hummel’s office.
The break room was right before you entered his office. There were an odd number of co-workers in the break room staring at the television that was hanging by ceiling in the top right corner.
“Hello my name is Heather Brockman with channel 7 news. Today the World Leading Vaccinations Company has announced that they have solved the issue of the bacterial disease that has been killing humans at a rapid rate. World Leading Vaccinations; otherwise known as WLV, has discovered the cause of the disease as well as how to fix the issue. The Bacteria pierces through the skin of the victim and drinks the fluid of the victim. They claim to have invented a device that once omitted around the house will kill all harmful bacteria. The government has given the company a grant to mass produce the item. The company at first, wanted to be allowed to enter every house hold and install the devices. The government has denied them of such rights. The company must now send letters to the household’s owner and have them sign a consent to allow the company to enter the household. The bacterial disease has claimed over 55 million lives and in some extreme cases, the head has been completely removed.”
It still didn’t make sense though. What about the other organizations? I grabbed the Styrofoam cup from the white table. Then poured hot water in the cup watching it fill to the top and grabbed the hot chocolate mix. I poured in the ingredients watching the black ingredients take over the clear clean water. Then stirred it up making hot coco. I turned around and entered Mr. Hummel’s office.
“Ah, Mr. Gray good to see you. What’s up?” Mr. Hummel asked.
“Mr. Hummel I was looking at the numbers again and it seems that we have been donating a large amount of blood to an organization called WLV. Which I believe is the name of World leading Vaccinations. It shows the amount shown here but was never recorded in numbers like it was excluded.” I said
“That is interesting… I’ll ask the board tomorrow about this ordeal. Thank you for your concern though.”
I then left his office and headed back toward mine.
