Hello everyone! I am back with more of my random drawings. But in this case, I thought that I should make a gallery instead of posting my drawings individually. I believe keeping them in the same place is better then otherwise. Lately my artist block has lifted and left me with the urge to draw. I have been influenced by realism mostly though because that is one form of art I wish to master. I find beauty in the human features.

Art is certainly my passion, and because of this I want to improve. That is why heavy and in depth critiques are wanted. There is no way in getting better without first figuring out what is wrong with it.

Lately I have been into drawing famous people, so if you have any suggestions into whom or what I should draw feel free to tell me. I have a lot of spare time, and I would love to complete some requests.

[ 01/26/10 ]

This is my first picture that I shall be posting in my gallery. It is of one of my absolute favourite actors Jim Sturgess. That is a link to a random picture of him. You might recognize him as George Boleyn in The Other Boleyn Girl or Jude in Across the Universe.

My scanner is horrible just to let you know, and because of that it sometimes doesn't pickup my shading right. Be conscientious that the scanner picked up the shading on the one side of his forehead, the side away from the source of light, but the cheek below the eye that is the side away from the source of light is not as darkly shaded. It did not pick up that section of the shading, though it is indeed a tad bit darker.

Critiques would be loved!~

Hey, Nito. Here to review, obviously.
So, I really liked this. It's a spectacular portrait, all I would say is maybe make the lines of his lips more distinct, it sort of just blends in like white. That's probably you're scanner though, but I don't know.
This is really good, though, Nito.
Keep it up.

Heya Incognito!

This is an amazing picture! How I wish I could draw like this. Anyroad, I suppose onto the review. Or what I can point out.

~The collar of his shirt needs to have a bit more shading. It may be your scanner, but it's really the only thing I noticed first that seemed abnormal. I thought there was something seriously wrong with his neck. Until I looked closer...

And sorry, but that's about it. I love the smug expression on his face. Or should I have said the smirk? Ah, don't matter.

Excellent job!

Hello Incognito!

Right, as for this wonderful, feature-stunning piece of realism!

- Proportions
Okay, as an artist myself, I do realise that these are very hard to perfect. I have to say you've done brilliantly with the facial features and the width of the upper body and neck. Perhaps rounding off the left shoulder, as there's still pleanty of room to do so, will improve the overall glance. The only other proportional abnormity for me is the right eye. I think this is easily fixed but it needs to be thinner to be more naturally similar to the left eye. Take a real close look and you might see what I'm getting at.

- Shading (Taking into account your scanner)
Okay, I can't nitpick this; not even with the image you have here with scanner issues. I adore the shirt and neck shading, I think this isn't too light nor too heavy and I adore the facial boost that comes with your light, smudgey shading. I also like how you've created a bristle effect above his upper lip, that kind of detail is what really makes a picture.
One thing I will mention about shading is in the hair. As much as it's well carried out, you need to make it less line-sketchy if you know what I mean. Try and give it more of that smudge effect you've given the face.

- Hair/eyebrows
Okay then (sorry if this is becoming depressing to read), I think the eyebrows are done well in the sense that it conveys an emotional stance for the portrait; in a sense they define the age of the character in the picture. So that's very well drawn!
For hair I think you've recreated a fashionable and admirable look. What I will say though is that it's slightly lacking in originality and this may be due to the extensive realism created by it. I think with hair you can be a little more free and create a sureal format of style and go wacky, perhaps overdetail something or go heavy on shading, you know? This is more of a suggestion than a nitpick though.

- Overall
-> Improvement: Experiment more! have variety and maybe elaborate on the figure aswell as neck and facial.
-> Feedback: A lot better than most of my portraits so I can't compliment you enough on how talented of an illustrater you are, I can merely suggest things to improve that you probably know better than I do. Just have a waddle about with different techniques.

- KEEP UP THE WORK!
Loved it,
Ben

Wow, nice work, you've got the shading correct, but maybe you could strengthen the lines so it does show up in the scanner... they are very faint here. plus, maybe try making his eyes a bit bigger since these eyes seem too small.

But i really liked this drawing, the hair is absolutely gorgeous and i cannot draw boys very well!!! The colar looks awesome, and maybe you could strengthen the pencil around his lips...

Overall, very good, keep drawing and i would love to see you draw Sam Worthington! ;) (that's my goal!!!)

Thank you all for your reviews, certainly. They were quite helpful and I appreciate them greatly. I have taken all your comments into consideration because you guys now your stuff. The one thing I want to say is that partially why the lines are so light is because when drawing realism, if you outline the lines too darkly then it will look almost animated and that is what I am trying to stray from.

I understand what you are saying about outlining his lips out a bit more also because in the actual picture it is quite light too, and I can shade it also.

I don't think I can express my gratitude for your reviews in just words. Especially yours Ben. You were certainly helpful and not dreary at all. It is those kind of reviews that I really need.

Thanks again guys~

Hello!

I don't really normally review Art but I really liked this. I agree with some that your shading was lost in places, but that was probably your scanner! Well Done!! I loveed it, it's certainly better than I can draw, people anyway :)

Well Done,
Keep Drawing

Incognito, I want to be you when I grow up.

This is marvelous. One of the best pieces of art I've seen on YWS in a long, long time. I really love the detail on his face -- it's so proportionate; I don't understand how you manage to get it right. And, his expression is wonderfully placed. It really is a wonderful drawing.

I do think that his neck needs more muscles, because it looks a bit blank, and perhaps a bit of light shading around the collar, and maybe his mouth could be darkened just a little so that it stands out from his surrounding skin. :D

Flower here for your reviewing needs haha. Ok, so there isn't much I can say that others havn't beat me to. So I will start with what I like about it.

I am working on the same type things in art and I know how difficult it is, so here we go.

First of all I just wanted to tell you I love the cheek lines. I have trouble with those. Moving on.

I think that the shadding should be a little bit darker all around, I know you are going for realism, but I think it would help.

I think that on the side of his cheek it is a little to sharp. Just a little curve would look better to me.

The lips need a little darker outline, I know you don't want it to dark but just a little wouldn't hurt.

Last of all I love how you drew the hair. I don't really see anythign wrong with it.

Anyhoo this is an amazing picture and I can't wait to see more of your work.

My reality comes to a close as I once again realize that you don't love me, and even if I love you with my everything you will never care.
