photography has always fascinated me. i've been photographing pseudo-seriously ever since i got my first slr (canon rebel xti) for my 15th birthday. before my canon, i was using a crappy fuji digital camera and have only a handful of shots i am still proud of (some are shown below).

*** i have recently entered a photography contest hosted by brickfish and could really use your support! all you have to do is follow this link and vote for my photograph. i really, really want to make it into the top 150 because then i have a shot at winning a $600 scholarship/prize! considering it's my junior year and i plan on applying to expensive colleges, i can use any scholarships i can get. ***

Awesome shots! I like the one with the moth in particular.

I love these, the last one is a little blurry, maybe that was the intention, but anyway they are wonderful!

Hey there, Julia!

Ah, you're intimidating, you know that? You're honestly really good at photography; I'm impressed. (And, I voted for you!) Let's get this rolling.






The composition in this photo is excellent, and the greyscale compliments; more often than not, people use greyscale on their photos and that just ruins them, but here, you still manage to capture the fun, childish spirit of the subject. Two thumbs up; definitely a candid.




I absolutely adore this shot! It's so happy-tone and playful and overall just amazing. The clarity and composition of it is perfect; wonderfully done.




While I like the clarity of this, I'm not sure I like the composition. The angle could work, but it's too off-balance to be readily appreciated, because both his chin and head are cut off.




Can you say awesome? Wonderful posture, quirky angle works wonders, and the cross process coloring is brilliant. Wonderful composition and clarity.


I don't think the greyscale works for this one. I like your composition and focus, but the grey shadows the eyes too much, and the pole (?) in the background's a bit distracting.





This one is absolutely lovely! It looks happy, and carefree -- the... object on the right is a bit bright, and my attention's pulled to that, so I think it'd be a little better if it were darkened.


This is terribly gorgeous. I love the focus, though I'd probably photoshop and blur the top flower about 2% more so that it's not detracting attention from the butterfly. What lens did you use for this? It's amazing.


How cuuuute! I love his expression! Definitely a candid keeper -- I'd recommend blurring the background just a little, because the green pole-things in the back are extremely interesting, and I keep getting lost in them.




Last, but not least! This one is cool, but the focus... it's like, too soft, and I can't find a point of interest, so it's not my favorite.

How long have you been photographing? You're really good -- I say you should keep it up, and I would love to see more of your work soon.

third picture ~ yeah this was taken a couple of years ago more for fun than for art (; i totally agree with you though; i always knew there was something off with the picture but could never put my finger on it... it's one of my favorites though because he's such a sweet kid and i loved his expression/eyes <3

fifth picture ~ yeah i'd have to agree with you again. this definately isn't one of my favorite pictures - and i didnt' like the fact that his paws were cut off - but his fur in the original version has incredible definition. i just decided to throw it in here because the gallery was looking a bit empty x) plus he's my baby and he looks so calm and regal here and he never is usually haha.

seventh picture ~ thank you! i just used the standard 18-55 mm lens for this (;

ninth picture ~ yeah this picture never proves to be so popular haha i don't blame anyone since it's definately not remarkable, but it's one of my favorite pictures for some reason! it was one of my first pictures i took with my canon and i guess i just fell in love with how the texture of the shell came out.

i've only been 'photographing' since like 2008. i say that in quotes because, while i do try to take meaningful pictures, i don't really take the time to study the ART of photography - if you know what i mean.. i'm sort of self-taught minus the teaching part i guess haha.

thanks so much for the comments/reviews! i thought your focus on the blurring and backgrounds was different and helpful so i appreciate the advice (: i'll definately try posting up new pictures soon!

I adore your angles that you've chosen, they're just the right focus on the majority and I think that most of them are flawless in quality. I think Juni's covered the nitpicks I had.

I have to say, the picture with the dog in the orange scenery is my favourite. It's absolutely beautiful. From this I'd suggest creating a selection of montages from your photography and slapping them into some A3 or A2 Sketchbook. This can really increase your chances of being accepted at colleges as they love to see portfolios of work.

do you mean if i'm applying to a major art school? i actually don't want to major in photography so i probably won't be applying to any of those art colleges haha. i want to make prints of my favorites pictures and hang them up in my room though lol i think that's the only montage i'll ever do x)

Okay, as a photographer myself I'm pretty harsh when critiquing. However, most of these are very good.
You seem very good for your age, a real talent of yours perhaps. I'd work on the composition (a few of these you cut the kids head and chin off. No, no!). The last picture of the shell is poorly focused, sort of blurry.
Anyhoo, nice job. I hope you keep sharing, and I'm sure you'll win some competitions with these.

Yeah, like I said above, I never really focused on composition; I normally just snap away when it comes to people for more candid, 'real' shots if you know what I mean haha. But, I am trying to take better composed shots (;

Yes, I know what you mean. Candid shots are good if thats what you're into, however, portraiture is usually more composed and...how shall I say...more positioned, I suppose? Focused on the picture? While candid can show what the person is really about, like their daily life or streets shots or just quick snap-a-ways. Any photo is good; and editing can somtimes save even the not-so-greatest of photos.
