Golden Key
Chapter 3
Ley Line
I sat in the front of the bus rubbing my arms together nervously; I turned slightly to stare behind me. Tina sat on the edge of the seat blinking at me. I turned away from her, I felt so guilty. I closed my eyes tightly gulping down the excess saliva which swished around my mouth. My teeth chattered nervously as I opened my eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Tina asked staring at me through thick eyelashes.
“Nothing” I said innocently turning to stare at her. I could feel hard metal in my back pocket, it cut into my skin whenever I moved. I forced a smile at Tina before turning towards the front; the bus driver was changing the channel on the radio smirking loudly whenever he hit a dead station.
“It doesn’t look like nothing. You look like you killed someone and are secretly turning insane”
I turned towards her smiling face, poking out my tongue I shook my head “Thank you, I just love to know that I look like I am secretly going nuts”
“No problem” she looked up above of my head, her eyes widen a smile spreading across her pale freckle flicked skin.
“What?” I asked, she pointed past me. Turning in my seat I groaned at the sharp pain, I blinked. Tyson and Thomas both were strolling down the aisle, Tyson walked past me staring at the back. Thomas, though stared at me from the corner of his eye. Blinking he looked back up towards the back as he noticed that I staring back into his sea blue eyes.
“Ty and Tommy we saved a seat for you” Laurel and Melanie said in unison. I turned to look back at Tina “What?” I asked again.
“Didn’t you see the muscles in their arms” her eyes gleamed, I felt anger begin to pile in my throat.
“Yeah but who cares, they’re nothing special. Those two idiot’s think they’re so good that they can strut around making any girl flip. It will never work on me ever, I hate those two and I wish they’d both go die in a hole” an image of the two of them falling into a deep hole made me smirk. I hated them both so much I was on the verge of tears.
‘And I am going to turn them in too!’ I thought to myself happily.
“That’s mean Saffron” Tina muttered turning to stare out the window, a small smile over her face. I sighed, getting up out of my seat I stared at the over head compartment. We hadn’t yet gone to our camping area where we would spend the next couple of nights, so that meant all our luggage was practically swimming around our feet.
The busses engine flickered to life, the sound of its rumbling made me sit back down. Frowning I stared at Mr. Black from the corner of my eyes. He was biting into his lip writing briskly into a yellow pad book he brang everywhere with me.
“Mr. Black?” I whispered staring wide eyed at him, he lifted his head worry covered it deeply engraving small lines above his eye brows.
“Yes” he answered coldly looking back down at his pad, nibbling on the top of his pencil.
“Can I get my book?”
“Where is it?”
“In my bag” he stared down the aisle his usually friendly eye’s had turned steely his face which was usually opened was closed making it hard for me to read the emotion’s he was experiencing
“What ever” I got to my feet, clasping on to the chair’s I pushed myself down the aisle ignoring people staring at me in confusion. I went onto the ball’s of my feet looking through the many bags piled into the overhead compartment. Sighing I pulled myself up, my muscles in my arms flexed. Positioning my feet on the head of the dark blue seats, I barred my teeth keeping myself positioned so I wouldn’t fall to the floor.
I saw my bag way at the bag, fumbling through it my hands sealed around the thinnest book in the bag. Pulling it out I stared at the cover; The Wizard of Rondo. Smiling I stared down at the floor estimating a way to fall without hurting my already fragile knees.
“Get down from there?!” I heard the bus driver screeched, I felt my eyes widen as the brakes were screeched down on. The bus lurched forward violently with everyone on it screaming. Crying out I was pushed off of the top of the seat’s falling towards the floor I struck it on my side. The burning of my flesh rubbing against carpet made me scream.
“Saffron!” I stared up at Tina, she blinked at me shocked her mouth open wide. My book went skidding out of my hands towards the back of the room.
“Are you insane, Mr. Black if you cannot take care of these children I don’t think I want to drive for you anymore” the bus driver snapped.
“Marty please calm down, I don’t know what got into she’s usually a good student. Saffron what in your right mind gave you the idea to climb onto the seat’s?” I slowly got to my feet rubbing the top of my head. “Look Marty can you just drive us to the caravan park it’s been a long day” Mr. Black sighed seeing I wasn’t going to answer.
The engine roared to life, I began to walk towards the front sitting behind Tina. I collapsed onto my chair curling into a tight ball.
………………………………………………………………………..
I felt someone shaking me “Saffron wake up” I heard a voice say closely to my ear, I opened my eyes groaning.
“Where are we?” I asked seeing Tina’s concerned face through the small slit of my eyes.
“Camp” she muttered, I sat up suddenly combing my fingers through my hair. Grabbing at my hair tie that lay on the floor I pulled my hair up into a high bun tying it messily.
“I set up our tent,” She began grinning nervously “I am sorry but we are sharing with Laurel…”
“She’s okay I guess”
“And Melanie”
I fell back onto my chair groaning “I’m sleeping in here tonight good luck” I closed my eyes trying to get to my dreams.
“Oh no you don’t if I have to than you do to” she grabbed at my ear yanking it upwards; I screamed jumping to my feet. She began to pull me off the bus laughing at my attempt to break out of her hold. I looked up into the night sky; stars sprouted through it lighting the area. I could see a faint glow of a fire the sound of voices filled my ears as I was pulled towards a shady area. Trees hang low over a group of student’s cackling loudly, tent’s were scattered around the camp making it look messy and disorganized.
“Where’s ours?” I asked plucking her fingers off of the lobe of my ear . I began to rub at my ear pouting my lips. She laughed her voice screeching into the night air “Over there” she pointed towards the end, I frowned.
“But that is at the end” I sighed letting my hands dangle at my sides.
“I didn’t choose where the tent’s were placed Mr. Black did” I frowned scratching at the side of my head. Shrugging I walked towards my tent my heart pounding. I felt a heat wave wash over me covering the coolness of the night air. Wiping the top of my forehead I began to pant why was it becoming so hot!
“Is it just me or are you boiling hot too?” I asked fanning myself with the end of my hair; Tina shook her head staring at a group of people.
“I think I am going to go for a shower?” I panted
“At this time” she hissed in disbelief, I nodded ignoring her as she tried to keep me back. I began to walk towards the showers practically running. Opening the meshed door I threw it back running through the small hall way lined with cheap looking toilets and showers, at the end lay the sinks lined up underneath a long mirror tacked to a pale green wall.
“Tyson might have a thing for me” I heard Melanie hiss, I stopped to listen.
“You really think?” Laurel said her voice filled with awe. Pushing myself into a cubicle I slid the door closed listening intently.
“He’s always looking at me, like Thomas does to you” I pressed my hands to my mouth trying not to laugh.
“Tommy looks at me?” Laurel muttered uncertainly
“Yeah practically drooling”
A snigger escaped my lips, biting into my cheek I felt the pain begin to wash over me.
“Really?” Laurel’s voice thick with hope.
“You know if we keep looking hot we can hook them hopefully” I heard a snap “Do you wanna use my facial mask”
“No thanks I have applied one already”
“Really I can’t see it”
“Oh it’s a light one”
“Really” I could see their feet pass my cubicle, softly tapping through the deserted bathroom.
“So he likes me” Laurel said hopefully
“I’m sure as hell that Tyson has a thing for me and Tommy has one for you” I heard the door snap shut and their voices dying as they walked into the distance. I let my hands fall as laugh’s escaped my lips.
“That is funny!” I stopped suddenly as I hear someone say behind me, I turned slowly fear coiling around my heart. I felt my eyes widen as I saw Thomas and Tyson standing together on the toilet crouched in a cat like position. I screamed pushing myself out of the cubicle I stumbled hitting the tiled floor with my chin pain running up my jaw.
“What the hell are you doing in here you pervert’s!” I screamed
“What do you think?” Tyson muttered slowly getting off the toilet seat
“Trying to find you” Thomas said smiling friendly.
“Why are you trying to find me?” I spat getting to my feet my hands shaking in rage.
“You have something that belongs to us” Tyson snarled
“You do not own this” I pulled the hard metal thing out of my pocket “You stole it” I looked down at it, a golden chain fell through my finger’s, hanging from it lay a golden key. I stared down at it blinking.
“We did no steal it, just borrowed it for a life time” Tyson snapped he began to walk towards me his hand’s in his pockets.
“Tyson don’t” Thomas said staring innocently at me. Tyson’s hand stretched towards me grabbing on to my shoulders he pushed me into the wall his face coming up close to mine.
“You’re going to give me that key and you’re going to keep silent about all of this”
“Tyson don’t!” Thomas suddenly jumped from the seat, he ran towards Tyson grabbing on to his hand, Thomas began to stare at Tyson. Tyson hung his head his ash colour hair hid with eyes.
“Thomas we have too”
“No please don’t do it, she didn’t choose this”
“What are you going to do to me!” I shouted, I began to squirm my heart jumping.
“Stop fighting!” Tyson said through gritted teeth, I didn’t stop though I began to kick out. I struck his shin. Cursing I rocketed out of his hold ducking under Thomas’s flaying hands. I swirled around to look at holding the key, I began to shake my head.
“I hope you like Juvie” I turned to run fear coiling around my lung;, Thomas was suddenly in front of me staring at me with his deep sea blue eyes. He shook his head
“No” He pressed his thumb to my forehead “I’ll do it this time Tyson it won’t hurt as much”
“No Tommy it will hurt you”
“I doesn’t matter” he closed his lip’s white light began to form around his thumb. I tried to move but I was captivated, all I could do was blink. I felt tears begin to fall down my cheeks. Thomas began to chant something in a different language the word’s filled my head.
“I’m sorry” he muttered, I felt tear fall on to my hand, another on my arm. I closed my eyes; I began to feel light headed. Another tear fell onto my palm another on the tip of my fingers. Stars began to appear in my vision inviting me into them. I was about to step forward when I felt another tear run down my nose. I didn’t feel it land on my arms like the rest had.
I felt another heat wave begin to wash over me sweat began to run down my back. I felt my cheek’s flush as the heat began to get unbearable. I heard Tyson scream behind me, I opened my eyes a crack. I saw Tyson rocket towards Thomas. Thomas was wailing, his face went a deathly white.
“Tommy!” Tyson screamed, Thomas’s eyes opened as he cried out. His eyes had changed from the normal sea blue into a deep violet a pattern of white lines lay in the middle. I looked down at my finger’s they were beginning to burn. The key it had lit up, the white shining out of it was painful. Tyson covered his eyes with his hand’s screaming out Thomas’s name. I saw Thomas grab at his eye’s blood beginning to drip from them.
“Stop this... Saffron” Tyson screamed, I felt my hands tighten around the key pushing it down towards the floor I felt my mouth drop.
“Saffron!” Tyson yelled again, he fell to his knees blocking his eyes from the intense light. I felt a cold hand touch my own, I stared to see Thomas. His blood began to drip down my hands falling towards the ground. I saw one of his eyes, I felt my own widen.
“I can’t stop it!” I screamed
“I know you can” I felt my eyes begin to sag, blackness coming around me. White light began to dance around my body, a tendril of light threw itself towards a window breaking through the thin glass. The lights above our head’s began to flicker on and off before the glass smashed small shards raining down on me. I screamed, I tried to throw the key but my fingers wouldn’t release.
“Help me!” I screamed, the light growing even stronger. I grabbed at my eyes covering them, I feel the key sucking at me stealing my strength. I screeched as my heart faltered pain running through my body. Blood began to drip from my mouth as I coughed gagging at the pain.
“God no!” I hear someone yell. I looked up to see Tyson staring behind me, I turned my head my heart hammering. A golden light shone invitingly, I felt my heart tingle as I saw it.
“She opened up a ley line” Tyson screeched “Tommy she opened a ley line a human a mundane!” Thomas screamed in response more of his blood dropping towards the floor. I got shakily towards my feet, stumbling forward I held out my hand towards the warm soothing gold.
“No! Don’t go towards it…” Tyson ran towards me, grabbing at my waist he tried to pull me back. I fought against him the key heating up. Fire roared to life around me, Tyson jumped backwards staring at me in horror. I held up my hand towards him, the fire followed rushing towards Tyson. He screamed pushing himself towards Thomas he jumped the fire missing the two of them by an inch. I turned back towards the golden light. Stepping forward both my hands stretched out in front of me.
“No…Saffron” Thomas moaned stretching his hand out towards me “Tyson…get…her!” he screamed. “No Thomas we have to get out of here” he retorted “She hurt you”
“Tyson help her” Thomas’s eyes rolled back into his head, Tyson began to shake him screaming out his name. He turned towards me, anger masking his face. Screaming he held on to Thomas running towards me. I felt a strong hand grab at my shoulder, as my hands moved through the light the feeling of warmth filled me. The pain of my insides disappearing.
“Saffron no” he groaned as he tried to pull me back, I let one of my feet go through. “No!” I pulled against him more of my body going through. As my head passed through, darkness began to entomb around me as I began to fall my whole body slipping through.
