Personality: Is very smart, athletic and pretty. Is not a loner but is not popular, she just fits in. Gets invited to parties and such but does not attend. She was missing more school and seems to be hiding a big secret before the murder.

(:) Let's start! I'm not very good at starting a story, but here I go!)

Sam stood outside one of the school buildings, leaning against the painted white brick wall. She reached into her pant pocket for her cigarettes. She wasn't a super heavy chain-smoker, though she would smoke every now and then. Opening her cigarette case, she realized it was empty. Cursing under her breath, she looked around, seeing a couple guys smoking. Walking up to them, she spoke.

"Have any spare cigarettes?"

James

Olivia had put up a fight that morning. "I don't want to go to school!" she had yelled, her tiny voice filling up the apartment. "You're not my dad, you can't make me go!"

James had tried not to let those few angry words sting. She was only twelve. She didn't understand. "If I was dad, you would already be sporting a bloodied lip and you know that. Be greatful I got you out of that hell-hole."

"I know," she muttered. James could tell that she felt bad for saying anything now. A devious smile came to her lips. "How about this," she said. "I'll go to school if you go."

Even after a few more minutes of arguments, James hadn't been able to sway her. Thus, he found himself at school that day. Or at least, on school property.

Finding his old gang was easy. They still kept up the old haunts. The first place he checked was the alley behind one of the school buildings, and that was where he found them.

"Big Jim is back to school?" one of them asked, wide-eyed. "What happend to the 'final parting words with this damn place' you shouted behind you last month when you stormed out of history class?"

James punched him in the shoulder. He had never liked this one. Kevin was his name, and he was one of the most annoying kid in the entire school. "Shut up and give me your lighter," James demanded.

Kevin handed over his lighter and James lit up a cigarette he fished out of his pocket. He leaned back against the wall and breathed out a puff of smoke.

"Have any spare cigarettes?" a female voice asked. James looked down the alley to see a vaugely familiar girl walking towards him. They had probably shared a class together somewhere along the line.

"What have you got in return?" James asked.

She stopped a few feet away and raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"You can't expect an addict, especially a male addict, to give up something so important to him for free now can you?" he asked, a sly smile on his face. Calling himself an addict was pushing it a little far. Smoking was never something he did much. In fact, he hadn't smoked for a month. Something about this place, this damn school, made him do it. He wanted to test this girl, see how badly she wanted it, see what kind of person she was. "So, whatcha got?"

Sam paused for a moment, staring at him as she thought.

There’s a small store not far from here. I could probably make it before classes start again

She figured, speaking up. “I suppose I’ll buy my own, or go to someone else.” She said, turning away. But before she went too far, she turned back, reaching into her pocket and tossing a lighter at James.

“It appears you need one.” She called.

James

He watched the girl walk away, her lighter in his hand. She held her ground to him. He liked that.

"Man," Kevin said grabbing his own lighter back from James' other hand. "She's worthless. She didn't even offer anything up. Tough luck, bud."

James stuck his lit cigarette to Kevin's chest without taking his eyes off the girl. Kevin yelped and knocked it away. "Hey!"

James looked back at Kevin for hopefully the last time. "You're an idiot," he said. Parting words were always so sweet.

He trotted down the alley to catch the girl. He wanted to know more about her.

Sam grinned, faintly hearing the guys in the ally behind her as she walked away. She could see the small store in the distance, on the other side of a fence that surrounded the school. Sam grabbed onto the fence, ready to climb it when approaching footsteps made her stop and turn around. Spotting the guy from the ally, James, she stood there and waited for him to catch up.

question: so what's the idea to start the story??

(Foxfire, I think the original idea was to write part of our character's being killed, and then start from the beginning and somehow have them leave a bunch of hints behind on why they died. Though kinda forgot about the murder start.)

perhaps we'll just go through the first whole day, get killed, then start back from the beginning? That way we have a general skeleton of the day to follow.
