Hello. My name is Allison and I'm currently writing a Disney Novel. It involves characters from the Disney World, though the main character is not a Disney Character. It's basically about a fifteen year old girl who gets sucked into a world where the Disney characters of the past, present, and future live in harmony. She has to fight Disney Villians to save her Aunt, who is being held as their prisoner and find a way to get back home.
There is much more to my story than that, but that is a BRIEF overview of it.
I seem to find that many people on this website tend to say that using previously used characters in your own novel is not being original enough, particularly when people write about a Disney character. I'm afraid I don't understand how that is not original- even though they are previously used characters, using them in your own way and shedding new light on them, is not being unoriginal in my opinion.
It makes me think of a very famous author, Gregory Maguire. He has written many great novels, my favorites are the three "Wicked Years" novels, and "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister". The Wicked Years are three novels following the lives of three characters from the Wizard of Oz: The Wicked Witch of the West, her son, and the Cowardly Lion. while I will admit the second character, her son, was not mentioned in the Wizard of Oz, it deals with those characters and that world. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is about Cinderella and her stepsisters, and how they came to be.
All of those books are original, and in my opinion absolutely brilliant, and yet they deal with characters that have been previously used. Gregory Maguire says using the Wicked Witch of the West was a device to entice his readers, with previously known characters.
I ask you guys if you think that Disney novels can be good novels,or if they just aren't good enough. I've gotten good responses to my prologue, without people knowing that it was a Disney themed novel.
I'm afraid that my novel will not be changed, and I will continue to work on my Disney piece but, I would still love your opinions. Can Disney novels, be good novels? Can previously used characters be original when used in a different context? And can showing a new area of a previously used world be a good novel?
Of course I do not believe there is one answer to this. It is all opinion. But please, do respond. I'd love to hear what you think!
