Well, it's supposedly an amazing movie with great graphics and a good story line. Anyone seen it yet? How was it? I'm hopefully going with some friends after the holidays, and I cannot wait!!

I saw it in 3D on Friday. It's incredible - really. The storyline, while on the surface a little cliché, is pulled off in such a fantastic way. The characters are believable, it builds thoroughly and ends with one pretty brilliant climax.

Or something. Go see it. xD

Everyone's talking about how cliche the storyline is (not you, Blink, the critics ), but I don't think it's really possible anymore to come up with a storyline that original! All the bases for a plot have been taken over, and the only thing you can really change, short of something completely drastic, are the details. I don't mind that it's cliched; the movie is absolutely brilliant. I loved it. And the weirdest part of it all is...

I haven't even seen it yet! Oh, but I will! I will indeed... You should too, Hawkster. *nods*

Haha that's the plan, Knightley! I have yet to hear something bad about it, so I'm very excited!

I saw it today and it's freaking awesome. I get the point in the cliche story- I don't think so. Yes, it's a typical romance story but it's so worked on and has such a fantastic message. I loved it. James Cameron totally has it. The film lasted for three hours but the flew away in minutes- I couldn't get bored! In terms of graphics and overall environment, the final work it's outstanding. You can notice a few parts that are not that great but the fight scene totally blown me off. So worth watching!

I saw the film, and I have to disagree with all of the above. The effects were good, very pretty and lovely, etc. etc. but I do not fawn over the outer-niceness. I want to talk about the substance.
I was appalled. Honestly, this took five years, on a budget of 300 million, and yet, the writing felt as if it consisted of a team of four. What were they thinking with 'Unobtainium'? It felt like for the rest of it, it was a thinly disguised version of a Pochahontas story, except the Native Americans were dyed blue.
After all this 'nature cycle' and 'Eywa, Eywa, etc. etc.' I couldn't help but side with the humans. It's that it's too long without a subplot. Lord of the Rings was the same length, but what with the fact that there were a bunch of subplots, it pulled it off. Imagine LOTR with just Frodo and Sam. No matter how good those scenes were, dragging it out makes you want to beat the main character's head repeatedly with a rock.
Anyway, it's so one-sided. All the Na'vi are good and brilliant and sooooo wise, etc. etc., while the humans, apart from the few tree-huggy ones, are all evil. Stock character evil, in fact. I don't see a scene in which all the people who were on the team are sacked, their children starve, and the corporate, Parker, must find a new job sweeping up sick in Aisle Seven. Seriously, would the corporation bent on getting Unobtainium (*snort*) really give up? Or would they just come back and nuke 'em? What the heck?
On the other hand, I loved the scientists, played by Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore. I think that if it were more focused on the scientific mission, and these suits are bent on pulling the plug of their mission, so they must fight back, it might have been good.
Altogether, I was disappointed. Oh, and a little bird tells me I may have released some spoilers. Ooh blimey, as if it weren't obvious.

The special effects is the only reason you need to watch it.See it in 3d and don't give much about the storyline.

I was surprised at how good this was, actually. James Cameron is quite a good director. As for the storyline, well, I could see the whole Pocahontas thing from a mile away. That didn't keep it from being an entertaining film though, and it is well worth seeing in 3D at the theather.

I thought it was good considering how low my expectations were. I expected it to be the world's worst film because of all the hoopla made about it but I loved it. Either that or I'm a Sigourney Weaver suck-up.

Also Ranger Hawk, I like your avatar. I love the Alien films.

I think we can all agree, regardless, Aliens was Cameron's finest work to date...

I loved the graphics of AVATAR. It was visually stunning.

However, it was too predictable. There was never a time in the movie when I didn't know what was going to happen.

I've heard great things about this movie and so I decided to go see it after school sometime this week. One thing I heard about it was that it has such good graphics it is to the 21st century what star wars was to the 1970's. Im unsure if it really is that good, but from what I've read here it must be at least worth a watch no matter what.

I recently saw Avatar in 3D with a friend. The graphics were simply breathtaking-- truly spectacular.

The storyline? It is basically a retelling of the Europeans (Spanish/English mostly) when they first started going to this new world, America. Add more technology to the Europeans and there you go. Also add some of early US history and what we did to the Indians. Annnnnnd that is your story line!

That is not to say that the story line is trite or ill-thought out. On the contrary actually. The story line was good-- the movie was so poignant that by the end I was rooting for the death of the humans. Very moving movie. I would definitely be willing to see it again...and again.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it since there have been so many good things said about it! I still have yet to see it (waiting for one of my friends to get back from a trip), but I've heard from my partner in French class that 3D really only adds depth to the movie, and that it's just fine to see it in 2D. Personally, I'm not a fan of 3D, since the glasses never stick on my face and when I take them off the movie hurts my eyes. Any opinions on whether Avatar needs to be seen in 3D or not?

Well, I've seen it twice so far in 2D (That's mostly cause its impossible to watch in it 3D here) but judging from what I heard from those who did watch it in 3D I'd say that you should definitely watch it in 3D. Trust me, its a great movie with great effects, great acting, great surrounding and pretty much great everything else.

But I have to agree with both Knightley and Light Devil though. Personally it's very rare for me to watch a movie and not know whats going to happen next. We, being writers, rarely fail to guess plot twists and story endings before they happen when watching movies and reading books. So who cares if the Avatar plot is a cliche anyway? Most other movies have no original plots either. One thing most of us will agree is that the movie was and is a great movie. Personally it's been so long since I've actually felt depressed after watching a movie. Avatar really made me want to live as the Na'vi live - an Adrenaline filled carefree life filled with life and color that never fades. My opinion is certainly biased towards Avatar as it will be Number 1 in my list for a long time.
