Chapter V - Allied
Yet again Cela's mouth fell agape. Bryn had more secrets about her than Cela had realized.
"Is that how he knows?" Cela said in awe.
"Yes," Bryn sighed guiltily, as she began pacing back and forth, "I'm not happy to say that I told him of us when I first found him, cold and hungry, wandering these very woods. 'Come,' I told him, 'Aradel will help you.' He looked at me quizzically before replying.
"'What is Aradel?' And it was so that I told him about us. Later he turned Aradel into the enemy, and told me never to speak of it. Shortly after he killed your Mother, and still he expected me to stand aside.
"I hid, unable to accept the unbearable pain of the monster that I had created. Then he found Xavier, and saw that he had similar plans.
"I know what it is that Xavier has to do to take my place in Terrin's world. He has to turn Terrin." Bryn finished, as she quit pacing and sat down on a rock.
Cela was amazed. This was not what she had been expecting. A new Ally, one from Aradel, who was even a vampire. And not only that, but Terrin wanted to be turned, he wanted to be one of them! She had one question for Bryn.
"Bryn," She said, her breathing almost back to normal, "How did you join Aradel? Last I knew we were a ressictance against the vampires taking over the world."
"Ah Cela, but I see as you do. Earth is the humans world, we had no right to take it, and we have even less right to force you to accept us as leaders while behind closed doors we kill you off. If vampires ruled the earth the human race would fall off into extinction, and in turn, so would we." She said airily. "Now if you have any needs to take care of, do so, for I would like to continue running as soon as possible, the farther away we are from Xavier and Terrin, the better."
"Why?" Cela questioned, and Bryn gave her a quizzical look. "Well, I mean, I know they are trying to kill us, but it can't be worse than jumping off a bridge, can it?"
"Cela," Bryn began, "I believe I am right in assuming that you have never met a new vampire." Cela nodded, "Newly created vampires spend the first week of their lives in a pain that is so unbearable that they feel like they are roasting in the very pits of hell. That they are freezing in a place colder than the arctic. In that moment they are damned to a haunted half-life, they may be immortal, but they are not perfect. They are not able to live life without being thought of as monsters. They aren't pure.
"And after that first week of pain, it suddenly vanishes. And you find your body surging with unimaginable power. You contain the knowledge of the ages, but still every once in a while your body is shocked with a spasmodic, unbridled, unbearable attack of pain. The attacks leave you stronger than before, and soon you are to the height of your power.
"After another week passes, you are so weak you are physically unable to pick your head off the ground to stare at the damned soul that is your life. And the time that stage takes to pass, we can't tell as it varies from vampire to vampire.
"Once that is true your body is done changing, you are fitter, faster, stronger, and more intelligent than any human. You gain a single ability that you can use to your advantage at any given time. Mine is control, you saw how I made Salenca obey my will. But she already knew of me, and my ability, and knew it was best not to fight. But I promise you that I did not know that Sal got out. And what you saw me do, that is only a portion of this power.
"Xavier, for instance, has the power of Unimaginable strength, he stayed at the height of his power. However every ability has shortcomings. Xavier, if you noticed, is only able to concentrate on one thing at a time. My own shortcoming is that I am not as menacing as the rest.
"But I fear what Terrin would be like. At the height of his power who knows what evil he could relish onto the world. Our only chance is to find him when he is weak, we have two weeks." Bryn glanced at Cela with worry in her eyes.
Cela couldn't say anything. With this new fear in her mind. She took care of her needs, and Bryn let her hang upon her back once more, looking like a strange clinging spider monkey more than a sixteen year old human.
