A single flame lit up the room, the overused candle barely the height of a mouse. Everywhere there were parchments and scrolls; decrees, battle strategies, even a few letters from the general’s wife. Swords, crossbows, broken memorabilia of ferocious battles. Our King Justin was bedridden, and the Malums, evil creatures with minds set on the demise of human beings, had attempted to rise up only a month before. The King appointed a General, Sir Matthew Delecrum, to go and put the monsters in their place. The general fingered the fangs that hung on twine around his neck. He had plucked on of the horrible teeth from each of Malum he had personally killed.

The general was dictating to the scribe, who wrote with perfect penmanship.

“…Such a Victory! We Forced the strange Creatures to defeat, reducing their Numbers to such that they have no Hope of Survival. We shall set them adrift, all of them, immediately. Soon the wretched Race shall die, and thou may truly proceed to bring your Glorious Rule to all. O King, how we praise Thee for bringing our People to this Success! The army shall return by the next month…”

For the next thousand years the Malums would be kept in the Wastes, a place made up of rock, sand, hills and death. Hundreds of corpses, bones, and rotting carcasses litter the hundred-mile area. Plants grow with struggle. All the animals are nocturnal; nothing but Malums can survive the heat of day. The night is freezing.

But what looks like victory for us may just as well be failure.

.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~. ~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.~*~.

It’s December 1st, 2009. The Malums, long forgotten by the general public, now only a government secret like Area 51, have advanced their technology far beyond what we imagined could exist so soon. The Wastes are still here, and still the only existing reservation for Malums. Soon they will make their presence known to all of mankind. The Wastes is the name of an island in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, one hundred square miles and completely hidden.

A few dozen humans have volunteered (with pay) to go down to the Wastes as a kind of inter-culture thing. The idea is to let humans know more about the Malums, how they aren’t a destructive race and just want to be able to live. It’s also to let the humans know just how bad off they have it. All during this, the Assembly, their congress, is working on their plan.

They will have their revenge.

Information on Malums:

Spoiler
The Malums aren’t a horrible species. They never wanted to do anyone harm. We were terrified of their intelligence, their ability to understand anything, and their incredible memory. Malums evolved alongside Humans, with Humans getting the brawn and Malums the brains. That’s how we nearly wiped them out. We were more numerous and physically stronger.

Compared to us, they are absolute geniuses. They understand everything, given enough information. Our tricky puzzles and riddles that no one but the inventor can figure out would be a first-grade pop quiz for them.

Also, compared to us, they are total wimps. They can barely lift their own -- very light -- weight. They can’t defend themselves in one on one combat. They’re fast, sure, but not strong enough to do anything. All of their defenses rely on their technology. Think of them like really weak elves from LoTR, that aren’t immortal and don’t have pointy ears. Their numbers are still small, with maybe ten thousand living in the Wastes al together.

Another notable point is that they have fangs. Not vampire fangs (and they do NOT drink blood, it’s a total taboo for them), snake fangs. They have cobra fangs that fold back into their mouths when they aren’t going to strike. Lke I said before, they are fast. They can’t fight, but they can hunt, which they have to in order to eat. They have venom glands by their nasal cavities. The fangs are two and a half inches long full size.

Their native language is totally made up not very pretty and not well known. It’s “backwards” like English, with the subject first. If you want to use it, it has sounds like “ai” “oi” “ka” “loi” “sai” and “sou” a lot. (this part was made up when I was making up their English accent, which ended up like “Ai cahn spaeck Aenglis”) The language in itself is taught for occupations like government official, businessman, etc. Some learn it through their parents or guardians teaching it to them as a second language. Some never learn it. They usually speak English these days, but it’s still with the dialect.

Why do they speak English? Twenty thousand soldiers from the United States, because the Wastes are closest to the US, guard the entrances to their underground tunnel system. They make sure no one tries anything, day and night. Of course, the Malums got sick and tired of not understanding them, so they learned (quickly).

They live in underground tunnels. See the cave in the picture? That’s an entrance. They use crystals for everything, which I will grow on later. Bright, glowing crystals light up the entire area. The walls are either made of rock or were created with metal. Air vents are in every room and every tunnel. In the tunnels they cook, sleep, etc. It’s where we live.

The crystals are their natural energy. Each crystal starts out as one of the many, many clear quartz that they have down there. Chemicals are what give them their colors. They have to be activated once a week with certain chemicals, and they never die out or whither away. This is the discovery that Malums try most to keep hidden from humans. There are four types of crystals:
Caltai: These are the “electricity”. They power everything. All the locks, database systems, machines, all of the things like that are powered by these yellow crystals.
Loi: These are the sources of heat. They keep the rooms warm at night and are used in cooking. Can reach temperatures of 150o Fahrenheit, so are concealed under insulators that can be opened up at night or closed during the hot day. These are a light purple.
Routhai: These are the cooling crystals. They feel like dry ice to the touch. They have to be changed with Loi day and night, cooling off the temperatures of the day. They are pitch black, like obsidian.
Kaithan: These are the light sources. They are so bright when activated that they are put under very thick shades, or else they could blind you. They glow green, but inactivated are clear.
Soutoke: These are a weak version of the other crystals. They have a very dim glow, give off a subtle heat, and are essential to maintain proper health. Without them, someone might actually get sick! They are a clouded clear.

ADDITIONAL FACTS: Malums sleep for only a few hours each morning, they are mostly nocturnal. They have the perfect government system. They have huge iron deposits, and thanks to the human discovery of electricity and their crystals, they can make almost anything. They raise about four dozen cattle per thousand Malums deep underground for the meat (don’t worry, the animals are very well treated, and they are so deep down that they only need Loi crystals 24/7), hides and milk, and sheep for wool.

There are caves that, with proper crystals and a lot of maintenance, have come to produce edible foliage, which the Malums tend and cultivate. They don’t have money, they barter their wares. Very few farm animals are killed, they mostly hunt at night the rabbits and snakes that multiply like crazy out on the surface.

Most Malums are betrothed to a partner at birth and marry them when they become adults (17). Of course, they can decide against it, but if they do they most likely won’t find someone else to marry. They usually just go with it.

Before you go thinking the Wastes are just an Eden with a bad name, let me just remind you that, even with the crystals, the temperatures are very extreme. There is a small population because the government regulates when you can, or cannot have a child, and who may or may not, based on how much food is being brought in and genetics. Food is hard to come by, though they try to grow as much as they can, and water is treasured. A scientist who discovered a new crystal is worthless compared to a farmer who has successfully grown a bumper crop or a child who discovered a new spring. It’s a hard life, and they all hate it, but those who don’t know anything else live with it. Life is precious and killing is a crime against yourself, but when you are the dominant species and still dying out, there’s no time to be a humanitarian.

The still night air was particularly cold. This was the time when the creatures of the Wastes came out of their sleeping to eat the mosses that we couldn’t stomach, but it might not have been warm enough for them. The surface was such a gorgeous place, what with the stars, the horizon, even just being able to see the rocks touch the sky. The sky went on forever, unlike the melancholic corridors in the caverns. Forever…

“Isis, get your head in the game,” Archimedes called to me in a rough whisper. “You’re wandering off.”

Lost in the night I had walked a few yards away from the group. I quickly headed back and searched for prey. The three of us walked along for a few minutes before Delasia sprinted off to the right. With a grin I sat down and watched her. Even for the miniscule things we hunted, it was fun running and striking, something that there wasn’t really room to do in the caverns.

She started back, holding up the hare she had bitten and paralyzed like a trophy. Which it was, in its way. Rabbit meat was the most common, as uncommon as it was. When she reached us I opened the canvas bag I carried and she tossed it in.

“Nice,” I said, smiling. “I’ll bet you could get--”

All heads turned towards the humans’ base, from which was coming a dune buggy. And it was headed straight for us.

Anianna

The way to the surface was an interesting path. It started in the warmth of the caverns and slowly became cooler and cooler as the outside world came closer. Arden had so willingly offered to walk Anianna to the surface. She was late for the hunting party as usual.

"Thank you, Arden," Anianna said when they reached the opening to the surface. "I know how much you dislike hunting. You really didn't have to walk me if it bothers you."

"Nonsense," Arden insited, smiling and waving his hand to dismiss her concern. "It was my pleasure."

Anianna smiled back at him. How she wished she loved him more. She had never felt she loved anyone though, and Arden was her betrothed so she hoped she would just learn to love him. Perhaps it would never happen though...

"'Till tomorrow then?" Arden kissed her softly on the cheek and started back into the caverns.

Anianna smiled a little and emerged onto the surface. The spot where he kissed her tingled slightly and her heart skipped a beat. Perhaps she was falling in love after all.

She spotted the hunting party ahead and ran to them. "Sorry I'm late," she announced when she reached them. "What's happening?" Everyone was turned towards the humans' base where a dune buggy was coming from.

Archimedes

The night had little effect on Archimedes. The lightweight, but very warm coat shielded him from just about anything the wastes could throw at him. Well, with this many people to help out, anyway. He grinned as the rabbit was tossed into their bag - Delasia probably had the best nose amongst any of them, they'd be able to take plenty back to the caverns this night. As Isis began congratulating her, Archimedes started scanning the horizon, vowing he'd contribute a kill of his own to that bag before the night was out.

The drone of a human motor reached his ears - the wretched, sick humming of one of their hopelessly inefficient machines. He smiled, always enjoying what little contact he had with the humans. They were undeniably ill-mannered much of the time, but they were interesting.

"Sorry I'm late," Arianna called, reaching the crest of the small hill they were standing on, "What's happening?"

"We'll find out in just a moment." Archimedes replied, an almost childish grin on his face. He wanted to get a good long look at their buggy when it was close enough. Maybe there was something he could replicate, use to build something that could help the nightly hunts. "Maybe it's something they need to get through to Senator Lycoina?"

“Maybe it's something they need to get through to Senator Lycoina?”

I gave a soft chuckle. “Like they’d actually want to acknowledge we have our own leaders.”

“You shouldn’t think so lowly of them,” Archimedes said back with a half a frown. “What’d they do to you?”

“Personally? Zippo,” I replied, turning my attention to the buggy, which was now pulling to a stop, dust swirling around it. “I just don’t trust greedy creatures.”

Before it stopped a man jumped out, swiftly landing with a thud. I started to map out the area in my mind, figuring the nearest escape route, just in case. The man introduced himself as Kaiden to the lot of us and stated that he wished to speak with… Senator Lycoina.

I stole a glance at a smirking Archimedes and grinned playfully, saying sharply, “Oh, shut up.”

*Sterling*

Sterling sniffed at the air, there was something strange hanging in the cool night wind. It wasn't the usual smell of Malum hunts and fresh meat. It cast a strange, odd aroma and Sterling inhaled curiously. It was one that Sterling was all too much familiar with.

The smell of humans and their earth poisoning contraptions.

He glanced to the left of the hunting plains and saw the sand beginning to settle from the cloud that the buggy had kicked up. He raised an eyebrow at the Malums who were, almost naturally, chatting to a human. Sterling smiled gleefully and crept towards them, hiding in the small clumps of grass along the way, hoping to catch a glimpse of their conversation.

As Sterling made his way near, and was only about five metres away, due to his rather horrible disregard for not looking at his feet, he tripped over a small root, which had been rather accidentally uncovered by the wind. The thump he made as he hit the ground was loud enough to draw their riveted attention.

With sand covering his face and stinging his eyes he looked up and smiled apologetically/guiltily at them. He had never been skilled at hunting, nor sneaking up on prey. He should've known that. Maybe this time, curiosity had overwhelmed his do's and do-not's.

He juggled the pros and cons through his mind as they stared at him during those awfully elongated few seconds; overall, to Sterling, the cons didn't badly outweigh the pros in this situation. Therefore, it wasn't that bad to be seen like this. Maybe he would naturally become part of their conversation.

He hoped . . . no, more truthfully - he believed - that he would.

Anianna

"Do we take him to Senator Lyconia?" Anianna whispered to Isis, so softly no human could possibly have even heard it.

Isis turned to Archimedes and seemed to ask the same thing. Archimedes looked at Kaiden as he thought about it. Anianna wondered what the man could want with their leader. She turned back to where Sterling had been standing awkwardly quiet after making his presence known in such an ungraceful manner.

"Sterling," she said, motioning him forward. "Join the group." She smiled pleasently as he joined the group. It was always nice to have everyone included.

*Sterling*

Sterling grinned and inwardly shouted, Hallelujah!. He then proceeded to wipe off the sand from his face and said with a curiously raised eyebrow, "So, this group is doing what per se?"

Anianna whispered once again however to Sterling, "This man wants to see Senator Lyconia."

Sterling looked past the Malum standing before him and gave Kaiden an incredulous stare, "Whatever for?"

The man obviously heard and his eyes widened a little bit.

(Not very long . . . sorry ^^")

No way. This can not die on the first page. No.

Arden

I headed back into the caverns, a half smile on my face. It was going to be so wonderful having Anianna as a wife. The dry heat came rushing back as soon as he got deep enough, and the glow of the kaithan crystals relaxed me.

A faint rumbling resounded through the metal plates in the ceiling, barely loud enough for me to hear. It stopped me in my tracks to listen. In its time it came to a stop, but by then I had already decided to check it out.

"Do you know what's going on?" I looked behind me to see a short, blond girl come up to me, walking with a surprisingly good posture. "I heard the noise, did you?"

"I was just about to go up," I replied, trying to think of the girl's name. I turned back to the exit to see Anianna and part of the hunting party come back down. Anianna saw me and walked over, the others continuing down the tunnel.

"What's going on?" I asked her. The blond girl came up behind me.

"Hey, Onianen," Anianna said to her, and turned back to me. "Hi Arden. One of the humans came with a message for Senator Lycoina. He insisted on giving it to him himself, so some of the others are going on ahead to notify the senator."

I nodded and took her arm. She seemed to dissapear into a shadow for a moment as I did but soon came back. "Let's join them."

*this is good! let's not let it die!*

Anianna

With Arden next to her, Anianna felt slightly more at ease that she had been. The human was strange and it bothered her that he insisted on coming into the caverns himself. But still, Anianna worried about her ever-approaching marriage to Arden.

They caught back up to the group quickly and it wasn't a long trip to the Senator's quarters. When we arrived Senator Lyconia was standing outside. He went inside his quarters with the human and wouldn't allow anyone else in.

"What do you suppose the human wants?" Sterling asked.

Archimedes crossed his arms and scowled at the door. "I can hardly imagine it being a good thing. No human ever wants to set foot down here."

"Why don't we look at the bright side?" Anianna suggested. "Maybe it's good news. Maybe they are finally recognizing us as a self-sustaining race with our own government."

Sterling raised an eyebrow, "Does anyone else feel like listening in?"

They stared at him for a second, and then Anianna frowned, "What do you mean?"

He grinned, "Well, I am a scientist, afterall," he waited for some sort of recognition, but none was forthcoming, "I have been developing a prototype crystal which captures sound and rebounds the sound to another "reciever" crystal which would then resonate to us the conversation taking place."

"Sorry?"

Sterling grinned, "We would be able to listen in on their conversation. However, as these crytals are very, very experimental they may have some negative unreported actions. If someone sneaks this under the door," he pulled a miniscule crystal from his pocket, "then we should be able to listen in, quite clearly."

"Anyone up for it?"

“Anyone up for it?”

I watched him for a moment, with his bet-you’re-wishing-you-had-thought-of-this-first smirk. I didn’t like him too much, but he had a way for us to eavesdrop, so I had to pretend I could stand that grin. I looked down at the wooden door -- one of the few I’d ever seen – and saw that there was a chip about the diameter of my thumb in the corner.

“First of all, that crystal is half dead,” I said, staring at the hole. “It’s too translucent to be fresh, so I doubt it’ll last long enough to do its whole job. Second, there’s a hole right there.” I pointed and looked Sterling in the eye. “You slip it under the door, unless it’s too difficult a job for the awe-inspiring scientist.”

There was a concealed snort of laughter from someone. Maybe I hadn’t been as nice as I could have been, but it got the point across. He paused, then squatted down and with a flick of his finger, slid the crystal into the room. Sterling pulled another crystal out of his pocket after getting up and held it out in his palm so we could hear.

(Ahh, it's alright. A lot of people's characters ending up hating mine a lot. *sigh* I just must make horrible fictional people up.)

Sterling

Sterling regretted doing it himself. He had asked another person to do it so that would show they were as interested as he was. He let out a sigh as he pulled the reciever crystal from his pocket, "Okay, here we go . . "

There was silence. Everyone gave him a dissapointed/angry glare. He grinned knowingly and gave the small crystal a small tap. It began glowing and audibly transmitting what the two people were saying.

They all leaned towards Sterling's hand and crystal to listen.

(No idea what they're saying. TexanWriter - any ideas?)
