2012

Anyone here seen the new movie based on the theory that the world is going to end in 2012? Coincidentally, the movie is called 2012. Obviously. I saw the movie just yesterday (Saturday), and liked it quite a lot. It's really believable...but hard, seeing what happens.
Anyways, didn't see a topic like this so feel free to tell me if there is one.

Or, in less sarcastic terms, I can't say I like that movie or plan to see it, even in the slightest.

Don't plan on seeing it, I'm just not into the whole end-of-the-world type movies. I read the Left Behind series when I was younger and was completely terrified, and then a little while ago I watched the Day After Tomorrow and couldn't wait for it to end, so it's just not my type of thing.

I just saw it! I liked it (and not just because John Cusack is my all-time favorite person ever!) It freaked me out! But, I'm really excited for 2012! It's weird thinking of what will happen to you in two years. I wonder if I will survive...?

I'm going to see it today. I'm not excited as such; to be honest it just looks like a load of things blowing up. But then again, I'm actually looking forward to the Mayan history aspect of it. If there is such an aspect that is.

I haven't seen it, but I have seen adverts for it. So far, it looks like this:

It seems really hard to take seriously. Then again, the whole 2012 prophecy stinks of stupidity. Why do we say that the Mayans are right in this prediction? "Because they lived so long ago"? There were people older than the Mayans, but we don't agree that the best life is one where you can eat the brains of a mammoth.
Yeah. I might see it, just for laughs.

Actually, the Myans predicted many things in history, such as the Twin Towers falling and the American depression.

Uh, yeah... Anything could be twisted around anything. If I said anything really vague, it could be twisted to fit anything in the future.
I can't say anything more about the 9/11 prediction, but I will say this: I don't believe that the world will end on 2012 because there is no evidence. For all we know, the Mayan calendar writers took a rest before writing the 2013 calendars. OK, I'll have to look it up more, but, well, I'm a big empiricist, and I don't believe anything without substantial evidence.

Fancy that. Today my Granny who's into all this mystical stuff sent my parents an email about how the world was going to end in 2012 and we were all laughing about it. Then my mum was getting exasperated becasue my granny would want her to believe it and if she didn't then she'd temporarily disown her as she usually does when she tells my mum about some crackpot theory and she doesn't believe it.

First, I did not want to see the movie. The posters were corny. Especially the one with the Dalai Lama standing on the Himalayas and everything is flooded.

I expected 2012 to be terrible. After seeing 'Knowing', I wasn't keen on disaster movies because 'Knowing' is probably the worst film I've seen.

However, 2012 was not really too bad at all. It wasn't great because I think it tried to tackle too many things in a single movie and it all ended up being unpolished. For example, concepts on humanity, like compassion, bravery, familial love... then it tried to revolve around the story of a family... and it tried to have proper scientific grounding. Epic fail on 2 accounts. The humanity and the scientific grounding. It gives you snatches of it here and there but it's just left so raw that in the end it's indigestible.

But, I will say that as far as special effects are concerned and as far as John Cusack's amazingness is concerned, the movie is definitely worth a see.

I like to think that it's because "12" is the last number in the months.

i.e. 01/01/01, 06/06/06/, 09/09/09, and 12/12/12

I personally think that the number 23 would've been used if Catholics were involved. Something like 12/23/12 because 2 divided by 3 = 0.666

Honestly, my opinion is that 2012 is bogus.
How could something about us dying really come true?
Old writings in a book are believable?
They predicted that the world was going to end before and it never happened.
They can make a movie, write books, have shows about about it, doesn't mean its going to make it official.
We were put here one way, and no other way can change the way we got here, unless it reversed.

Whooo! Watched it, just today!

What I have to say is this: I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Seriously, I loved the cinematography, some of the acting, John Cusak, and the fact that the characters were easy to relate to.
If you don't think about the 'scientific' base (solar flares causing neutrinos to heat up the earth's core? Hello?), it does it very well. You know, you actually can care about all the people dying.
Then again, I got a headache after it, due to the sensitivity to light. For those who dislike the feeling of the back of their eyeballs aching, this is not the movie for you.
Otherwise, it was fun, used that old moral lesson of 'Lifeboat Earth' (the philosophical conundrum), and nick-of-time. Would it have been the same movie if John Cusak's character, Jackson, got the map in time, got into the plane, and they were able to get off the ground an hour before Yellowstone National Park completely cracked, leaving them to sit around in awkward silence? Nuh-uh, I didn't think so.
Also, for a movie about the Apocalypse, its very optimistic. Just thought I'd say that.

Good movie, don't take any of it seriously.

Haha, I agree with you about ''Knowing'', that movie was absolutely horrible and Nicholas Cage needs to go crawl under a blanket somewhere and be ashamed he ever agreed to act in that movie!

I'm not a huge fan of ''end of the world'' movies either but I would go and see it just for the special effects alone.

Personally, I think the idea is just ridiculous, no one can predict when the end of the world will come.

I don't get Nicolas Cage. I have watched... (dun dun dun duuun!) two movies with him in it, Knowing and The Weatherman.

The Weatherman was actually quite good. Except for Nicolas Cage. You know, it had good writers, and it was trying to do something different, but for Nicolas Cage. Even when Michael Cain was in the scene, again, it was but for Nicolas Cage. Like he was some kind of black hole that sucked away all that was bleak and interesting about the film.

Knowing... I didn't really think much of it. I was hooked by the advert's little catch-line 'What happens when the numbers run out', and vowed to see it. And I did, on a plane. Unfortunately, I just found it bleurgh. Honestly, none of it seemed to hit me as 'outstanding'. Yeah, it had a good storyline, but it dragged it out and out and out, til I wanted to reach inside the screen and beat Nicolas Cage to death with a rolled up Flight Safety Manual. It just didn't work.

I don't get his stardom. He's a bad actor, and he's not especially good-looking (which excuses it in the way of people like Keanu Reeves *shudders and brings out the same stake used on Robert Pattinson*). Why is my science teacher so excited about him turning on the Christmas lights in Bath? What? I don't care that he's one of the Coppola family, he has no business in movies, or in making anybody think 'Wow!'

Yeah. I just had to rant about this somewhere. And I've just realized, I'm going to get a lot of hate-replies from Cage fans.
