The Runaway

“Will you marry me?” There was sincerity in his cool, blue eyes.

“I will.” I wrapped my arms around his thick shoulders, not sure if it was the right decision. Did I love this man? Did he love me? Maybe this was just a hoax; never before had a man fallen so hard for a Swane girl.

“That’s wonderful!” He laughed and lifted my petite body into the sky. Surely I was happy, but what would come of this marriage? My John’s bank account was filled with old money, and his house was with high-class citizens, whom I would surely embarrass myself to. John wore expensive suits, and I wore hand-stitched dresses by my mother. The only reason my family accompanied riches, was because of my Uncle, who owned the greatest bar this side of the Comanche Mountains.

“Yes, yes it is.” I smiled as he looked at me, trying to figure out why my voice was not as full of joy as his.

“What is wrong?” He tilted his head to the left, keeping his hands on my hips. I shivered at the cold of the wind that moved the tips of my long brown hair. We were in his backyard, under the great apple tree that was so frequently occupied. What was it about him that made me so scared? His eyes were so welcoming, his touch so gentle, and his words so kind. Why was I so afraid to commit to my dearest friend?

“Not a thing; I am just a bit cold.” He frantically bent down to pick up our books, linked his arm through mine, and led us back to his glorious mansion.

“Some food?” He asked as we entered his kitchen. Big brown countertops lined every long wall, and were covered in soft brown granite. A small icebox was in the farthest corner from the door, and a pantry door lie on the left wall. The room was lit by searing streams of light coming on from the five-or-so windows.

I shook my head. All I wanted was to find an easy way to escape. “Sabrina, listen.” His head was down, as if counting every little piece of wood that lined the floor. “I know I am not the bravest man. I’m not a soldier, or a prince, or any other kind of man you could get, but, I love you, and I want you forever; all to myself.”

He slowly looked up, hoping to see a bright expression on my face. Sadly, there wasn’t. My face was formed into a look somewhere between bored and frightened. “John, I need some time to think. You don’t mind if I leave?” His shoulders sunk, but he nodded, reaching over to me for a hug.

“Don’t be afraid, Sabrina,” he whispered into my ear, before walking back outside. I watched him through the open door for a minute. He stared at the Comanche Mountains, as if searching for some sort of light among the tall brown lumps. What was wrong with me? I had corrupted the one man who loved me for my, well… not-so-rich self.

I walked to the hallway, grabbed my sweater, and left without looking back. It was just a few minutes from his mansion to my small cozy-like home. I walked past men on horses, woman with baskets, and children with books. All of them seemed to be smiling more than I ever had, and they weren’t just told someone loved them.

I reached my front yard, instantly regretting the decision to leave. Once I saw the small house I had to return to, my heart sank. Even our front yard displayed the little amount of money that had gone into our front yard. The grass in the front yard was dying, the fence that lined the grass had peeling white paint, and the once beautiful walkway was overrun by weeds. I stepped up to my front door, taking as long as I could to reach the handle. “Mama, I’m home.” I heard her clanking pans in the kitchen, and followed her noises. As I got closer, the sweet smell of homemade bread embraced my nose.

“Oh, you are going to love her,” I heard my mother say. Who was in my house? My mother barely ever allowed visitors; she wouldn’t even let John come in.

I walked through the doorway to see my mother seated on our dining room table, drinking tea. Across from her was a big man with brown hair. How did he get here before me? “John?” The man rounded his head to reveal features of a man the exact opposite
from my John.

“Sabrina! Sit, we have a visitor. This is Adam. He needed a place to stay, running around the Kingdom doing errands for the King.” Adam nodded, and extended a hand. I shook it, my cheeks turning pink at the sight of this gorgeous man. He had striking light-brown eyes, which flowed into sharp cheek bones. His well-structured face ended with a straight, pointy nose, and nice thin lips. What was it about this man that made me want to leave John and run away with him?

I liked your story very much.
Here are a few things i found a bit awkward:-
1) Don't you think John's house was a little too modern for the medieval times with all those floors and ice-cubes?
2)
Even our front yard displayed the little amount of money that had gone into our it.

3)And then, does Sabrina fall in love instantly with Adam that she wants to run away with him?
4)Also, i felt you could describe Sabrina, John and Adam's looks more precisely.
5) Why doesn't Sabrina actually want to marry John?

But overall, i really like your story. specially its first half.
I am excited to know what happens next. Please PM me if you write more. I will definitely read it. :-)
Enjoy every moment of your life; you never know when it might come to an end...

Hello Captain!
(tries not to think of Jack Sparrow*)
Call me Pink, I'm here to do a review!
So let's start.

First, a few nit-picks.
who owned the greatest bar this side of the Comanche Mountains.

I think you forgot a word.
"Greatest bar on this side of the Comanche Mountains."
“Not a thing; I am just a bit cold.” He frantically bent down to pick up our books, linked his arm through mine, and led us back to his glorious mansion.

You should start a new line after she speaks.

It was just a few minutes from his mansion to my small cozy-like home

I think this would sound better if it was flipped around.
My small cozy-like home was just a few minutes from his mansion.
or something like that.
“Sabrina! Sit, we have a visitor. This is Adam. He needed a place to stay, running around the Kingdom doing errands for the King.” Adam nodded,...

Start new line after her mother speaks.

***
Overall
I think you need to work on starting new lines after a character speaks.
Having them all bundled up like that makes it hard for readers to understand who is speaking.
One thing I didn't really get was why she said she'd marry John even if she wasn't so sure?
Why say "Yes" when you're hanging on a "maybe"?
I might be missing something?
Anyway, this was interesting. The beginning was good, pulled me in =D.
Your characters are interesting but they still need some more ground work so I can
understand them.
Keep writing!

~Pink.

Yo,
this story has nice linear plot so far, nothing confusing, and hints of a world, which it would be fun to find out more about. Only one thing really caught my eye as a certain weak link in the narration - the way the heroine describes hereself, like 'my petite body', 'my long brown hair', etc. They way they are given, these descriptions would fit better a third person perspective. Imagine the difference between this "Scott gave one of his gorgeous smiles and I could see his sexy body relax." and this "I gave one of my gorgeous smiles, and she could see my sexy body relax."
Perhaps you should give her self-description in a slightly different manner, or just get it over with as she looks at herself in a reflection, or have someone comment on her looks.
Good luck!
she got a dazed impression of a whirling chaos in which steel flashed and hacked, arms tossed, snarling faces appeared and vanished, and straining bodies collided, rebounded, locked and mingled in a devil's dance of madness.

Good job introducing the conflict. So there's a love triangle just cropped up, and she didn't really seem to want to marry John, which makes me wonder why. Its a reson to continue reading, so the hook's there.

The characters don't seem as 3 dimensional as they should. Sabrina's hiding something from John, so she'd probably be feeling a bit guilty. Some body language could help here, as well as some of her thoughts. Also, she's been engaged for ten minutes and she starts getting the hots for this other bloke she's never met. Does she feel like a slut or what? Show us these thoughts and feelings, and you'll have yourself a much more realistic character.

Some of the dialogue didn't seem to fit at all.
“I know I am not the bravest man. I’m not a soldier, or a prince, or any other kind of man you could get, but, I love you, and I want you forever; all to myself.”

Where did that come from? Nothing Sabrina said or did accused him of not being brave. If it's linked to something that happened before, you should reveal this in Sabrina's thoughts to clarify for the reader. If you just want to portray him as so lacking in self esteem that he spouts off bad stuff about himself without reason, again some thoughts from Sabrina could help clarify this.

Even our front yard displayed the little amount of money that had gone into our front yard. The grass in the front yard was dying,

I'd advise you don't say front yard too many times because the front yard could be described as something other than the front yard. That way you wouldn't have so many front yards in your front yard.

The setting was well thought up, with the contrast between John's rich house and Sabrina's poor house. I think it could have been executed a bit better though. You kind of clump the description together. On the other hand, this goes to good effect when she returns to her house, becasue its as if she's spotting all the bad details after having been in John's house.

The fact that Sabrina's mother doesn't usually have guests but lets Adam in is a good bit of foreshadowing, hinting that he's not just any old royal messenger. The characterisation for Adam is nonexistent as of yet, but then again he's only just popped in. You've mentioned his appearances, but not his clothes, which give more of an idea of personality than facial features (becasue people have control over what they wear but not their facial features).

To finish off, your style seemed fine. I don't know much about critiquing style, but I can say that none of your sentences seemed overly long or jaringly short, and I didn't get confused by any diction.
Q: Where do you go to buy shoes?

A: At the shoez canal, lol.

Awkward! That's the first thing I have to say. To me your speech seems raged and, well, it doesn't flow. But, it's okay, it happens to me, too. Here's a tip- use contractions for instance...

“What is wrong?”

It's just awkward.

Second I want to know what's going on at the very start.

Hope that helped!

I like you story as it has great potential though you may want to show greater thought about the time frame. Some of those things seem a bit modern, but overall a good section!

OK I am here to review!! Lets get started Captain:
Did I love this man? Did he love me?

Why is she saying yes if she doesn't know if she loves him? Hmm makes me wonder why. Maybe you couold explain?
"What is wrong?”

Akward much? This could be made into a contraxtion.

“I know I am not the bravest man. I’m not a soldier, or a prince, or any other kind of man you could get, but, I love you, and I want you forever; all to myself.”

Where did this come from? Maybe you could use Sabrina's thoughts to explain why he's saying this.
Even our front yard displayed the little amount of money that had gone into our front yard. The grass in the front yard was dying,

Um, I think you could use another word or something instead of repeating front yard.
“Oh, you are going to love her,”

Who is she talking about here? Its makes you say What?
she wouldn’t even let John come in.

Oh, forshadowing, I love it!

I think that we could use a little more desription on the looks of all three major characters.

Over all I really like this. And I hope you write more about this mysterious stranger!
Can't wait to read more, PM me if you write more.

Tata for now!
Jhinx called me old. Rude.

I thought I'd read a couple of your things since you reviewed so nicely on mine!!!

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed this. You kept a good pace, so things weren't rushed at all by at the same time you kept it interesting. You captured the feelings of a girl perfectly. There's always that aftershock after being asked to marry someone, and you portrayed that intensity quite well. You also gave the reader a lot of information without info-dropping it all, which I have a bad habit of doing, so I am going to take a few pointers from that!! As a reader I could relate to the turmoil Sabrina is feeling, because of John's status in the world compared to her's, and then the introduction of a stranger who pulls up some very strong feelings that she doesn't know where there - especially since John is in the picture. And I've never been proposed to, which is sayinng something!!

The only problem I had with it was the time setting. I wasn't sure whether if it was modern or medieval, set in fantastical world.

Other than that, I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to read the next chapters!!
