It's 1880, London. Mary and Ellen Woode are two sisters from a wealthy family. Mary has had three proposals since she turned sixteen two years ago, and turned each of them down. Ellen is getting frustrated that her sister is, as she sees it, imposing on her (Ellen's) time, and begins a mission, with the help of her mother Isabelle, to find a suitor to whom Mary will take a shine.
Mary is secretly teaching Bertha, the maid, to read, and Bertha constantly sneaks off to practise, dipping in and out of fantasy worlds which become more elaborate as her confidence and ability grows. However, this means her work is getting neglected and her pay has already been cut. Her entire pay-check is send home to her mother, her ill father, and her seven siblings.
Mary's best friend John is becoming increasingly infatuated with Emily, a woman whom he met a fortnight ago, and is attempting to devise a plan to woo her.
Meanwhile, several paintings and ornaments have gone missing from the family home, and no one seems to know where they've disappeared to.
I'd like to write for Mary.
