Newbie!!

Hello all! I'm Jack-a-Lynn. I was referred here by a friend, so I thought I'd check it out. It's hard to find places to discuss writing, so I'm hoping this turns out to be a good place.

Anyway, I'm 21, a theatre major, and have a pretty morbid sense of humor. I love dark stories, especially fantasy and sci-fi. Friends who have read my writing often tell me I torture my characters too much, but I say there's no such thing! Putting them through hell during the story makes the payoff that much better at the end. Right now, I'm working on finishing a fanfiction that I hope to have done by Christmas. After that, I have some sort of "broken fairy tale" ideas that I want to play with.
Some of my favorites are Lord of the Rings (and all its associated histories), East of Eden, Shakespeare, and Arthur C.Clarke. I also really like a good werewolf/vampire story, but I'm really picky about those.

I'm looking forward to reading and reviewing things! I take constructive criticism very seriously, but I would never, ever flame anyone, since flames are about as helpful as an "omg sqquee dis is teh awesomez!!!11".

I would have to agree with you. Torturing your characters is the singularly most effective way to get your audience to empathize with them. And if you like fantasy and tortured characters, try Ship of Magic, by Robin Hobb. She's sometimes slightly melodramatic, but she's the most ruthless fantasy authoress I've ever read.

So, I don't really review fan fiction, but you'll find that many people here do, so you won't be left alone. And with the taste you've got in books, I don't suppose your fan fiction will look much like the generic sort either. I'm not so much a Shakespeare fan, but Steinbeck, Tolkien and Clarke are all awesome!

Hi Jack! I'm Kamas and I'm super glad to meet you.

Well I'm not much of an actress, I can't help but giggle.

I love Shakespeare. Over the past year I've read Twelfth Night and A Mid Summer Night's Dream. As you can guess if you have read them my favorite characters were Feste and Puck What pieces have you read? I also love a good fantasy story! You'll find the opinion on the Twilight series very mixed here. I loved other fantasy books though. What are some titles you enjoyed?

I'm not sure if your friends shared the basic rules and information, so just for your knowledge:

- There is a 2:1 review ratio. You have one freebie post for literary work. Use that so that you can begin increasing your review ratio. Note: The review ratio will be increased to 3:1 on October 1st, then 4:1 in November, then 5:1 in December. But don't worry it's just an experiment the Webmaster Nate many stop at 4:1 or even at 3:1.
- No chatspeak, but as with what you said above I am guessing you donot like it.
- Caps are annoying. TYPING LIKE THIS gives people headaches.

Red: Administrators. The few that are to thank for YWS. Nate, the webmaster has worked his head off getting this site and shiny it is now.
Black: Regular Members. Like you and me but these people are all great!

So I think you have already read the ruels and guides that we have to respect here in YWS for the maintainance of this place.
So I think it's time to do some introducing but I think you should introduce yourself first lol.

What are your favorite books? YOur favorite authors? Your favorite movie? What color do you like? What do you think of YWS?!!

I am excited to read your work. I have the same problem. All my characters come out having someone around them die, or other depressing things such as that. I love this Site, and I think you will, too.
Fairytales are my favorite to write. The way I write, which is a mix between Zoey Dean and Lewis Caroll. My two favorite authors! I have a new idea about a girl who gets trapped in her own dream, and am very excited to write it.

You seem like an interesting person and I hope you're enjoying YWS so far. I liked A Midsummer Night's Dream and I'm trying to read Hamlet at the moment, but it's proving a bit tricky since English isn't my first language, not to mention Shakespearean.
