Laelia seemed to hot here, in her striped over sized sweater that was curled at her wrist. She sat with 19-year old Zack and some of his friends, Morgan and Jaden, at a busy restaurant in Chicago. The night was cold but inside the heat was killing her. She even wore a sweater underneath her zipper sweater and then another jacket. God knows how cold it gets in Chicago.
“I can’t believe you guys are dating,” Lia said towards Jaden and Morgan, not really wanting more conversation on her birthday. Zack was stupid enough to bring up in the first place; she always hated attention.
Lia sighed and got up, “It’s too hot, I’m going out for a breather.” She walked off leaving Jaden with his hands up as if he was confessing to the police-Morgan and Zack- that the casualty that had just occurred was not his fault.
She had finally gotten approval from her Aunt Clare a few months earlier to live with Zack in Chicago and plan on attending university of Illinois. Although getting her to agree was hectic and took a lot of guilty measures.
A loud gasp escaped Lia’s lips as she stepped back. He was holding a monster, a thing, a something that she couldn’t exactly name. It looked like a tall skinny person, it had glowing green eyes and its face was flat and lips stretched showing rows of sharp shark-like teeth. Its ears were long and pointed and from behind its naked back sprouted skinned wings with sharp talons, it had a tail, long and whip like. Its skin was a dark gray, stretched so there were no wrinkles anywhere.
He looked down and whispered something loudly:

Lia was sure, extremely sure she saw something glow like heavenly light, it blinded her and she stumbled back falling onto the cold floor.
“Who are you?” His voice was clear and angered. “What did you see?” He growled at her.

partly because she knew she wasn’t going to stay here for any longer.
“I think we should have a surprise party for Lia next month, since it’s her birthday you know? Finally, she’s going to be 18!”
Laelia said rolling her eyes at him.
Lia, it was her nickname since Zack said her full name strangled his throat. And as for finally being 18, it felt good, since being 17 and one year lower than everyone made her feel puny.
Zack winked at her. He gulped down another glass of beer and set it down.
Jaden always had his hair in spikes and dressed in random clothes, he never cared how he looked like as long as the clothes fit. He was pretty skinny except he had long legs, which Lia and Zack always joked about. His arm was hanging loosely around Morgan’s shoulders, which seemed to be enjoying his arm’s company.
Morgan was one of those girls you just hated, she always had the perfect everything and she still hung out with people like Lia and Zack. Lia never really understood why.
Zack shrugged
Lia sighed and got up,

except things aren’t going too smoothly. Money’s been tight lately. Lia’s parents died last year and she had to camp out with her Aunt Clare in Wisconsin for her senior year, which was terrible. She had finally gotten approval from her Aunt Clare a few months earlier to live with Zack in Chicago and plan on attending university of Illinois.
A sound interrupted Lia’s thoughts abruptly.

He turned his head
He was most annoyed at Levi’s behavior this afternoon. Not only did he run off to chase a demon on his own but almost killed a girl.
“Bring her to the Academy! She’s one of us Alex, she’s a Keeper!”
Damn, don’t run off like that Levi, scared the shit out of me!”
She was probably the strongest girl in the Academy.
He smiled lightly, “don’t worry though, I have it.”
Levi said as if Katherine asked the dumbest question of all time,
“she shouldn’t have gotten to far by now,” Levi turned around getting himself ready to launch himself onto an all out mission to capture the girl but a hand held him back
He was gripping Levi’s sleeve pretty harshly.
Alex narrowed his eyes, “We’ll come back for her later.”
Katherine nodded,
“Right Levi,
Levi rolled his eyes and sighed, “Fine, whatever you guys want.”

It's pretty good. I really enjoyed reading it. I have a question though: Have you read the Mortal Instruments? Because your story sounds strangely similar...
“I think you’re stupid,” Laelia stated.

“Have a nice day, munchkins,” she said with another fake smile.
We’ll see how he likes that, she laughed.
“What if someone’s in trouble?”
what he was holding…a monster, a thing, a something that she couldn’t exactly name.
pushed her against the wall with force.
“You know I’m capable of paying for our meal, right?” Lia asked bitterly.
“I’m a dude, and dudes always pay for ladies.”
Lia rolled her eyes. “You’re not a dude, Zack, you’re my friend.” ...
The waitress, who seemed to be ticked off, replied as nicely as she could. “I think the dude has a point.”
