Psychics

Im writing a novel about a whole race of psychics.

Not as in shawls and crystal balls - but like real people with supernatural talents.

Anybody know of, or even believe in, real life encounters of this sort.

I don't know anything about psychics really but after reading your last paragraph I couldn't resist posting I'm a triplet so I have two other sisters. One of them looks a lot like me (no we're definitely not identical!) and we're really close. Sometimes, out of nowhere, we say the exact same thing or were thinking the same thing, or sometimes we finish what the other was saying. It's kinda weird and it freaks some people (me included sometimes) out.

Yes I believe in psychic ability. We all have the potential to be 'psychic', but we do not all have the ability. The potential comes with being born, it's innate, but ability is effected by outer and personal limitations. Like, if you lived in an area that was very much against psychics, never heard of psychic ability, raised in a religion that frowns upon the supernatural, or you think it's all fake, then you will have a significantly harder time developing these skills. I know several real psychics, some born having their ability nurtured, others working up from the bottom. I'd fall under the latter. I personally don't believe being psychic is a talent, rather a skill of perception and awareness that flourishes in certain paradigms.

It's all a load of tosh, but I know a bit about it. I used to really be into lucid dreaming, and whilst that's a real, scientific concept, it naturally attracted a lot of New Age believers as well, so I learnt about psychic abilities and stuff from them.

Actually downloaded an e-book on how to do it. It involves picturing energy flowing from the centre of your body outwards into your hands. Picture it, focus on it, and with enough practice you'll feel your hands begin to tingle. (In reality, this is pure placebo effect, but never mind). You can then learn to project this energy is a number of different ways. By making something move, for example. Telekinesis (or TK) is using the power to move something, pyrokinesis (or PK) is the power of fire/to heat things up, etc, etc.

What should be noted: this sort of 'real life' psychic ability is very sort of, shall we say, 'low level'. You can't make a book fly off a bookshelf and into your hand, but you can make a specially designed paper wheel spin around a bit if you put it in a bowl (in reality it's the heat from your hands pressed against the bowl that's causing the movement, but nevermind).

I'm guessing you may want something a bit more impressive in your story? I suppose you could use these psychic abilities as a starting point, and then build upon them to make them more flashy.

I know all about astral projection and out of body experiences too, if they're of any interest to you. Actually, I know more about this stuff than psychic abilities, which I have to admit, I'm rather shaky on; it's been years and years since I read about it.

I would say no. Just on the basic principles of creating a character with flaws, an immortal psychic might look too much like a perfect character/an undefeatable one. Unless you can give them a good weakness that shows up rather often and/or is easy to get, then you get a character who can deal with everything that comes his way with ease.

I get what you're saying - but just because they're immortal doesn't mean they're invincible, does it?

I'll jump in here and say no, of course it doesn't, but an immortal psychic? That just seems like you're pushing it. Why don't you try going for long-lived, if you want to make them a bit different? I think combining immortality with psychic ability is just a bit over the top.
