The book I am recomending is called the Underneath by Kathi Appelt. It is deffinently one of the best books I've ever read. It is kind of poetic and mysterious and so sad in some parts, and it has a GREAT ending that I loved. It is about a dog who is taken care of by a horrible man an all of the suddon a cat and her two babies come and they know that if they are seen, the man will kill them. You have to read this book.
