This is non-fiction, but it isn't the usual esay, a tale, a column or some event that I read in the newspaper and want to discuss it here. No. This...This is real. It's about something some people can't take back or understand. I can't describe it any better that, so just please read on and I don't want you to criticize my spelling or the way I tell a story. I just want you to have an open mind and take it all in. Try to understand.
It doesn't always have to be a psychologist to understand what goes on inside the mind. It doesn't have to be a police officer who has been on the force for a million years and seen everything there is to see. All it takes is for a friend or a stranger who has been there and seen and felt the greatest fear flow through like an electric shock.
A psychologist may give you a dozen diagnoses and use as many complicated words there are possible to describe what any one, any age, thinks is impossible.
When I said fear in the second paragraph I'm not talking about a phobia. It's something stronger. This fear causes the sane to become the insane, for normal happy-go-lucky mothers to become a stranger in their most normal and habitual environment. This can cause anyone to act out violently and for one to become depressed and foriegn. Some people don't understand this, or choose not to believe it.
So, they say drugs can help these people, but I believe differently. My dad had issues and he took the pills. He wasn't himself, though he wasn't depressed any more. That's off topic. My point was that a psychologist, a therapist, a doctor, anyone who says they understand-even if they are trying-and haven't been there, haven't felt the fear, the helplesness and sense you won't make it, is lying. Even if it is for a good reason.
I'm not giving the insane and the violent an excuse, of course they have used this excuse to plead mentally ill in court, it's not what I meant. I'm just trying to help you, the reader, realise there is more than meats the eye. Look beneath the surface of a drug addict, a murderer (though keep in mind not all murderers are insane) even a mentally ill person;they all have a story that can explain why they've ended up the way they are.
The one thing I do agree with the psychologist and the doctors who "specialise" in this sort of thing is that it can be cured. Although not all of them want to be cured. I say cured meaning be rid of the days they sit alone and pray for death or God or whatever to let them go because it's not a desease it's not an illness. It's something that once you have experienced it, you can't not feel it every day of your life. But, it doesn't mean you have to let it control you and your mind forever.
All they need is to realise they can over come this obsitical. Many have, but many haven't.
I wrote this because so many times have I heard my friend say she hates her dad because he raped her sister. Don't get me wrong, she has the right, but she shouldn't be afraid of him just because she doesn't want it happening to her. She's told me that's why she hates him. She should be comforting her sister or trying to talk to her even if she says "it's alright I'll be fine". Because right now she's lying through her teeth and she needs someone that's able to try to help her.
Her sister will testify in court, but she won't discuss it with cops or her step mom or real mom at least not personally. And if my friend refuses to help, only her sister can help herself, and it is much harder to put everything on your own shoulders and carry it alone.
So even if you haven't been there done that, talk to your friend when they need you. It may not always help, but maybe if they see the light through the darkness and remember how much you wanted to help...They just may come back and tell you everything or close to it anyway.
Just don't say "I understand".
