I woke up to my alarm clock blaring; I shifted over and slammed it off. As I walked toward my attached bathroom, I felt my eyes. They were still swollen and itchy, from the crying last night.
I stepped into the warm water of the shower, and washed my hair. I stepped out and looked at my reflection in the 7 ft mirror. My 5’4 ft body was covered in bruises, I had two stitches on my right leg and left leg, and my right arm. I blow dried my hair, until it came done in light bronze waves. I also put on eyeliner and mascara on my blue eyes, before heading to the closet.
I pulled out, my black skinny jeans and favorite red v-neck t-shirt. I pulled on my converse and my grey sweater before heading down for breakfast. I made my self some scrambled eggs, then walked down to the corner of the street and waited for the bus.
“Thank god” I muttered under my breath. No one was at my bus stop; which means I won’t get the ‘new kid’ look. The school started a week ago, today is Wednesday, my first day. I took out my I-pod and listened to ‘Forever the Sickest Kids’ until the bus came.
“Miss can I see your pass?” The driver asked. I searched through my bag, and pulled out the small piece of paper.
“Thanks.” I grunted and kept my head down, as I sat in the middle of the bus, by myself.
“Hey there sweet thang!” I heard a guy shout; as he sat next to me and put his arm around me.
I gave a quick nod, not wanting to talk to him. You could already see, he was full of himself and knew it too. He’s those types of guys who think they can get what ever they want. I looked up at him, to see he had brown hair, and hazel eyes, he wasn’t half bad, but his personality…… That seems to be a completely different story.
“Don’t call me sweet thang,” I hissed under my breath.
“Ooo your feisty, I like them feisty” He tried moving his eyebrows in a seductive way, but it just looked like a worm that just got cut off.
“What’s your name?” He asked. Just be polite and he’ll leave soon; I kept repeating.
“Riley.” I murmured.
“Well Riley; my names Scott. Scott Andrews.” I stifled a laugh, was he trying to be James Bond, or something?
The bus stopped, and I looked through the window. The school was long and rectangular, though it was actually in a shape of an ‘H’. The school was attached to an all French private school.
I stepped off the bus and headed up the front stair case. I stepped into the main office, and saw 2 different desks, both occupied. I have no idea which one I should go to. I decided to go to the one on my left, which was the closest.
“Excuse me?” I asked quietly. The lady looked up and smiled.
“How can I help you?” She asked, with a bright smile.
“I’m new, Riley Davidson. I was supposed to come yesterday, but something occurred and well it was impossible for me to.” She looked at me quizzically, than nodded and handed me; my schedule, gym t-shirt, locker number and lock, and a school map.
“Thank you.” I smiled and walked away.
I’m in grade 11/ sec4. First period: French, drama, recess, advanced applied science, math 446, lunch, English, gym, history.
Through the map I found my locker. As I paced through the halls, I would get starred at. They were all different awe, disgust, scared, astonished, and the list goes on and on.
“Hey; you’re new here, I’m Crystal.” A girl with blond hair and brown eyes chirped. She was about 5’5 and slim like me. Though she seemed like a really hyper always happy girl. Crystal was I guess my new locker buddy. She was wearing a flower patterned dress with a black cardigan and flip flops.
“Hi, I’m Riley.” I smiled. We talked while getting are books, apparently we had the exact same classes. At least now I won’t be alone all day.
The day passed in a blur, of stares and whispers, but thankfully Crystal stayed with me and even let me sit with her at lunch. She explained that she came here in sec 2 so she knew how I was feeling.
We walked into English class; we sat in the last row away from the wandering eyes. I mean seriously I was here all day. The only 3 people that weren’t looking was Crystal, a girl who had dark brown hair with blond strikes, she looked about 5’5 or 5’6 couldn’t tell, and she was slim but curvy, with green/blue eyes, she instantly made me intimidated. The other person was a guy, probably the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. He was around 6 ft tall, tanned skin, piercing blue eyes, and black hair, he had a couple of pimples on his face. But they made him look boyish. He looked like he could tower over me, he was buff but not in your ‘I go to the gym everyday’ but yah I got once every 2 weeks’. He was wearing light washed jeans and a blue polo.
I shouldn’t have ogled him for so long because, he turned around and stared at me astonished, until he gave me a glare and turned away. I sat their, stunned. Why the hostility?
“Crystal,” I nudged her, she turned around and looked confused.
“Yah? What’s up?” I pointed to the guy.
“Who is that?” I asked shakily. I felt like he could hear me in some way, though that’s impossible.
“Oh, that’s Max. He’s like probably the most popular guy here, though he’s surprisingly really nice.” I nodded and turned around as the teacher came in.
“Hello class, today it seems like we have a new student, Riley please come to the front of the class.” The old woman read from her chart. Mrs. Patterson looked like my nana; she had black curly short hair, with grey strikes showing through, glasses and was small.
I hesitated; but got out of my seat and in front of the class. “Hi I’m Riley, I moved here 3 days ago.” I looked at the teacher seeing if it was enough but she smiled and continued.
“What a pretty name; why did you move here?” She asked interested.
My eyes became watery; though I made sure to hold them in. The class looked just as interested, though the girl Hannah looked ready to bolt, with a pained expression on her face. I wonder why?
“Um; my D-a—a-d-s job, he,” I took a shaky breath. “He worked for this huge law firm and they put us here.” I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. I looked at the teacher briefly but she looked confused. Hopefully she doesn’t ask the question I’ve been trying to keep.
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Worked? Doesn’t he still?” She asked highly confused. Tears started silently falling down my face. Now the class looked very interested but concerned as to why someone would cry after such a simple question. If they only knew how complicated that question was for me.
“Umm; when we were driving here……a truck…. It hit us….My Dad and brother died.” I held in a sob. “May I please be excused?” I really had to take off the make-up that’s been smearing my face.
I looked back to see her shocked expression, like the rest of the class, they didn’t see that coming. I didn’t even see this coming. Alone in the world by 15, yup definitely didn’t think that would happen. I grabbed the hall pass and left.
I walked down the halls not knowing where to go. After going to the bathroom; I didn’t feel like going back and getting all that sympathy, I didn’t need it. I just needed to be alone, to mourn peacefully. Once their was 2 minutes before the bell I started heading back.
Everyone turned when I walked back into the room. Everyone looked as I thought, sympathetic though I was surprised to see the same intimidating girl sneering at me. I think I just made a new friend. I smirked at her, and that caught her off guard. She looked surprised before continuing to glare.
I gave the hall pass back and grabbed my stuff as the bell rang. I felt an arm snake around my waste, and breathing on the side of my head. I turned around to see Scott.
“How you doing hunny? Need some comforting?” He purred, yes purred. That disgusting, vile, jerk…
“I’m fine,” I said as politely as I could. I was just about to push him off, when I heard low growling. I turned my head to see Max shooting daggers at Scott. I pretended like I didn’t hear and slipped away from the both of them.
I walked back to my locker quickly, dumping everything in and grabbing, the grey t-shirt, with ‘St.Thomas Phys.Ed’ written on it, before heading towards the gym with Crystal.
“That was something,” She murmured quietly. I glanced at her and nodded.
“Are you living with anyone? Is their any family that lives here?”
“Nope” I said while popping the p. “My mom left us when I was 6, and the rest live in Europe. But it’s ok. My Dad has enough money in the bank to support me for the next couple of months, and the house we bought is paid for. Plus I’m emancipated, so I don’t have to go into foster care.” She looked hurt as I said all that but smiled, at the end.
“Well that just means, I’ll have to come over a lot,” I laughed and nodded.
“The house is huge, seriously someone could live there with me, and I’ll never know!” I joked with her.
The rest of the day was a blur, we ran in gym and in history they were talking about things I already knew. I grabbed my stuff and walked swiftly down the hall. I was turning a corner when I bumped into someone; I looked up to see it was Max.
“Watch where you’re going bitch,” He muttered annoyed. I gave a harsh glare before leaving.
“Jerk” I sneered. Why would he call me that? He doesn’t even know me? I had a frown on my face as I made it to my locker.
“What’s wrong Riley?” Crystal asked.
“Stupid jerk…. Had to call me a bitch.” I muttered, grabbing my books.
“Who called you that?”
“Max… I mean he doesn’t even know me, why would he call me that? I only bumped into him.” I asked exasperated.
“Huh… I don’t know, sorry.” Crystal said confused.
I smiled and waved good bye as I headed towards the bus. So in 3 days; I’ve moved to a new country, had my family died, broken my arm, became emancipated, got a new house, went to a new school, made a friend and enemies. My new life has started and I haven’t even turned 16.
Hopefully someone will safe me in some way. I don’t want to be alone forever, I don’t want to feel alone forever and most of all I want my family back.
I got on the bus and realized Max was sitting in the back. I gave him a glare and his friend laughed at me, as I sat down. I grabbed my I-pod and put it on shuffle.
“Didn’t think you would like Skillet,” Scott commented as he sat down beside me.
I smiled “I love them.” I looked slightly back to see Max glaring and his friend once again laughing.
I raced off the bus as soon as it stopped. Seriously that Scott guy was creepy, he kept putting his hand on my thigh, and kept asking me out, over and over and over again. I slapped him as soon as I stood up. Who is that guy, freaking ‘I’m the best guy for you’ yah right.
I opened my gate and went in side. I made myself a smoothie and went to my room. I finished my homework quickly so I went to check how much money we had in my Dads and my bank account.
I had enough to last me a year roughly, since I didn’t have to pay mortgage, thank god. I don’t know what I would have done, if we didn’t have enough money for at least 2 months.
After that I went into my room and played guitar. It was the only thing that let me voice what I felt, besides actually saying it. You would think I would love being alone, but I don’t. I miss my crazy brother running around, yapping about his day. I miss seeing my Dad rush to work in the morning (when he was here). I miss the constant laughter that went around the house. But what I miss the most is feeling loved.
After finally letting out the pent up emotions, I trudged down stairs and made myself some pasta, than plopped myself on the couch. I looked through the channels before settling on a show about the paranormal. It was talking about the development in teens.
“Most kids notice they’re abilities when they’re born, but many only notice them when they either hit puberty or around 16. It’s commonly known for the abilities to awaken through their teen years. We don’t know what triggers it, but it comes on head strong when it is let out. Scientist believes that an experience or even just your hormones are able to release it. We have yet to find out exactly how many people possess these gifts, but we estimate that most of them will be in their teen or young adult lives.”
I turned off the TV, once they started talking about god knows what.
I went back up stairs, and went my computer searching for things to do until I was tired enough to fall asleep. I woke up and did my usual routine; shower, look at my arm and now slowly disappearing bruises, get dressed (In a pair of dark washed jeans, and floral top) and eat breakfast today consisting of pancakes, and oj.
I paid for the bills that came in the mail yesterday and headed towards the bus. Though today I was alone I realized as I walked through my gate. Max was their, looking like a god, which I now think is daily, with a grimace plastered on his face. Wait until he hears what I have to say, he’ll have a deep frown by the time I’m done.
“Hey bitch,” I heard him whisper. “You know for not having a family, you’re living in the biggest house in town?” He smirked.
“You know what? Just shut it, ok. We bought this before the accident. Plus why would it matter to you? And you know what else? Stop calling me a freaking bitch! You don’t even know me. I didn’t do anything also.” I faced him with a glare and poked him. Though the only emotion I got out of him, was amused. He looked like he wanted to laugh.
“You look like a puppy, trying to intimidate a wolf,” He chuckled. I stomped my foot in aggravation and folded my arms. This only made him laugh more.
“I thought girls only did that in movies, I didn’t think they actually did it for real.” He howled a laugh, as the bus came rolling down the street.
“You’re such a jerk. If you ever call me that vile name again, I swear my fist will leave a mark on your face. I’ve taken self defense.”
I took my usual seat and as of my new bus routine; turned on my I-pod and put it on shuffle. The Scott didn’t sit with me today; instead he sat in the seat in front of ‘jerk face’, though he was looking at me like he was undressing me with his eyes, which I shuddered at the thought.
I spent the day doing classes, but for some reason I was excited to go to English class, I don’t know why though. I sat in my seat in the back and waited for the teacher.
“Crystal?” I whispered as the teacher took attendance.
“Yah?”
“Want to come to my house tomorrow for a sleep over?”
“Sure!” She chirped a little too loudly. Mrs. Patterson gave us a stern look before continuing.
“Ok class, today were going to be putting the desks into groups of four, now hurry up! I have to make your seating arrangements.” She clapped happily.
By the end of the sorting their were 7 groups of 4 desks.
She started calling the first group, and I learned that Crystal wasn’t with me.
“The next group, in the middle section of the first row is; Hannah Tsitouras, Joshua Rotelli, Max Stuart, and Riley Davidson.” Yay! now I can technically still sit beside Crystal; though I’ll have to share with the stuck up, the jerk, and the friend on the bus that kept laughing at me.
I sat down so I could be exactly beside Crystal, all I had to do was turn around. Joshua sat next to me, and across sat Hannah and Max on the other side. This will be an interesting group.
“Yo, I’m Josh,” He smiled and shaked my hand, I blushed and smiled back. Josh had pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes, he looked kind of like Lucas Till, though taller and buffer.
“Riley.”
“So where did you move from?” Hannah asked with one eyebrow rose daring to fight back. I leaned back in my chair and smiled, if she wants to fight then let’s fight.
“Florida.” She rolled her eyes and began looking at her nails.
“Alright, these are your new seating arrangements for the rest of the year. I’m going to let you get to know your partners for the rest of the class, but tomorrow we’re going to actually be working, so don’t think you can slack of in my class.” She smiled at me knowingly and sat down at her desk. I didn’t understand the smile though I smiled back either way.
“Great I’m stuck with the bitch,” Max smirked. Josh smiled knowingly also, while Hannah looked stunned, though she hide it well.
“Stupid jerk. Stop calling me that.”
“Nah I’m good, plus it suits you.” He smiled at something but I was too aggravated to care.
“Ok well, it seems like you guys already know each other and now you know me, so I’m just going to listen to this the rest of the class.” I pulled on my head phones and put it on shuffle. I screamed the music in my ears so I could drown out the talking. Max and the others started whispering to each other, at a speed I couldn’t comprehend. They kept glancing at me, but I pretended I didn’t see. What could they possibly be talking about, that includes me?
