Does anyone have any good tips for creating a strong atmosphere or sense of place? I'd appreciate hearing them, as this is something I'm trying to improve.
Description is good, however you can also show the sense of a place by having characters express certain emotions or interact with one another in a way that best conveys what kind of atmosphere you'd like.
Example: Your main character has just arrived on an alien planet. Describe the surroundings, the smells, the sounds. Is it dark and damp? Is it eerily quiet?
Have your character show fear if you want the audience to really believe it is a frightening place.
Just think: "If I was the reader, would I finish this scene and think, 'Wow, that was creepy', or 'That didn't seem scary at all'."
