Prelude
my dream was vivid... and very strange. People were shouting around me. I felt my heart pounding hard against my chest, my breath coming in heavy, shallow breaths. I felt like I was dying, like I wanted to die.
I was in that strange place again, the place I didn't recognize. Maybe it was a hospital but I wasn't sure. It was too eerily quiet, despite the fact of the few people were around me talking. No sound, Not even the drop of a penny, could I hear but that.
Is she ok?
David, I'm scared.
This isn't the first time... we'll have to keep her longer than expected.
sure, anything to help her.
It was my first dream of many to come
Chapter 1: New
All I did was stare. Of course that's all I really could do with my stubborn feet planted to that spot on the cement. An anime freak in a prep over run town. Rich bitches were walking past me at full speed, giggling and whispering about me and the way I was dressed. Yay stereotypes!
"ANGELICA MECINA GO INSIDE!" My uncle, Kevin, yelled for the second time from his car. I saw him drive off before but apparently he had only driven around the school. I groaned, letting my body slack in annoyance.
"ITS ANGEL KEV!" I yelled back to him, hearing the car drive off. I just knew he would drive around the school once again so I bravely walked toward the school that I had no desire to even come near, let alone touch. I paused, wrinkling my nose disgusted and pulled my hair up into a ponytail, pulling my back pack further onto my shoulder. With that, and a deep breath I took a step toward death row.
I opened the doors that suddenly looked barred, My clothes looked striped with black and white.
The open area behind the glass doors said everything about the school as I saw the display case full of first place trophy's, football stuff galore, and the mascot being displayed like crazy. Adding to that, the people were either White or Mexican. Now that I thought of it those were the only two ethnicities I had seen since I got to Aledo, no doubt it was a racist town.
The Cafeteria was filling up quickly with people. The only people that I thought I might have even remotely been friends with looked to intimidating so I avoided them and walked up the large staircase to look around.
Down the hallway from the stairs was the library, my haven. I walked through the doors and past security scanners, meaning either metal was strictly not aloud in the library, or people liked library books a bit too much.
I sat on a couch, spying a group of people across the library messing around and being surprisingly loud for a library.
"SHHH!" I heard the Librarian scold them. Two of the girls started giggling like crazy. The way they looked, they were my kind of people. Two were holding Manga, three of them were just standing there randomly dancing, and not to mention the way they were dressed.
I drew out my own Manga hoping to attract their attention. Because of my shyness level it kept me from just going over there and actually speaking to them. Don't get me wrong I love my personality, It's what makes me, me, but meeting new people is a bit nerve-racking.
I felt the cushions beside me being sat on and I looked over to a grungy looking girl. Her style was that of a boy and her hair looked stringy and like she hadn't washed it in weeks.
"You like anime?" she asked, staring at the book over my shoulder. It was very uncomfortable but I just can't be mean can I?
"Yeah." I stammered. she smiled
"Me too. I’m Lezzy" she scooted closer to me, making me more uncomfortable. "I like Dragon's too. Do you know the proper way to draw them?"
"Not really..." I said mousey, and frankly quite annoyed.
"Well," she started, but I blocked her out, most effectively, seeing a piece of paper fall next to me. I looked up to two of the girls across the room pointing to it. I reached over and grabbed it.
Need help? what's your name?
Is all it said. I wrote down yes and my name, tossing it back. Thank God the girl, Lezzy I think she said before, didn't see.
"Hey Angel!" called the blond. I looked up and away from the girl, a guy coming over to keep the girl busy "come here!" I stood quickly seeing Lezzy stand up as well but the guy caught her attention.
"Thanks." I said appreciatively and sat down on the couch, next to one of the girls that was dancing before.
"No problem." she said. "I'm Nicole, ruler of all these pitiful people." she stated plainly.
"Pfft!" scoffed the blond "yeah and I'm satin himself,"
"hello your majesty." Nicole said, slapping the blonds knee. "we already knew that doofus, if you want to make a point use a different person... or thing, k?" the blond glared through squinted eyes. "That’s Gale"
"Actually My name is Karin Gale Theresa Jakson Younger Seiley." My eyes went wide at the extremely long name.
"wow..." I said
"That's what I said." Nicole told me. "why are you coming hear so late?"
"Not sure... I'm bouncing back after Amnesia I got a few months ago and my Uncle took me in cause my dads in jail." I got some shocked looks that my face had remained straight through that and sympathetic ones for my dad being in jail.
"What did he do?" Nicole asked me. I thought about it, trying to make something in my mind click but it was a failure
“Killed my mom. Kevin, my uncle, said that I was there when it happened but I can never remember it." Nicole looked sympathetically at me
"oooooh!" Gale over exhadurated, catching Nicole’s attention "Does that mean that you went to a crazy house."
"That's for crazy people." a red head boy told her. "she had a memory loss thing." He looked over to me "I'm Brett." I nodded.
"Well you know how slow I am." Gale said, slightly fuming.
"It doesn't mean we're gonna spell everything out for you." Nicole replied matter-of-factly. Gale whined, leaning back in her chair, and kicking her feet. I giggled.
"Hey do you have your schedule?" Nicole asked me. I nodded, picking up my bag and searching it for the correct binder. I removed my schedule from the plastic holding it to the front of the binder and handed it over. her face lightened up.
"We have Biology and Latin one together!" Nicole said "well on A-days. B-days we only have Latin."
"Is Latin hard?" I asked her, hearing the bell ring. everyone stood up, grabbing their bags. Nicole shook her head no, and shrugged.
"I guess it could be. I'm guessing you weren't taking it before." I shook my head no "Well then yes."
We all headed to our classes, I went with Gale and Nicole who's classes were right next to each other I observed the halls, my eyebrows coming together in confusion.
"You guy's don't wear Cowboy hat's do you?" Nicole stopped outside the class and started laughing. she opened the door still cracking up, motioning me inside.
"Hon, the only ones who wear those ugly things are the cowboy's, slash girls when they ride horses." I nodded, a bit embarrassed. At least there were cowboys and cowgirls. I wasn’t wrong about that. I took a seat, semi near her and got out my pencil and sketch book and began to draw.
We didn’t really get to talk that much during class and Latin was hard for my first day, but I knew Spanish would only be that much harder. I heard from Kevin that Latin might as well be a blow off class. Pfft, yeah ok.
The bell rang and Nicole ditched me, which I more than expected, seeing the way that her and Gale were tight and their classes were five steps away from each other. I headed back up to the library for the class period since I had none till fourth. I'm glad that I knew where I was going cause if I asked someone I probably would have been steered the wrong way, what with preps most all being jackasses.
I entered the library waving with a friendly grin to Mrs. Adams, the Librarian. I headed into the Manga isle, carefully avoiding Lezzy, and pulled one book out of the large collection. I observed the comics carefully, never having read it before.
About and hour or so later, twenty minutes before the bell would ring, I heard a chair clash against another out by the tables and my head shot up toward them. A boy sat down reading a fairly large book, his book bag and contents skewed all over the table. He was Black, had hair that hung in his eyes the slightest bit and stood on end on the top of his head. He was very light colored and his most distinctive feature that I could see were his red eyes. A red you never saw on anyone, I mean ever. They looked photo shopped they were so unrealistic.
Besides all that he looked Cold. Not like “oh my god its freezing in here cold,” but hard, mean, scary cold. He looked as if his gaze could shoot right through you and leave you completely breathless with fear. But strange enough you were drawn to him, he had this aura about him that wasn’t bad. Its color was Amber with a hint of rustic red meaning he had personal strength, courage, and yet he was also short tempered
His eyes suddenly shot up, looking at the door and I instinctively turned back to my book quickly, butterflies rushing through my stomach, like any regular person. Through my peripheral vision I saw a girl walk up to him with a more bubbly personality than I thought he could handle. She sat down, throwing his bag on hers.
“So your gonna promise me that you’ll find her this year right?” she asked him, with a nudge at the end of it. She looked over his shoulder when he didn’t respond at the book. He had no desire to answer it. She put her hand over the page with a straight face and he looked up at her, slamming her hand in the book “ow, Damion that really hurt!” she slapped his shoulder. I found this the perfect time to look directly at her. Same colored eyes.
“Then don’t bother me when I read, you know that Rose.” he told her in extreme annoyance. His voice floated airily as he tried to keep quiet, and I could tell his voice was as rough and cold as his exterior. This didn’t bother rose though. all she did was pout as if she was a young child, her eyebrow furrowed in a worried crease that played on her forehead.
“I’m just saying it is junior year, you should at least think about it.” he growled slightly looking in her direction. Her eyes went wide and the crease was gone replaced with unwrinkled, fair skin, adding to her already large forehead. She about burst into giggles, as she stared at his face, in reaction to his anger. “Hey I’m sorry, but you know what He said, Find her and then you won’t go through such hell.” then she said something that was inaudible to me but I heard the word “back“ and “Hell”.
“I’ve done fine on my own thank you kindly.” he told her, opening his book again, I now saw was a Stephen King book. I sighed, turning fully to look at them, my curiosity getting the better of me. I wanted to see what she looked like fully and not just the aspects of her reaction.
Her hair looked fried, yet it shined under the light of the library. It was black streaked with white all throughout her hair and, despite the obvious fried quality, it looked completely natural which was impossible of course. adding to It a red streak covered her bangs. she dressed in mostly black with a hoodie, Colorful beaded bracelets covering her arms along with a necklace that had a red heart on it.
She had small qualities, much like a young kid, but it shaped to her proportions as a teenager. She wasn’t skinny but she wasn’t bloated either. As that thought came into my mind I slapped my leg in disgust. I didn’t like to judge or say someone was fat or describe it in such a way but truth was, whether we liked it or not, us girls thought that way all the time.
“fine on your own.” she scoffed. “fine on your own my ass. Do you know how much you have almost died… Just promise me you will do something about it when you find her.“
“How will-“
“you’ll know Damion.“ Damion was his name…
“Leave me alone Rose.“ he warned. She put her hands on her hips annoyed
“Your not gonna get mama’s blessing.” she scolded him angrily, looking around, making sure there was nobody but them behind her. Good thing they didn’t think to look straight ahead. Dumb asses.
“would you stop calling her that.” he said in annoyance “Call her Anna… or mom for that instance. Not Mama. She‘s not my mom, she’s not your mom,” he turned toward me as my eyes shot to my book. “and we have a visitor…” he said, his words peculiar. I stood up and tread down the side of the book case’s, hearing his chair collide with another. “damn it rose this is why we don’t talk about this in public what if-” his words were cut off and I took a step backward, heading in the opposite direction he was going in and I was sure to get away.
“ahem…” his voice sounded as I ran into his chest. He looked down at me as I turned my head upward to make eye contact with his face. His features were hard and defined. His cheeks looked slightly sunken along with his dark red eyes, he looked brilliantly beautiful. His eyes were even more magnificent up close. If the eyes were a window to the soul, his soul would be very hard to decipher.
“Howdy ya’ll…” I said in a joking, mousey tone. His eyebrows rose. “sorry… I’ll just.” I turned my head down in embarrassment and walked forward, feeling him catch the hood of my jacket.
“not so fast Casanova.” He said aloud, pulling me back and grabbing the collar of my shirt so I couldn’t take the jacket off and escape like I had planned. It was to awkward of a situation than I could handle. Yay making friends right? “You’re the one dropping eaves huh?” he questioned. I pursed my lips, and closed my eyes thinking of him saying dropping eaves, the words playing over in my head. Such a goofy phrase in his dark, loud, rough voice was hilarious.
“yeah.” I choked out, trying not to laugh. obviously he didn’t like people listening to his conversations AT ALL I could hear his friend giggle as well. She wasn’t expecting it either. He growled in annoyance.
“Why did you think it wise to?” he questioned me. I shrugged, still not turning to look him in the eye.
“dunno.” I mumbled. He turned me around by my collar, his hand still on it so I looked him directly in the eye and his arm hung over my head. He was so tall, about a foot and a half more than I was in my four foot seven self. His lips scrunched to the side of his face, bringing his nose a quarter of an inch to the side with them. He observed me momentarily.
“Your name?” he questioned, the stare of demons penetrating me.
“Angel… Mecina.” I heard him breath a laugh from his nose as he stood up straight looking at the bookshelf then back to Rose, who’s eyebrows had risen.
“Irony huh?” he questioned her, his face not changing from his previous expression despite the fact of the, quote unquote, Irony. He stretched his monkey arms over his head and rolled his shoulders uncomfortably, looking back to me.
“What Irony?” I questioned. He stared at me a second more, observing me again and shook his head as if I didn’t need to know. I scrunched my nose in annoyance and shook my head. He walked back to his table and grabbed his things.
“Rosie come on.” he told her. She looked at him then to me.
“here we eat under the stairs on A-days, first lunch?” I nodded and she grinned. “just come on over k?”
“thanks.” I told her and she grinned. I saw one of her papers drop behind her as she walked over and followed him. I picked it up, observing it. It was homework. I ran up behind in time to hear Him talk again.
“Rose what if she heard what we were… that were not hum-” He was cut off as he turned and looked behind as I stood still with the paper in my hand
“If she didn’t know that we weren’t she does now smart one.” Rose mumbled taking the paper, forcefully. Not quite mad but not thrilled either. “thanks Angel.” she mumbled. my left eyebrow rose as she fumbled, cramming it in her bag with shaky hands and walked out the door, following a fuming Damion. I saw her throw her hands above her head in frustration yelling at him through the window, and could hear her get onto him.
Not human… that’s what he was going to say. The wheels in my head that so rarely turned in circles did just that. Not human echoed in my head and it almost scared me. It would have if I was a little wimp. That could have meant so many different things. It could have been a cruel joke. Well a LESS than cruel joke. It was less than I deserved for listening in on a private conversation. It seemed excessively unreasonable. People have done that to me before so its not like it was new… But they didn’t know me. Why would they toy with my mind so soon into our meeting which was less than welcoming I may add.
I sat back in the middle of the library, staring at a book, not even reading it. I couldn’t read it really, I had to think. I don’t know why It bugged me so severely but it did. that’s all I knew. Not human… not human… ah those words tore at me. Coming upon this school for the first time and that was the first thing I heard or knew about this school. Were there more that were “not human” here? Were they just screwing with me? That was the one thing that bugged me more than anything really.
