I reached the second to last step, my heart throbbing with desperate desire. Freedom, my freedom, was beyond this black iron gate – I wasn’t going to give up.
The chains latched around my wrists and ankles wrenched me backwards for the millionth time, making me take a step backwards and closer to where I had just come from. No. I wasn’t giving up. They couldn’t keep me down there, not when I could finally go back and see the light from the sun. Not when I could finally set my eyes upon the one thing I had wanted for as long as I could remember.
Distraught screams cut through my head like ice and the pain throughout my wrists and ankles became unbearable. My ankles bled heavily, my wrists both broken. The row’s yells and shouts pulled me back again, but weren’t able to make me take another step back down the staircase. They weren’t letting me leave. They weren’t going to let me go.
My hands balled up into fists and I yanked the chains forward, my deep oak colored eyes starving for the home I just could not reach. I was able to force myself to one more step, one more to go before I would be rid of this cold, dark underworld. My throat was dry, aching for a drink of water which I hadn’t had for years. My body seemed to be crumbling into the pain inflicted upon me, it couldn’t hold on any longer. My mind said otherwise though, and continued to lead me up the staircase.
With a final attempt at leaving, my left hand shot for one of the gate bars as the rest of my body flew forward, using up what was left of my strength.
Beyond the gate was another flight of stairs. But it wasn’t nearly as treacherous as the one I had been scaling now. Green foliage I hadn’t seen since my death decorated the borders of the wood steps and a little light shone from open areas in between the delicate leaves. Just barely noticeable behind the staircase was a window, belonging to a sanctuary I knew was home. All I ever wanted was a step away. Just one more step…
I felt it. My hand touched the iron gate. It was cold, but at the same warm under my fingers. I had done it. I was going home.
Clank! The chains locked on me fell apart, burned away from the rays of the forgiving sun. Him, along with the moon and stars would see me return, for many more future days and nights together. Days and nights I would never take for granted again. For the first time since my sentence, a smile crept over my face as my eyes fell closed. My body inhaled deeply, getting used to the oxygen which I would soon be breathing. In the back of my mind I knew. I knew that this was the beginning to a new me. A new human life.
My heart shattered as my eyes stared at the iron gate. I had touched it, I was sure. But now it was floating farther away. It was rising and I couldn’t touch the coldness of it with the tips of my fingers anymore. Tears stained my cheeks. I hadn’t made it. Now, I never could. All my weight melted away as I fell backwards, back down into oblivion. Cheers and frantic screams sang out from below me. I soon would be joining them. We’d all live together for eternity now.
Before everything sank away from me, my mind remembered something. Something I had forgotten since I had begun to live here. It was him. His radiant image was pictured perfectly in my mind. As I fell, my smile returned. I had finally remembered him.
My hand reached once more for the gate.
The gate I would never cross.
The world I would never return to.
