Chapter 4: School
I jumped up out of bed the next morning as soon as my alarm clock went off. I ran into the bathroom and stared at my new haircut and how different I looked. I had a quick shower and once I was done it was time to get into the good stuff. I got the hair straightner out of the cupboard and plugged it in. I thought today was a good day to wear my contacts, so I took my glasses off and placed them carefully on the basin. I flinched when my contact connected with my eye but it was in I blinked a couple of times until it was in place. I put the other one in and it made such a difference in the way I looked, without my glasses I looked older.
I got my make-up out of the cupboard, first I put on some eyeliner and mascara it made me look kind of emo so I decided to brighten it up a little. I put some pink eye shadow on and some foundation making sure it didn’t look orange.
The hair straightner was hot enough now so I started to straighten my hair.
“What are you doing in there? I need time in there too, to make myself look good you know.” My annoying brother said through the door.
“There wouldn’t be enough time in the world to make you look good.” I said back.
He laughed. “Least I don’t have glasses and UGLY style and long HIDEOUS hair.”
I forgot that he hadn’t seen me since my haircut; well he’s going to get a shock!
I finished straitening my hair, and flicked it of at the wall I put my new dress and leggings on that I brought yesterday and opened the door to the bathroom.
My brother was still standing there.
“Finally.” He said then he looked up and saw me. “WOW…….what happened to you?”
“I changed.” I said with a laugh.
“Sure did.” he said.
I just rolled my eyes and walked down the stairs when I entered the kitchen both mum and dad’s mouths fell open.
“WOW,” mum said.
“I agree.” Dad said.
“You look great, Muy Bein.”
“Gracias.” I did a curtsy.
“Do you want a ride to school?” dad asked.
“I think ill walk.” I said
“Okay, um do you have your phone ill ring you after school?” dad asked.
Mum and I bothed laughed.
“What.” He asked he looked really confused.
“I’m yea mum can explain, but I’m going to town after school I’m going to buy a new phone and a pair of shoes.”
“Ok, but right now are you going to have breaky?”dadasked
“Sure breaky on the go though.”
“Why are you in such a rush?” Dad looked connfused
“No reason.”
Mum and Dad exchanged glances and just laughed.
I grabbed a bit of bread and started to chew on it, I ran back up the stairs to get my bag and wallet. I walked swiftly into the bathroom and quickly brushed my teeth, and sprayed myself with perfume.
At that time my brother walked past coughing.
“That’s enough.” He said. “It stinks you don’t want to scare Eddie away.”
When he said his name a burst of pain flooded through me.
“We broke up yesterday.” I said coldly.
“Oh sis I’m sorry I didn’t know.”
“Don’t sweet it.” I said “See ya at school.”
I got to school at 8:30 there was only a couple of other kids there not many though, I couldn’t see Lilly or Eddie anywhere. That was good I could plan on how I was going to show of. Was I going to show of straight away or maybe in break? Nothing sounded good enough but I decided break was as good as time as any. So I walked of to class.
In class I could feel people staring at me and notes were flying round the class, and everyone was whispering. I tried to ignore them. It wasn’t that hard because the anticipation to see Lilly and Eddies face was growing by the minute. Worst of all I had to suffer through assembly before I could show off.
On the way to assembly every person I went past stopped and stared I didn’t like all this attention, I wished I could just turn invisible so no one can stare any more. I knew I brought this on myself though.
I slunk down into one of the seats in the hall tapping my foot impatiently hoping this would go fast so I could get out of here.
“Good morning everyone.”
“G—o—o—d M—o—r—n—I—n—g.” we all said.
“Now we have a few awards to give out this morning.”
I moaned this would take for ever.
“These are for people that have showed kindness and have become very confident over the past 2 years.”
I blocked out the rest, I could easily fall asleep i didn’t get much last night I was to excited, but now that I’m here I’m not excited at all I wish I never changed, I wish I was my normal self.
My stomach dropped when I heard my name come across the sound system. I didn’t stand up.
“Catherine Hoax.” he said again.
People were looking round searching for me now. The people next to me were nudging me trying to get me to stand. I wish I could just disappear nobody would miss me. I gave in and stood up. Somebody gasped and it was my reaction to look down and see if I had something on me. I didn’t so I ignored the gasp and walked up to the stage.
“Congratulations, Catherine.”
“Sweet as.” I said.
Everybody laughed at this, I looked out at them all my eyes flicked through all the people, looking for someone to see his expression. I forgot that he hadn’t seen me. My eyes finally found him and his mouth was wide open. I laughed he had some interesting face expressions last time I saw him his face was pain now it was shock. He saw me laughing and he closed his mouth. I turned to walk of the stage having much more fun knowing he was watching.
Once assembly was over I walked out the side door much happier. I felt a tap on my shoulder I just ignored it someone could have easily just bumped me. The tap got harder so I spun round.
“What!”I yelled. No one answered me but I saw who it was, Eddie was standing infront of me looking me up and down. It was very awkward.
“What do you want?” I asked, he still didn’t answer so I just turned and started to walk away.
“Wait.”
“What!”
“What did you do to yourself?” he asked
“Isn’t pretty obvious, man I thought you were smart!”
“Don’t make jokes,” he said “But why? Why did you change?”
“Well…” I began
“Wait,” he said “You didn’t change because of me? Did you?”
“Well no not really.” I replied
“Not really?”
“Well in some ways yea I did change, because of you.”
“Cat why would you do that?”
“Catherine.” I corrected him.
“I’m going to call you Cat because your still my friend.”
I sniggered “Well your not mine!”
“I kind of guessed that, do you think we can ever be friends again?”
I thought about this for a minute, “Ummm Nope.” I said as I walked away. He ran to catch up with me. He was really annoying me now I wish he would leave me alone.
“Shouldn’t you be hanging out with Lilly?” I said her name coldly.
“No she has netball try outs.” He replied.
“Oh goody, you always wanted a girl that played sports.”
“That’s not why I dumped you.”
I laughed “Yea I know.” I ignored the rest of what he was saying.
“Your being childish your 17 for goodness sake act like it!”
“Yea and your 18, you should have had the guts to dump in person not through text!” people were crowding round now.
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Huh, you were going to hurt me either way you did it.” A tear rolled down my check. I was furious that he was making me cry again. I felt my hand lift from the side of me and land on the side of his face with a smack.
“You deserve more than that.”
Girls that were watching were now cheering.
“You go girl!” one girl said
“Damn right he deserves more than that.” Another girl said.
I looked straight into his eyes and said, “We are never going to be friends and my names Catherine.”
I sat by myself at lunch, but I could feel peoples eyes on me. I was starting to get self conscious; I slunk further down in my chair and tried to hide my face.
“Hey Cat.” I heard someone say, I lifted my head to see who it was but I didn’t recognize the person that was now sitting at the table. His hair was dark brown and It looked like he needed a good brush. His eyes were bright blue he dazzled me for a second.
“Oh um, hi” I replied. “I’m sorry I don’t know who you are.”
“That’s okay, I’m new I asked some people what your name was, my names Luke.” He said as he reached across the table with his hand stretched out. I reached across and shook it.
“Nice to meet you.” He said.
“Dido.” I replied as I slunk back down in my seat.
“I saw what happened this morning with you and that guy; he has to be a fool to dump you.”
I could feel myself blush “Thanks.”
“No prob, it looks like he’s still keeping a eye on you though.” I followed his gaze and sure enough Eddie was watching us, when he saw me looking his eyes flashed awkwardly away.
Luke and I both laughed.
“Can I walk you to your next class?” he said his eyes fixed on mine, I had to look away surly he could hear my heart it was just about jumping out of my chest.
“Okay.” I replied
We stood up together and Eddie’s eyes were fixed on us. Was he jealous? Doubt it he dumped me.
“I think he’s a bit jealous.” luke said
It was like he could read my thoughts.
“Um yea maybe, I don’t see why, he dumped me.”
“Maybe he’s having second thoughts.”
“He’s a bit late.”
He walked me right up to the door of my class.
“Well here you are.” He said.
I was a bit confused. “How did you know this was my class?”
“Oh um lucky guess.”
I just laughed I didn’t really care. He didn’t move he was standing awkwardly like he wanted something else.
“Do you want my number?” He asked,
Wow he was fast it took 2 weeks before Eddie gave me his. Out of the corner of my eye I could see Eddie watching us.
“Sure.” I said.
“Cool.” He grabbed a piece of paper from his pocket. “You got a pen?”
“Yup.” I reached into my pocket to get it; he wrote his number neatly on the paper. At the bottom it said Luke xxoo.
“Thanks.” I said I walked into class and sat myself down in the seat. Lilly was sitting across from me she gave me a weak smile, but I just ignored it and stared out the window beginning to daydream. I was interrupted a minute later with Eddies voice.
“I see you got that guys number.”
“Yea and it’s none of your business.”
“Well he just doesn’t seem right for you.”
“He’s much better than you.” I replied harshly.
He stopped talking to me then and I went back to my daydream.
