A good chunk of my ideas start when I read about a certain era in history and think how it could work better then before. Thrown in a character that forces the social rules to change, re-arrange the bureaucracy so that it's more long-lasting. That sort of thing.

Funky Writing Stratagies... This sounds like a fun one.
Write a sentence, get a jellybean. Write a paragraph, get two jellybeans. Write a page, get a muffin. Write 5,000 words, get ice-cream and marshmellows. Write a book, get a gym pass.
Get a picture. Tell someone to draw it. Tell someone else to draw the picture the other person just drew. Do that to five or six people, then look at how each picture changes with different interpretations, and use that as a skeleton for a story.
Close your eyes, stick your thumbs against your eyelids, and write what the funny colours and shapes remind you of. No, don't do that, that's stupid, and dangerous. Try watching clouds, or bath silk.
Sit at the computer. (or a desk) Pull up Microsoft Word. (or a pad) Put your hands on the keyboard. (Or pick up your pen) Let your fingers type, (or write) don't think too hard. Look at the results, build a plot from there.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
Freewriting works best for me in that aspect. I give myself a blank A4 piece, and tell myself to fill it pu by whatever means necessary. Stuff usually evolves from there.

I get inspired by something. That something turns into a quest or adventure. But then who is supposed to journey on this quest and what for? Create a few characters, and then figure out the point of their quest/ adventure.
In summary (because I can get confusing): I look for inspiration and once it's found, I create a plot. Once the plot is created, I make a few characters and chuck them into the story and begin writing. That's basically what I do ^_^

As for me,
I always get inspiration for something when I'm busy with something else,
Then when I finally get my hands on Microsoft Word,
The 'excitement' tends to disappear. So I listen to mmusic to try and get it back.

I think you need to use what's best for you... I'm the sort of person who randomly sits down in fron of the computer and writes. The ideas for my stories and poems come from anything at all, I could have been bored and daydreaming, could have seen something on television... anything at all. I don't have a schedule to write, because I think if you do that you starting thinking of your writing as work and soon it gets boring and annoying, so I write as a hobby and in my free time. xxmimixx

Mine isn't exactly 'weird' but I tend to use music as inspiration.
I've just frinished my third book but when I was writing it, I was stuck at the same point for about two weeks and no matter what I wrote, it seemed like rubbish. So I decided to listen to some music - Paramore always seems to help me. I put 'Decode' by Paramore on repeat and within half an hour I'd written four pages. The lyrics just seem to spark off tangents in my mind.
Whilst listening to the lyrics, I also visualise the scene of my book in my head. I pretend that my book is a film and the music is playing in the background of the scene - kinda random but it seems to work for me
