Okay, so this is a newer story of mine. It is kind of long but I have quite a bit of it of my computer and I wanted to end this at an okay spot. So comment and tell me what you think please.
I stared out the window of my mom's old mini van. "We're going on vacation," she had said last week. I didn't want to go on vacation, it was stupid and pointless for my messed up family to be going to Florida, the most common and expected place to be going for spring break.
She expected this to be fun just me, her, my older sister, and younger brother. So there I was, listening to my IPod and making a disgusted face as my mom passed a plastic bag to my brother so he could puke in it. God help me now, I thought while twirling a piece of my red hair in my fingers.
My dad had passed away from a brain tumor a year ago, we hadn't done much since then and now my mother decided that we needed to do something as a family. In my opinion, we weren't a family without my dad.
"God Jake, could you have a more sensitive stomach?" My older, seventeen year old sister Jessica asked my little nine year old brother Jake.
"Sorry," Jake said. I turned to look at him, I smiled sympathetically. Jessica could be a bitch to him, always yelling at him when he tried to be funny just to cheer everyone up.
He smiled at me, we hit a bump and his eyes widened, and he looked at the bag and heaved into it, his sandy, brown hair flopping around. Mom never took him to get a haircut, his hair was below his eyebrows and his eyes were a goldish color, like my dads.
I sighed and turned around, "Jacoby, you okay?" My mom asked, she was the only one who called him by his first name. To everyone else he was Jake or some girls that had crushes on him called him Jakey but that was beside the point.
I looked back at him, he nodded. "Yeah," I responded for him. Sure, the smell of puke in this car wasn't pleasant but we only had about ten minutes till we got to the hotel and I thought I could handle it.
I felt sorry for my poor brother. He thought this vacation was going to be fun. He was too naive to realize this vacation was just my mom pitying herself. She just wanted to make it up to us since she had basically been ignoring us the past year, always sobbing in her bedroom.
Jessica took care of us for that period of time. She packed Jake's lunch, signed school permission slips, got us ready for bed, she did all the things a mother would do. Being fourteen I could do most things on my own but she helped me when I needed it.
Jessica tapped my knee, I paused my IPod and looked at her, "You haven't said much Linds," she said softly.
"Just tired," I replied. She nodded and turned back around. I looked back out the window; we passed palm trees and various hotels. I wasn't looking forward to this at all, people thought I was so lucky to be going somewhere but it wasn't like I was going super far, I only lived in Virginia.
"Ten more minutes," my mom said brushing a piece of red hair, the same color as mine, behind her ear.
I nodded, I thought back to when my mom told me about this vacation in the first place, "We're going to Florida," she had said. "Cool," Jake had said happily, Jessica just nodded. I sat in silence and she had looked at me, "This vacation is what you make it Lindsay, you can mope around or you can get out there and have fun!" She said in a happy voice. I ignored her and walked up to my room. Ever since my dad died I felt incomplete, he and I got along well and I missed him. If she wanted to act like everything was normal she could, I didn't really care. So here we were.
Suddenly we pulled into the lot of a Holiday Inn, "We're here!" My mom said in a cheery voice. Jake unbuckled his seatbelt quickly and got out of the car.
"It's warm here," he said.
Jessica scowled, "No shit Sherlock," she said.
My mom looked at her angrily, "Language Jess," she said. Jessica just rolled her eyes and walked to the trunk.
I got out of the car and stretched my legs; the beach was so close I could see it. I wouldn't be swimming in the ocean that was for sure. Water had scared me ever since I was young. My biggest fear was drowning; it scared the hell out of me.
I followed Jessica and grabbed my suitcase, "I want to go swimming!" Jake yelled. "Take me swimming Lindsay?" He questioned.
I nodded, "Later," I replied. He smiled widely and grabbed his small duffel bag, mom closed the trunk, and she looked at us. "You three can just get your swimsuits out of the suitcase and change in the lobby bathroom; I'll stay and get situated."
Jessica nodded and Jake was already digging through his bag. I sighed; going to the beach was the last thing on my mind.
I set my suitcase on the warm asphalt and dug through the bag taking out my navy blue bikini with white polka dots on it. I zipped the bag and walked into the lobby.
I changed quickly and waited for Jessica and Jake. Jessica stood by the mirror pulling her auburn hair into a messy bun. "I'm ready," she said finally.
We walked out of the bathroom and over to Jake, "Finally," he said with a laugh.
Jessica scoffed and led us out of the lobby, we walked across the parking lot and over to the beach.
"I'm going to tan," she announced spreading her towel out on the sand.
"Psh, yeah right," Jake said, you're just going to burn. He was right, we were all pale.
"Come here Jake," I said leading him to an empty area. I took out a can of sunscreen and started spraying him with it, I then sprayed myself. He started walking out to the water, "Be careful and don't go in any farther once the water is up to your chest," I yelled as he wiggled his toe in the water. He turned to me and rolled his eyes.
"I'm going to go for a walk, keep an eye on Jake," I said to Jessica. She nodded and pulled a magazine out of her beach bag.
I started walking and spotted a guy sitting on a rock near the water. His feet were in the water, I looked closely at him. He looked cute from where I was standing. My love life was pretty dry since I broke up with my boyfriend Mark, he was way too clingy.
It wasn't like I was ever going to see this kid again so I approached him confidently. I was almost to him when I tripped over a rock, a smaller rock jabbed into my knee and I had to bite my lip to keep from yelping out in pain.
The kid walked over to me, "Are you okay?" He asked. I looked at him his deep, emerald eyes were shining with concern and his bronze, shaggy hair was blowing in the wind.
"Yeah," I said. He held out his hand and helped me up.
"Your knee is bleeding," he said. I looked down and sure enough blood was dripping from my knee.
"Oh, well that's embarrassing," I said hobbling over to the rock where he was perched just a minute before. He sat next to me.
"You could wash it but salt water would burn," he said.
"Yeah," I said I wasn't planning on going above my knees in that water. "I'm Lindsay," I said quickly.
He smiled a toothy smile, "Brayden," he said sticking his hand.
