I have been having a major problem lately, and I was wondering if anyone out there has gone through this or could help me fix it. Recently I wrote a huge project that was a comedy, but ever since I finished it and have been editing the only thing that I have been able to write is about suicides, or dieing or something dark. This is really getting on my nerves, because I'm not a dark kind of person, and I want to see what I could do with a lighter piece. Can anyone think of some kind of activity that might help get my mind out of this funk, or do I just have to deal with it and let it run it's course? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

First of all, you have to accept that the dark, just like the light, is a beautiful thing. It makes people feel different things than the light does, but we do feel it. You have to know that dark is not bad, just different.

As to get out of the dark writing, write about yourself. You say you're not a dark person: prove it. Write about school your friends, what you like to do, your family, your favorite movie. Write about an outing you have with your best bud. Write about writing. Unload. Vent. Empty yourself and then start filling yourself up again, this time with light.

Believe me, soon you'll want to come back to the shadows for a little break from the sunshine.

I do understand that dark is beautiful, but thank you for the advice. I will try it.

...just because darkness is beautiful does not necessarily mean that it is a good thing to be around. I've written many dark things in the past, and embraced it, and I felt unbelievably suicidal because of it. The light will always be better than the dark. Remember that it's the story of how we are delivered from the darkness that makes the reader really want to keep reading...

sorry to get so philosophical. I just don't like it when I hear people embracing the darkness, because quite honestly, it's not something to embrace.

With that said, wanna write something light? Think of what truly makes you feel good or happy, and try to pursue that. You'll write lighter if you can do that.

Krupp: you're right. You shouldn't embrace darkness, never completely, and yes it can be harmful. Light will always be better, but often times the darkness is what's real.

So yeah, watch out for the bad stuff. Never get too drawn in by the darkness.

But without it, we wouldn't know what light is.
