I've started another story. This one was inspired by a dream (like most of my stories) I had a month ago. Harsh reviews are always welcome. Pick it apart but do enjoy it. Thank-you to everyone who reviewed it. Your comments and tips made it better. Perhaps it sounds better. Perhaps not.
Prologue:
The fountain’s water rippled. The man leaning against the stone fountain started awake as he felt the vibration. He looked blearily around the park and gave a yawn.
“Damn subways,” he muttered, settling down underneath his tattered blanket. His eyes had just closed when the fountain vibrated again. He ignored it and was almost asleep when the water sloshed over the side, soaking him. “What the hell!” Blanket in hands, he jumped to his feet.
His blue eyes widened and his mouth fell open in horror. He took a step backwards, fear ripping through him. “Sweet Jesus! What the f---” he managed to yelp before tripping over his own feet and falling to the ground.
Standing in the fountain stood two devilish looking creatures. Both had long trunk type noses and tentacles growing out of their skulls. Their nails were long and curled and they both had black, flaky skin. Their bright yellow eyes focused on Red and the creature on the right stepped out of the fountain.
Red lay where he fell, fear rooting him to the spot. His mouth hung open and he clutched his blanket tightly, fearing he just might wet himself.
The creature walked towards him on four legs. Its body began to wave and a sickening squelching sound came as the creature began to morph. By the time it reached the man, it had become a duplicate of the man himself.
“Wh-What are you?” the man squealed.
The creature held his hand out in front of him, yellow eyes bright with admiration. “Absolutely fascinating. I did not know I had the talent of shifting,” he snickered. It wasn’t Red’s voice coming from the creature’s new mouth, but a deeper, scratchy voice.
Red crawled backwards from the creature, jumped to his feet and began to run. The thing frowned as he watched the man retreat. Red looked over his shoulder and saw only one creature in the fountain. His ‘duplicate’ was gone. He turned his head back and slid to a stop as he realized his ’duplicate’ was in front of him.
“Are you running away from me?” The creature grabbed him by the throat and held him up in the air. “Bad idea indeed. Especially when I’m so hungry. The jump to here from Argmar is a long, tiresome one.”
“Pl-Please! D-D-Don’t eat me!” the man cried, struggling against the creatures hold.
“Hmm…perhaps you could be some use to us. And if not, then I’ll share you with my brother,” replied the creature, satisfaction on his face.
“Okay, okay. Wh-What d-d-do you want?”
“We need to find two Faeries by the name of Divah. It’s a surname. Do you know of them?”
“Fairies aren’t real!”
“Stupid human! Don’t get on my bad side, or I will eat you.” The creature tightened his grip on Red’s throat until his face turned purple. “Understand?”
“Y-Yes,” he gasped.
The creature dropped him to the ground and put his hands behind his back. “Find the Divah brothers location and we’ll let you live…for now.”
Red held his throat as he nodded. “R-Right. How sh-shall I find you after I found th-their location? And why do you need my help?
“We’ll find you. We’re also new to this world and do not know our way around. That tis why you are going to help us. What is your name little human?”
“They call me Red.”
“Fine. I shall give up your shape, as it is not to my liking. Good night Red and do not dare run away from this duty we have bestowed upon you.” The creature walked away, changing his shape once more. Red jumped to his feet and fled the park.
The other creature slid out of the fountain and crawled towards his brother. He studied the human face and changed into a twin of his brother.
“Has he agreed to aid us, Ashmar?”
“Indeed Warf. He has indeed. Soon the Staff of Grimbow will be ours and all the little Faeries will be gone and we will rule Argmar,” chuckled Ashmar.
Warf rubbed his hands together with excitement. “I can feel the power already…But what of the younger brother? Rumour has it he has mighty powers.”
“We’ll use him as a bargaining chip and then kill him anyways. He’s too powerful to have around…” Ashmar broke off with a laugh that sounded more like a gurgle. “Faeries, hah! Scums of the worlds is the name they should have been called.”
“Barbarians, traitors, thieves, bums, beggars…abominations,” added Warf with a gurgle of his own. “We’ll soon dispose of them and these stinky humans and we’ll be quite happy…and immune.”
“You say it quite well brother.”
