I was chosen; I have not done anything extraordinary, anything that is more than someone else is capable of doing.
The only thing I have done is to be my Lord's servant. I am devoted to Him. Still, it puzzles me, for there are certainly others who are capable of being as loyal and humble as I have tried to be, and there are indeed others who are more than I am. After all, I am only a girl of fifteen. But the messenger who spoke to me said that my Lord was pleased with me.
My Lord has honored me, but also overwhelmed me. I will depend on Him more and more in the coming weeks.
Ah! For now that the village knows, I am an outsider. The people watch and talk about me, some mocking and others scandalized. My betrothed has been very kind to me, obeying the message that was brought to him as I obeyed mine. For indeed, who are we to disobey the Lord?
But, with my Lord's help, I am happy, not taking the things that are being said about me to heart. Even the rumors that I may be stoned cannot penetrate my joy! For I am the Lord's servant, and He has chosen me for a frightening but glorious task: I am to be the mother of His earthly child.
