Who are we fooling? Do we really expect to find ourselves amidst an overflow of monotonous clones fully clad in Ed Hardy? We might as well parade around with an “EXPIRED” stamp across our forehead and breathe the nearly tangible “I do what I want” attitude; an unparalleled oxymoron to say the least.
Now I’m not here to merely spit criticism and unleash a riot of hysteria. I mean, hey, I like a clearance-sale Coach tote as much as the next shop-a-holic; but honestly all shards of independence have ceased to exist as we know it. Every scrap has morphed into a sheer figment of our unprecedented imagination. I don’t know what’s worse: awareness of our conformity along stubbornly silent wavelengths or blind submission. If we possess the mindset to stand apart from this sharply tacked framework, then why aren’t we shouting blatantly across rooftops? This hurricane will stop at nothing to see us all devoured by our own lack of resilience; do not let it wash you ashore. I have known countless individuals who have succumbed early on to the pressures of keeping in line with the crowd; myself being one of them. At least I was fortunate enough to grab hold of the buoy before I drowned helplessly alongside the anchor towards its watery grave.
Maybe it is a bit much to proclaim that we are solemnly living as empty time capsules, awaiting the moment our insignificance will sprout change. One thing is for certain; however, none of us can indisputably state that we know exactly who we are; who we are meant to be. Some of us are so irrevocably lost in our own games of Hopscotch and Follow the Leader to even try to understand. We claim we are solely searching for that one passion, that one person, that one unknown to define us, to figure out what we’re doing here; but if we really wanted to be that shining beacon of hope amongst the others, then why hasn’t anyone stood up? Why hasn’t anyone tried to set the stage for individuality?
I need to know that these people exist. I want to meet the people who search beyond the contours of the status quo; who create their own little world within their minds, yet don’t screech to a stop before letting it explode out of their mouths. Infusing your own twisted observations of nothing that’s really everything into a masterpiece; without a sideways glance to check out the competition, is basically the kind of messiness and creativity that should be pouring out your ears. Drop the dead weight of those morbid shackles twisting your identity into an infinite puzzle. Abstain from the graveyard of exhausted ideas. Your uniqueness is precisely your salvation, so hold fast to your beliefs. Say it with me now, “Be who you are; nothing more, nothing less.”
