I'd recommend any of Danielle Steel's books. They are absolutely heartbreaking. Also, the Drake Sisters series, though I can't remember the author right now.

The Gemma Doyle series by Libba Bray (first one is A Great and Terrible Beauty)

The Mortal Instruments Trilogy by Cassandra Clare (first one is City of Bones. Third is not out yet)
