in my latest story, The Elemental Gem, I start off in the prologue with a old woman and little girl. the little girl is asking her grandma to tell her the story on how she met her husband.
is this cliche and if it is, how do i fix it?
"I love you," she whispered in his ear, before taking his mouth with her own.
Cliches are subjective, like what Rosey said. But you have to remember, whether you like it or not, that you're writing to be read. That is, read by a particular audience. The better you know the type of readers you will attract, the better an idea you are likely to have of whether a certain storyline will be effective enough to provoke a response in them, rather than make them dismiss it as cliche. Ultimately, you yourself have to learn to be a good critic and have a keen eye for what works and what doesn't. Reading around your chosen genre can be very helpful in this respect.
"Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself." William Faulkner.
