Sorry bout the long wait, I had a lot going on this winter break.
Chapter 3-
The unit of 50 or so men started hustling off, Trig sprinting to keep up. One off the group's member's turned around.
"Hey kid"! Trig turned around to see the unit's leader talking to him, a large burly man with red hair and mean eyes.
"Yeah?" Trig said a bit feebly.
"You ever fought 'em before?" he asked.
"What?" Trig asked confusedly.
"The zombies,"
"Oh yeah. No"
"Here's the thing. First off, you already heard this, but I want to make it clear- nothing but head shots. If you hit them in the body, you might as well do it with slingshot. Second, never get close to them. They can only hurt you by biting you.. and if they do, we amputate that limb. They bite you on the body, we shoot you in the head."
"What!?" asked Trig, horrified.
"Yeah. These.. things, have some sort of bacteria that makes them what they are. We don't anything much else, but if you get bit, you get the bacteria. If it's on a limb, you might survive if we make sure the bacteria doesn't travel. But you can't amputate your body." Trig swallowed nervously.
"Don't you have some kind of medicine?" Trig asked.
"Nope. We have some scientists working on one.." The man looked at him hard. "Last I heard, your older brother had some breakthrough down at the colony he's working at."
The man turned and started giving orders to the other people in the unit.
Trig marveled at the scenery as they marched by. Trig had only gone out from the colony a few times, with his mother on picnic, and some field trips, which reminded Trig that he hadn't even told his mother where he was.
"She must be worried sick" thought Trig.
The group approached a small clearing. The big man started speaking.
"I want three of you to keep going north to meet the zombies. Make sure they see you. I want you to make them follow you here. The other half will stay here and prepare. Trig, Noah and Grit, you go. Remember, they're slow, all you need to do is walk fast back to us."
"Yes sir" shouted two of the men.
Trig was caught off guard. "Yes sir!" he yelled, a bit too late.
The men turned to Trig and smiled, who was slowly getting green in the face. "Don't worry" said one of them. "This is the better deal. They have to set up the traps and explosives, all we have to do is walk away from them."
Trig, Grit and Noah started jogging north. Grit had a carbine and was of medium build, with lanky dark brown hair, Noah being the opposite, who was tall and muscular. He carried a bolt action sniper. Trig asked Grit "Hey, you guys both have rifles.. but all I have is a pistol. How am I supposed to hit them from range?"
Grit and Noah looked at each other. "Griff only gave you a pistol?"
"Yeah" Noah and Grit gave each other another look.
"We'll try and hook you up with a back up rifle when we get back."
The group fell into silence. As the group started going farther north, they heard moans carried on the wind.
"That ell be 'em" said Noah. "They probably already know where we are."
The group neared a clearing. Trig jumped over a log slippery with moss, into the clearing, and then he saw them.
A massive crowd of filthy, half naked, and putrid beings slowly shuffled their way to them.
Noah and Grit jumped over the log, Grit tripping and falling on his butt.
"Nothing really prepares you for the sight of them." said Noah.
Trig looked at them harder.
"Why are they so slow"? he asked.
"The disease kills their nerve's. That's why they can be shot without being hindered. But it also deadens them, and makes it difficult for them to walk."
"They're getting closer. Let's head back." said Trig.
They turned around jumping over the log.As they walked back to the clearing, they hear the moans and stench of the zombies carried by the wind.
"I think we're here."
"Yup. Careful, go around, there are traps all over that field."
Trig and co. went around the field. The captain greeted them.
"They coming?"
"Yup, they should be through any minute".
Just then the first of the beasts shambled into the clearing.
The commander picked up his walkie.
"Shoot any that cross into the clearing, York, don't blow the C-4 till I say so."
Suddenly, a shot rang out, the zombie's head blown apart.
Another two walked in.
"Noah!" the commander yelled above the shots.
"How many do you think were there?"
"I'd say about 300" Noah responded.
"Commander, can do you have any extra weaponry I can use?"
He looked at Trig.
"Sure".
They walked back into the forest. A small ammunition's dump lay on the floor.
"Hm.. You're probably not a good shot.. Take the carbine. The battle's so close, you don't need an accurate sniper. This one's good." He handed him an M14.
Suddenly the walkie beeped. "Boss! can I blow!?"
Commander hustled back.
"Holy crap, there a lot!" Some 50 zombies were bearing down.
"If we blow, we have to hustle out, cause we can't hold back another 250. I had hoped they would be more grouped together... Shit! They're getting close." The zombies were so close know, you could see they're eyes, and gaping mouth's.
"Let it blow"! From behind the line of zombies, a fireball erupted.
"What?" The commander shouted. Just then another line of zombies entered the clearing, and first 50 were barely quartered in number.
"I want shot gunners up close. Everybody else, climb a tree and just chuck all your firepower at them."
Noah and Grit ran up to Trig.
"Here, follow us. Commander, what are you going to do?"
"I'm going shotgun crazy".
The commander pulled a massive shotgun strapped on his back. Another 20 or so men did too.
"Follow us Trig." Noah said.
They climbed up a tree where they could survey the battle. Noah and Grit started chucking Molotov Cocktails, and Trig took some potshots with his M14.
"Guys! Commander's in trouble" Trig pointed.
The Commander was backed in a corner, trying to keep the zombies at bay.
"I'm going after him."
"NO! It's to dangerous Trig!"
Trig ignored him and slid down the trunk, grabbing a shotgun that was lying around. He ran towards the Commander, around the edge of the clearing, jumping over fallen bodies. He was nearly there, when! He ran out of ammo. a zombie lunged at him, but he smashed his face with his fist.As he drew his outstretched arm back, a zombie grabbed his arm, and bit him.
"NO!" Trig yelled!
Trig ran up to commander and shot the zombie in the face. The zombies head was blown away, leaving a stump where it should be.
"We gottta move." Trig ran ahead blowing a path open with the shotgun.
After they got away, the commander stopped.
"Trig.."
"Yeah"?
"I've been bit."
"So..?" Trig dreaded where this was going.
"I can't do it on my own". He handed a knife to Trig.
"NO! please don't make me!"
"You wanted to be a man. But being a man means doing tough things. Do it and you'll save my life."
Trig closed his eyes and plunged.
Sorry about the gruesomeness. Thanks for a review in advance.
