Writing is Pain

I decided instead of poetry, I should write out my feelings in story-format. This might work better for me, so here goes (feel free to tear it apart):

I looked at the Home page of the YWS website and scrolled downward.

"It's not here," I mused. "Someone said that they saw it in the featured stories section, but it's not here. Perhaps it doesn't show you your own work?"

Why would it? I doubt it wants you to read over your own work fifty million times and obsess over it like you tend to, Eliza. Grow a spine and get over yourself. So you're not the best writer out there. So you're not the next Shakespeare. Suck it up.

The thought cut through me like a razorblade and I quickly shoved it into the back of my mind. I knew those things, but somehow pointing them out to myself made it painful.

I clicked on the "Recent Literary Submissions" page and scrolled down, trying to see what would catch my eye. I needed to work on my review count.

What, so you can post more things? Your work is crap, Eliza. Give up.

"Shut up," I hissed as I clicked on a title that looked promising.

No, I won't shut up. YOU shut up. Pretending like you know what you're doing; hah! You hypocrite!

Would the headvoice ever leave me alone? I KNEW, goddammit, I KNEW! Why did it tell me these things that were no mystery to me? I knew I was a bad writer, but I also knew that I was nothing without my words. Why did my thoughts torment me so?

I read the person's poem and made my little nitpicks about grammatical errors and word choice and whatnot. All the while, the headvoice was screaming at me to stop; give up and stop pretending that what I said actually meant something, because it didn't and it never would.

I KNOW!!! I wanted to roar. I know! I don't need you or anyone else to tell me that! But what am I, without these words aligning themselves in my brain? What am I without my keyboard? What am I without poetry, without novels?
I am nothing. And that's all I've ever been.

I pictured my inner critic tilt its head to the side and ponder this. At last, it said, Didn't you want to be a zoologist up until a year ago? I know you're hesitant about the whole disection-picking-up-poo-and-looking-at-genitals bit, but you love animals.

But that was the problem. My passion for words outshone my love for animals, like a supernova next to a small comet.

So? You're no good at words.

By now, I was ready to tear my hair out. My headvoice was only repeating itself, and the words stabbed deeper into my heart each time. I knew. Couldn't it see that? I knew.

You can't develop interesting plotlines, and you're all tell, but no show. You're strong with imagery and decent with metaphor and simile, but your poetry has no rhythm, no flow, and you fall through the cracks. Give up. Just. Give. Up.

My lips opened in a silent scream and the light from the computer suddenly became blinding. How could I silence the inner critic?

Simple. Show me that you can write well. Show me that you're confident with your work. It's not enough for your parents, teachers, and friends to tell you. You need to believe it.

How could I believe it if it wasn't true? I'd be deluding myself. But wasn't I doing that already?

Yes. Yes I was. Writing was a blood-sport, and I was paying for it with all the pain I had. Writing was pain, but not writing was agony. And having writ was joy. That is, unless you absolutely abhored your own writing. Then it was like a hot poker twisting around in your stomach.

But that was strength, wasn't? Doing what you had to do, despite how much it hurt. And wasn't that what I was doing?

Yes. And all the pain and anger in the world could not stop me from writing. Because I'd go mad if I didn't.

Hi, Eliza. I liked this. Based on this alone, I'd say you are a good writer! : )

I read the person's poem and made my little nitpicks about grammatical errors and word choice and whatnot.

just my own little nitpick here. I'd take out "the person's". I think it sounds awkward. And "I read the poem" makes just as much sense.

I KNOW!!! I wanted to roar. I know! I don't need you or anyone else to tell me that! But what am I, without these words aligning themselves in my brain? What am I without my keyboard? What am I without poetry, without novels?

I am nothing. And that's all I've ever been.

I thought the italics were a bit confusing, because up until now, you've only used italics for your headvoice speaking, and now you are speaking and it's in italics. Is there another way you could set off your thoughts that's not italics?

I know you're hesitant about the whole disection-picking-up-poo-and-looking-at-genitals bit, but you love animals.

hilarious.

Writing was pain, but not writing was agony.

I love the first clause. That's exactly the same way I feel about my writing. You love what you write too much and it makes you sick. The second clause doesn't make sense. Do you have a typo?

But that was strength, wasn't?

Don't you need an "it" at the end of the sentence?

Anyway, very well-expressed feelings. I hope you can get over your inner critic! Hope to read some more!

I absolutely loved this piece! All of the emotion was so strongly shown here, and I found that I can relate very well. I'm sure that everyone here has experienced that feeling at least once, and I love the way you wrote it. You used literary devices excellently, and I wish I could write like this. Oh well. Just one tiny detail that might or might not be a typo.

And having writ was joy.

Should that be 'having written'? I'm not sure on the exact meaning of 'writ' but it is something like summonings.
There once was a cat.
He wasn’t particularly fat.
Fuzzy was his favorite mat.
And really, that was that.

Oh, but did you really think so?
Keep reading, it’s just the start of the show!
And as for how far this tale will go…
Well, even the cat doesn’t know.

Okay, so there's issues on the word "writ". It's an archaic word meaning a piece of writing, sort of like a text, but it's also a past participle of write, which is how I used it. I guess "written" would make more sense now that I think about it... Sorry for the confusion.

nixonblitzen ~ Yes, there is supposed to be an "it" at the end of that sentence. *Chastises herself for the typo*

Oh my goodness! This is absolutely wonderful! I can relate to this so much it's not even funny! I would say you are a good writer just from reading this. But I have read some of your other work and they're all great!

The inner editor in me always tells me the same things. Oh, it's not good enough. Oh, this writing sucks! This really makes me feel better! Thanks!

I can definitely feel your pain in this short story. The inner editor is sooo evil!! =] I love the strong feeling in here.

In some parts, your writing made me feel so helpless. Like my writing actually does suck and should all be thrown away. I think this was because you used so much emotion and great imagery, that I could really feel bad. =] But then you gave us "crappy" writers hope. I loved the last lines in this story. So inspiring!!

Yes. And all the pain and anger in the world could not stop me from writing. Because I'd go mad if I didn't.

Exactly! Couldn't have said it better myself!

Us writers need to have hope and that is what you show us. I love all your writing and I hope your inner editor will shut up, too. =]

Wow! This was really good. I haven't read your poetry, but this is an excellent piece of writing

I think you need to capitalize page as well.

Funny. ^_^

abhored

The word is "abhorred". Two r's. Weird, huh?

All in all this was very good! You're writing is very clever and funny. I'd definetly like to see more of your work. You should be an essayist or something. XD

Sorry this wasn't very helpful, but I saw no errors!

Yup yup yup, I feel your pain. I actually just wrote my own drivel about fighting with my "headvoice". (Speaking of which, that has got to be the best name for that annoying little thing I have ever see. Headvoice... I'm seriously going to start using that.) Yours just sounds so much more awful though. *hugs* We're all here for you.

I have to agree with nixonblitzen about the italics. You use them well, but there is that one instance where it is your thoughts that are italicized, thus breaking the pattern of their only being used for the headvoice. I think you could take that paragraph out of italics and it would be fine. After all, the rest of the story has quite of a bit of your inner thoughts without italics.

Writing was a blood-sport, and I was paying for it with all the pain I had.

Very nice.

I know you're hesitant about the whole disection-picking-up-poo-and-looking-at-genitals bit, but you love animals.

*snortgiggle* Omigosh, I nearly wet my pants reading this. The whole tone of the piece was so serious and I was just feeling for you and wanted to hug that headvoice really tightly around the neck with my hands... and then you drop that bomb. Seriously, it cracked me up.

Very, very nice piece. I loved the raw feeling to it. Even if I wasn't a writer, I'd feel your pain here. And yet you persevere. Pure win.

*thumbs up* Keep on kickin' behind, okay?

Wow! Great! Your imagery is really strong, although I have to say that the dialogue doesn't support it. Maybe it's because there's too much of it, but I'm not getting the strength that your imagery provides.

In the first paragraph, the speech of the headvoice is now not italicised and you've written it so it wouldn't be, and then in the second paragraph your speech is now italicised. This is very confusing and maybe there is a way to distinguish between the two?

That is, unless you absolutely abhored your own writing.

Ehm, the word is "abhorred".

But that was strength, wasn't?

Okay, I know you've already pointed out that you noticed this, but I just want to acknowledge that I saw it. You already know there should be an "it", so that's fine.

Overall, a really good piece of non fiction! Great work!
Does anyone else smell books when they read them?

Hey best friend. Now I can nitpick your work even further. Mwuhahaha! Ahem, anyway, I'm not sure if my advice and criticism is even relevant in the wonderful world of YWS, but one thing.

screaming at me to stop; give up and stop pretending

I thought that the stop, stop thing got a little redundant and awkward sounding. I might rephrase it as something like: screaming at me to give and stop pretending, or vice versa. Anyway, your the future writer/poetic one in the group, so your decision. Also, as a best friend who cares, um, why so dark?
So it goes.

Em ~ 'Tis so dark because, well, that is writing. Try having words claw their ways through your veins and down to your fingertips. It hurts.
And I was being an emotional prick the day I wrote this, so whatever. And don't get all psycho-babble on me. I know my mentasl health is not good, and I have reasons. xD
Anyways, thanks for the teeny little nitpick, Em. :D

This is a very mature and well thought up piece of writing for such a young person.

However I would say that more often than not when writing of an honest and personal emotion, it is best to be more simple and honest in your writing. I have often found that those who can express what they feel without using a dramatic simile are able to express themselves far more powerfully. That's an entrierly personal look on literature though and I hope you don't take that comment to be an insult of any sort!

Ah, I've definitely had this silent conversation before. And yes, I think most of us here at Young Writers Society write to stay sane. I know I have nothing without my words.

I know my characters are as dear to me as the friends I have in the real world. I know that the little voice in my head telling me I'm a load of crap doesn't know what it is to write. Because the majority of writing is crap. You write, write, write - all immature or puffed-up or in some way inferior to someone else's - and then you write, write, write until one day - it's perfect. And by the end of it, you have begun to appreciate crap. :)

Loved this. Your feelings came out of the computer screen and showed me that I'm not the only one here that fights a constant battle with the words I love. :)

Hi Explosive_Pen (or Eliza, you choose), I really enjoyed your writing. It's very mature of yours and i know many of us (YWS writers) feel the same (I, particularly do, but that's me...).
Is writing, hard to you or can't you express by words as well as you wanted to be?
I have an advice for you (don't now if you want, but i will say it anyway) :
Don't get obsessed by words, write what you feel because when you write what you feel, you are writing with your heart. That's the most important thing. Don't care if people don't like it or rip it down(only if you want to be a writer with good reviews and gold stars on YWS, in that case, you can polish you work...), YOU like it! That's amazing, when you write something that you love!
In this case, you did it, that's why i love it so much!

Enough with the sad-lame- irritating-mushy-duchy-conversation. Love your work!

Keep writing!

P.S-If it hurts so much that you can't handle it, try some pain killers, may help! :D

Very interesting, very original. When I read the first few lines I thought this wasn't going to be very good, but you really pulled it off. Just a little bit of revising and it will be a very nice piece of work.

Hi twin! So, 'pparently I never read this...**gasp** A piece of yours that you haven't bugged me to read yet!?!?! I didn't know that was possible!! 'Kay, so sarcastic/mean/best friend moment is over...:P
Nitpicks!
I pictured my inner critic tilt its head to the side and ponder this. At last, it said, Didn't you want to be a zoologist up until a year ago? I know you're hesitant about the whole disection-picking-up-poo-and-looking-at-genitals bit, but you love animals.

It's spelled as dissection...Tsk, tsk!
Yes. And all the pain and anger in the world could not stop me from writing. Because I'd go mad if I didn't.

I don't get this at all...If you're saying that nothing could stop you from writing, then shouldn't you say that you'd go mad if you did?? It's contradictary when you say that you can't stop because you'd die if you didn't...Or, maybe, it's just me being dumb...feel free to ignore me! :D
Anywayz, done with the nitpicks! Good job on this twin! And, pshh, you ARE a good writer!!...It's a bit too dark for my taste but y'know...Gold star for you...as usual..............
