Elementary School, Fourth Grade, Year 2002:

The recess bell rang loudly in my ears. I hated that stupid bell. It was way too close to my seat and always scared me and hurt my ears. But I also loved it because it meant that Ms. Johnson would stop droning on about the stupid multiplication tables. They were giving me a headache. And because it meant it was my Taine time. We would always have jumping contests off the swings. It was the best time of the day.

Everyone was already on their feet rushing outside. We had to be quick to get to the swings on time. There were only five of them and they filled up quickly.

In my rush, I tripped over the rug that our teacher told us stories on. I fell right on my knees, scraping them against the cold hard wooden floor. Everyone giggled, but Erin Streets laughed the loudest. She walked right by me on her way outside so she could make fun of me.

"That was gross. You're so fat!" she exclaimed, before covering her mouth with her thin hand and giggling.

Tears ran down my face in a constant stream. I was so embarrassed. I hoped Taine hadn't seen that.

But of course he had, because he wouldn't leave me behind. He was my best friend ever. He held out a hand to me without saying anything about what Erin had said.

"We don't have to play on the swings today..." he said as we continued outside. I wiped my eyes roughly and sniffled to get rid of the boogers that might have dripped out of my nose otherwise.

Taine walked over to the four square court, and I followed faithfully. Except I didn't like four square. I always got hit in the face. That's why I was so round... I didn't do exercise much because I wasn't very coordinated. I would play anyway, though.

So we got in line together, him in front of me. He looked forward, pretending to watch the game, but I noticed his eyes didn't follow the ball much. I wondered what he was thinking about as he turned around swiftly.

"Hey, Jemma. I just wanted to say I kind of like you. You know... like like," he blurted with red cheeks. I smiled huge.

"I like like you too, Tainster." I used my nick name for him because I was embarrassed. He smiled and then turned back around to watch the game again, this time with a smile and eyes following the ball.

I couldn't help but feel disappointed, though. I mean, maybe I'd expected something to happen after he said that, but no. He just watched the game, happy as a clam.

I pouted and crossed my arms.

I finally got up enough courage, and I poked his shoulder hard. He turned around a smug smile on his face.

"Yeah?" he asked.

"Well, what now?" I demanded.

"What do you mean?" he asked, pushing his glasses up his nose.

"I dunno... shouldn't something happen now?" I asked. He shrugged and looked like he was about to say something but then Tyler Walsh got out, and it was Taine's turn to play.

Elementary School, Fourth Grade, Year 2002:Taine's POV

Mr.Johnson was talking to the class, but I could not pay attention to what he was saying. There were two thoughts that crossed my mind; recess and Jemma. Since I meet Jemma in first grade I thought she was cute. Everyone said she was fat, but I did not. She was my best friend and my big secret crush. I blushed at the thought of telling her. As the days went on, it became harder and harder for me not to tell her! Bring.

The loud bell recess bell broke me out of my train of thought. As the other members of my class ran outside, I went to the otherside of the room to meet up with Jemma. She was walking out the door when she tripped over the story time rug. I hope she's alright.

Slowly I walked over to where Jemma had fallen. Erin Streets walked by her and said, "That was gross. You're so fat!"

No Erin, your evilness gross and fat! Tears were cascading down Jemma's face and it hurt me. Helping her up, I did not say a word, knowing she was embarassed by what had happened.

"We don't have to play on the swings today..." I said, as I headed for the four-square line.

Jemma wiped her face and followed behind me. She doesn't like to play sports; afraid she might get hurt. Though she stood behind me in line and waited to play.

This is my chance, I thought. I can ask her now and tell her how I feel.

Swiftly, I turned on my heels and looked at her.

"Hey, Jemma. I just wanted to say I kind of like you. You know... like like," came out of my mouth.

Realizing what I just admitted, I began to blush madly. Seeing the smile on her face made my confidence explode. Maybe she like likes me!

"I like like you too, Tainster." she replied, using my nickname.

Jem was the only person I let call me that and I loved it. She liked me back and that was all I needed to know. Turning back to the game, I watched the ball with a huge smile plastered on my face. Nothing could go wrong. Suddenly I felt a forceful poke on my back. With a smug smile I turned around to look at Jemma.

"Yeah?" I asked her.

"Well, what now?" she demanded.

"What do you mean?" I asked, pushing my glasses up my nose.

"I dunno... shouldn't something happen now?" she asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. Are we to young to be boyfriend and girlfriend? As I was about to say something, Tyler Walsh got out and it was my turn.

Much to my dismay, I stepped away from Jemma into the game, wanting to say to her, "Hey let's be boyfriend and girlfriend!"

I hope I get out soon, so I can talk to Jemma.

Elementary School, Fourth Grade, Year 2002: Jemma

I waited at the side of the four square court waiting for Taine to get out. I expected it wouldn't take long, I mean he wasn't really really good at sports or anything.

But the stupid ball wouldn't bounce into his square! It did a couple times, but they were easy ones, so he could easily hit it into someone else's square.

The bell rang again, and I mad an angry face, crossing my arms. Stupid bell. I hated that bell.

After we finished English where we learned abour verbs and nouns, I got a peice of paper handed to me. I unfolded it and it said: To Jem, From Taine. I unfolded it one more time and there was a picture of a girl and a boy with a heart. I grinned, but hid it under my desk. I didn't want anyone to see it. Under the big heart it said "Wanna be my girlfriend?"

I turned to him, and tried to get his attention, but he was listening intently to the teacher. I took out a new peice of paper and wrote "Yep" before crunching it up into a ball and throwing it at him. I turned back around, trying to look innocent with a guilty grin on my face.
