The Monster
Her rhythm is steady
Breathe in, breathe out
Unmoving on pillows
Her serenity, no doubt
From a window creaking
A monster slinks in
Sparkle in his eye
Resolution set in chin
A flash of bright light
The fiend now is gone
A lump of cold gray
Crumpled down on the lawn
A twitch, then he dashes
Refusing defeat
He creeps up the stairs
Footsteps’ uneven beat
He pauses at the door
Then enters with care
Sidesteps a flash
But it doesn’t stop there
Another white glow
He misses just barely
Lunges at the sleeper
Menacing scarily
But a final glowing shield
Brighter than the rest
Puts fear in his eyes
Terror lumps in his chest
He twitches, then vanishes
Never again to return
To bother the sleeping girl
Or guardian angelic fury to learn
