chapter 1: Wrong place, wrong time

I wrote this in one day, although I thought a little before that. I sort of imagined it all. So from 1 worst to 5 best, what do you give it?

He was surrounded. Enemies in front and behind were closing in on him. From the back they were chasing him, and in front sat some with their guns poised. Boom! A bomb exploded behind him. Then shots whizzed past from the front. He glanced back at the explosion, and then as he turned forward again, a bullet zoomed in straight at him- Chireep! Chireep!
Kyle awoke from his sleep to the chirping of his parakeet. Sunlight was streaming in through his windows. He knew instantly that he was late. He got ready quickly and skipped breakfast, which was rare for him. He had just come out of the shower before it was time for him to leave for school.
He biked there quickly, and arrived with sweat running down his neck. He was in a hurry because his harsh 9th grade teacher, Mrs. Hendricks was quite strict on time. As he hurried down the hallway, he thought, “I’ll be just in time.” But as he rounded the last corner, he was shoved down maliciously from behind. His books were scattered across the floor. He looked up just in time to watch the guy do the same thing to a girl down the hall, then rush into the classroom. It was no other than the teacher’s son Paul, and the he and the girl were both in Kyle’s class. As Kyle and the other girl picked up their books, the final bell rang. They walked to the door, annoyed, and stepped into the room. Mrs. Hendricks glared at them briefly. Then, in her whiny, dragging voice, she announced, “Kyle, Melissa, you were three seconds late. For that you will empty every trash can in the school.”
As they walked to their seats, Paul looked up and said sarcastically,
“Aw, that’s too bad. Accidents happen.”
“What goes around comes around, teacher’s pet” retorted Melissa.
Kyle thought to himself, “A pet mosquito at that.” Then he sighed, and muttered, “Unfortunately that won’t make our job any easier.” Even he didn’t know yet how much truth there was in that statement.
Finally school finished, and Kyle began his chore. He grabbed as many trash bags as he could easily carry. He met Melissa in the hallway as they took their first load.
“Now I’ll be late for football practice” said Kyle, thinking out loud.
“And I was supposed to be babysitting” said Melissa, drearily. “Instead my brother is doing it for me right now.” Kyle opened the door for her and they stepped outside. The beautiful morning had now transformed to a dull, silent afternoon. The sky was overcast, the air seemed stale, and not a sound could be heard, except a car parking on the other side of the building. Kyle found this odd, as normally on cloudy days the birds were cheerfully singing. They went up to the garbage bin and tossed in their bags. But as they did so they heard some people talking beside the nearest corner of the building, on the other side of the bin. Kyle peeked around, and beckoned to Melissa to stop.
“Look over there” he whispered. Melissa looked, and saw two men having a vigorous conversation, but not loud enough for them to hear. “I wonder why he’s dressed like that” he said. The one on the left had on a cowboy hat, sunglasses, and a long, tan raincoat. The other was holding a brown briefcase. Suddenly the two men paused, and the strange-looking one was glaring intently at the other, as if waiting for an answer. Kyle noticed that his hand went to his side coat pocket. In response the other guy looked disgusted and shook his head in frustration, looking at the ground. Then out of the pocket came a hand clutching a large knife, and it was thrust into the briefcase guy’s stomach. Kyle and Melissa ducked, and then stared at each other in shock. There was a short tunnel which ran alongside the school, which they had all enjoyed playing in as kids. It ran diagonally beside the building, with just one 90 degree turn. It was plenty big enough to get into, but most would have to crouch. The entrance was in a ditch next to the garbage bin. Kyle looked around desperately, but it was the only chance of not being seen.
“Into the tunnel!” he said in a harsh whisper. Kyle peeked back at the killer and saw that he was putting the body into a garbage bag. They slid down to the tunnel opening. They tiptoed inside, looking behind them every few seconds. They stopped.
“Surely no one can see us here, can they?” asked Kyle.
“No” answered Melissa.
They waited breathless for thirty seconds. There was a muffled “thump-thump, thump-thump” overhead. Kyle felt certain they were footsteps. They got louder and louder, then gradually quieter again.
“He just passed overhead” said Melissa, trying in vain to hide her fear.
Then they heard something crash into the garbage bin. They shuddered at the thought of what it was. Suddenly the footsteps were unmistakable, as they echoed through the tunnel. The killer’s shadow appeared at the entrance, followed by his own body. He looked into the tunnel, and his gaze appeared to be fixed on them. He walked inside a little. Kyle prayed that he would not come too far in. To Kyle’s relief he stopped; then he looked around nervously. He opened the stolen brown briefcase that he had carried with him into the tunnel, and pulled out a laptop. He powered it on, and now they could see his face more clearly with the light from the screen. Periodically he would click, read something for a while, and click some more, for about ten minutes Kyle guessed. He then took out of his pocket a flash drive, and plugged it into the computer. He clicked a couple times, and then waited anxiously, as if downloading something. After about what seemed to Kyle like a minute, he took his flash drive out and dropped it into his pocket again. Finally he picked up the laptop and ran out. They heard a repeated “crash-smack-pop, crash-pop” coming from outside.
“He’s destroying the laptop” commented Kyle.
He reappeared at the entrance. He was watching outside anxiously, and looking at his watch now and then. Suddenly they heard a car coming in. The killer retreated a couple steps. After waiting a few seconds he carefully peered out, and bolted off. They heard the garbage bin’s door creak as if being opened. Then they heard a trunk gently slam shut, followed by the car’s engine, and the noise faded away to the street.
Then Melissa found her voice and whispered, “Is it safe now?”
“I’m not sure, but let’s find out” answered Kyle, with confidence that surprised even him. He went over to the briefcase. He opened it slowly, and found it filled with letters.
“Shouldn’t we escape now?” asked Melissa, coming behind him.
“Maybe, but if we do, we’ll always wonder what was in this briefcase. Besides, we should make sure he’s gone.” Deep on the inside he wanted to get out too, but something wouldn’t let him go. He searched though the briefcase. “There are several letters in here, and they seem to all be addressed to a Mr. Callahan and written by a Mr. Osloden, President of the Capitol Terror Project. This one reads:

‘Dear Mr. Callahan:

The Building will blow up at precisely 7:00 pm ET, the same time as we crash the White House, so there is no need to worry about it alerting the government prematurely. The sum I am willing to give you for this information is .5 million U.S. dollars. But we must discuss the rest of this in person. Meet me at point C at 3:30 pm CT on 10/10/08. I choose this place because I am afraid and have good evidence that I have been tracked, and this spot is highly suitable for an unnoticed meeting.

Signed,
Mr. Osloden, President of the Capitol Terror Project'"

“That’s today, 10/10/08!” exclaimed Melissa.
“And this is point C, and 3:30 pm central time was when we first saw them” Kyle finished gravely. Then they heard the dreaded and now familiar quiet humming of the murderer’s car.
“Quickly, back further into the tunnel!” hissed Melissa. “It’s a good thing we didn’t leave, or else we might have been caught.”
They backed off deeper into the tunnel, right after Kyle attempted to fix the briefcase into the position it had been. They saw the cowboy hat on the head of the body with the long coat loom at the entrance. He slipped in, grabbed the briefcase, examined it, and hurried outside. The car was heard driving off.
“Hopefully that was the last time” heaved Melissa, catching her breath. “And if we go quickly now, it won’t matter.”
Kyle couldn’t resist. It was about time they made a run for it, he thought. “Yeah let’s go, before anything else happens.”
They ran to the entrance, and then peered out cautiously.
“It’s not going to make a difference if we sneak or run, as far as someone seeing us” concluded Kyle. “Let’s run for it!”
Melissa nodded in consent. When Kyle straightened up he realized how much his back had been aching, but none of them cared. They climbed out, and started sprinting off.
But suddenly, out of the woods beside them, there came a “psst.” Kyle and Melissa froze.

Intense! Are you Kyle? That English teacher sounds strict. I wonder why Mr.Callahan only got the note? I hope you explain how the killer (that just appeared out of nowhere) is connected to the White House and school attack plot. Usually, I write that first paragraph to give a clue to how the story ends or connects to the solution of the plot: I hope there was some reason for it. Where were they exactly when they started; on the football field, hallway, cafeteria, where? Nice start, love to see how it ends.

Thanks for reading it! I just realized that my poll is missing a 5. Oh well, no one will give it that anyways :piratedthread: . Well, in my imagination, I was Kyle (not my name). But for the sake of the story I have changed the character a bit. Everything I wrote is there for a reason, important or no. You will see when I finish :smt045 if you look closely. I know, I have a tendency to jam a lot of info into one spot. In my imagination they were outside, next to the parking lot. There really is a tunnel like that at my school. Me and my friends found a big knife there once!
The reason for this chapter was kind of to introduce the rest. I have written the next one, and I will post it when I finish editing it. It's purpose is to connect the others. But the best part will come at the very end, the main reason for my writing this book.

Pretty good! A few comments though:

The story feels a little rushed, like you were really hurrying and under pressure to get it done fast.
Also, the teacher is a little too strict, don't you think? Sort of unrealistic...
Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious.

Thanks! Yeah I've realized I wrote like that. I will try to improve in the future. As far as the teacher, I just like being a little comical sometimes. That's why it's called fiction.. :pirate1: Thanks again for the review!

Good job it is very interesting. I do have to agree a little with moonglowe though on the next chapter you need to take your time, I mean it's not like there is going to be a due date for it or anything. Keep on writing, can't wait to read more bye!

Ok thanks. I took your advice on the next chapter. see how you like it. I appreciate all your reviews!

I LOVE THIS STORY!!! You got something going here, kiddo! A nice government thriller, sounds like. Of course, i am a sucker for action/adventure fiction of any kind, so of course i lke it. :D When you said there was a tunnel outside your school, did you mean FCA? We should go over there sometime. Who knows; we might uncover a plot to assassinate the President! Is there gonna be a romance between Kyle and Melissa? If there is, can I be her?
You must be swift as the coursing river,
With all the force of a great typhoon,
With all the strength of a raging fire,
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon.

Yeah that's the one at FCA.
HaHA I hadn't planned on romance in it, but if you want it I will let you put it in  . I'll let you in on a secret: it was you in my imagination! I try to give her some of your personality. But remember it's all fiction.

Yes you should definitely put some romance in it, love always makes a story a tad more interesting. If you're going to make Melissa like me (very sweet of you! :smt055 ) you better make her a damsel in distress who laughs at all the wrong times. :smt009 Is Kyle gonna actually fight some guys? Ohmygosh that would be flippin awesome! :smt027

Yeah remember I can't do romance, so you will have to write the script for that, and I would welcome it. It's funny as soon as I posted this book I knew when you read it you would ask if there was romance! I am about to add a third chapter I just finished. It is very interesting.

Hi - great story idea, but (I know you've read this countless times now) it went too quickly. When I read stories, I can, uhm, how can I explain this... feel its texture, see its colours. This story reminded me of layers of lace - there was substance, but it too flimsy and delicate for me to get lost in; it almost felt as though the narrator was skimming over the surface of deep water (the deep water being the story). The story is there - I can see it. But you sort of 'touched' on everything; you didn't delve beneath the surface and allow us to explore.

It's not all bad though, dude. Although it was rushed, you could sense the 'action-adventure' pace growing as the story went on and you began growing more confident. Towards the end, I began seeing the pictures and scenes in my head (as this is how I tend to read; with the words painting movies in my head): I even started forgetting that I'm sat in front of laptop. *laughs*

I'm not going to do a 'picky' review (i.e. I'm not going to go through your work and start pulling out everything that needs a tidy-up) because you're only starting, and as you read and review other people's work, you'll slowly morph their maturity and your own creativity into something special... that I can tear apart and get perfectionistic about! *mwahahaha*

Quick tip: If you read a story that you think is Oscar worthy, scroll down and read the reviews, too. Not just the ones that say "wow, I loved it"; I mean the proper ones, the ones that are almost as long as the story itself (or in my case, sometimes longer). Believe me - it's helped me to learn just as much as it will help you. ^_^

PM me when you write something new, OK? I'm currently on a reading spree so I can't stay here for long. I'll go sign your guestbook, though, so you (may possibly) remember me when you next feel the urge to post something. Ja~!
