It is the year 2139, and the world’s first -and last- nuclear war has just ended. The cities of North America and Russia are destroyed, their land rendered unfertile and believed to be uninhabited, except for nomadic tribes wandering the prairies. Radiation has contaminated the beautiful old cities in Europe and the Europeans are dying of disease-and nothing but mass evacuation can stop it.
The governments of Asia and Europe are working hard trying to transport the people of their lands to Africa, South America and Australasia.. The airports are places of chaos, with people rioting to be the first on helicopters to the New World.
But in the Australian bush is a new establishment, built for this purpose. New Geneva is a group of grey blocks hidden behind barbed wire amongst the trees. With the great scientists dead or dying, and the average needed to take care of people on the ground, it is the young, new minds of the world who are taken here to work to create fertilizers, fuel and medicine.
New Geneva is international, but with the universal language introduced thirty years previously, all can communicate. The only difference is culture.
But there are cathedrals to be restored, epidemics to stop, famines to halt and civilizations to save. And only you to do it.
I’d get a move on.

Rules:

-You must be a scientist in New Geneva. You can have supervisors and other staff, but you can’t play as them, they’re just there to fill in the gaps.
-Age must be between twelve and nineteen.
-You can’t be from the US, Canada or Russia -your parents can be, but you can’t have lived there. Lower Asia (not too far north), Africa, Europe, South America are fine. Please be original!
- If the character above yours while making profiles is a girl, your first one has to be a boy and vice versa.
-You can have up to two playing characters.
-No god-modding.
-No sex stuff please.
-Please don’t go straight to the romance. Make it interesting apart from that.
-New Geneva works like a school. Meals are communal. Lab work in the morning and early afternoon, physical activity in the later afternoon, dinner and leisure at night to read up in the library etc.
-You cannot leave the compound.
-Dormitories of four or six people.
-Put some thought into your posts. Proper paragraphs. Come up with a new way for the story to go, don’t just agree with the person above you.
-Try to involve other characters.
-Remember, your character is pretty much a geek. Sure, write about their families, but don’t make it too tragic and don’t make their lives before the war tragic.
-All the technology and stuff-just use the technology from today, don’t worry about making up new types of stuff.
-The Internet is dead. Just thought I’d mention that. So are the phones. So the only way you can communicate with the outside world is via letter.
-As far as science goes, as long as it sounds impressive, it’s good enough for me!
-Make your profile like this:

Name: full name please.
Age:
Speciality: what science (biology, chemistry, physics, maths etc.) are you good at.
Appearance: description please, not just a picture.
Nationality:
Personality:
History:
Dorm: how many people are in it, are any of them playing characters…

I’ll be directing the whole shebang, except for when I disappear for long periods of time and leave you kids to take care of yourselves!

Name: Ben Lindsay

Age: 16

Speciality: Biology - Genetics.

Appearance: Tall and very skinny, almost constantly maintaining the fact that he 'really doesn't need to eat that much'. He has slightly curly brown hair, dark brown eyes, and relatively fair skin.

Nationality: Australian.

Personality: He's somewhat reserved, often spending hours at work, absorbed in his own little world. He can be sociable enough when in the company of people he knows relatively well, but otherwise, he comes across as either shy or very stand-offish.

History: His parents were both Australians, and both opposed to war and in particular nuclear weapons since before the last nuclear war had begun. His father was a banker on a business trip to Chicago when it was nuked, and his mother, a university lecturer, became clinically depressed afterward, leaving Ben in a kind of limbo. This, more than even the death of his father and his mother's mental illness, was what pushed him into his self-isolation, which, when coupled with his strong work ethic and level of intelligence, made him a prime candidate for the New Geneva program.

Nice profile Billy. Firestalker, you just had to follow the guidelines! But sure... I'm going to have two characters, hopefully.

Name: Amelia Jenkins
Age: 17
Speciality: Chemistry
Appearance: good looking. Mid-length gold-blonde hair and contrasting deep brown eyes. Tall, slim, well formed. Hands always perfectly manicured.
Nationality: English
Personality: she's quite vain, she gets up early every morning to do her hair and make-up (even though cosmetics are very expensive these days) and she is always impeccably dressed. She can be a bit of a snob and tends to go off on tangents about herself. But none of it is intentional. At heart, she is kind, and she looks after her friends. She is a team player, and is always prepared to let the credit go to someone else if it means more to them.
History: Amelia comes from a rich family, and had lived until recently in a big old house in the English countryside. She was educated in a public (that means private, confusing right?) boarding school, and was sure to be a prefect, until the evacuations started. Her parents she knows are safe in Melbourne-although her little sister has been affected by the spreading radiation. This only adds to her determination to help New Geneva find new cures. She is fiercely clever with her chemicals, only she tends to put it down to "I simply had good teachers."
Dorm: six people.

And I'll post my other profile (a boy) later.

Name: Azrael Ballow Linx

Age: 17

Speciality: Physics

Appearance: Red eyes, emo-cut black hair, ghostly plale incredibly tall and dangerously skinny. Always has a dangerous glint in his eyes.

Nationality: Half Fillipino and Half Dutch

Personality: Happy, and very charming, but with dangerous looking eyes people tend to stay away from him. He is easily lovable, gullible and not very bright in common sense and logic, but is a whizz in physics. He loves to laugh and smile. He is really just helping this because he thinks it'll help people smile. He is very easy to read and very naive about the world, because he tends to not understand a lot that usually shape a perosn into who they are. When he gets caught up in physics his eyes tend to glaze over and become black.

History: Normal, really nothing tragic except his favourite cat died last month, which he took to heart and is a little bit gloomy whenever something related to it comes up, and a lot of things are related to it, trust me ^^

Dorm: Depends . . . 6?

Name: Louis Gwenvir Eveque (in international language is pronounced "LOO-iss GWEN-vir EVER-kee)

Age: 16

Speciality: Generic Biology, but specialises in related areas of chemistry. Overall has become focussed on radiation treatment and possible preventative measures. ( is, naturally, a bit of a prodigy)

Appearance: Dark skinned, wears his blackhair in thin braids that are tied into a ponytail. Hazel coloured eyes. 5'11", medium-thin build, but quite fit due to his Martial Arts training.

Nationality: Haitian

Personality: Is torn between the desire to remain in the shadows and not attract too much attention, and a genuine desire to help a world he perceives as sick. Because of his alienating upbringing, he has a slightly introverted nature, and a disregard for material things. Personal experience has shown him that the only thing he can be sure of waking up with tommorow is himself, and so that is what he focusses on improving. Is wary of becoming attached to others, as has a history of abandonement; or being sent to far off countries with no choice in the matter.

History: Named by a Nun with a deep interest in the Classics. Brought up in a strict Catholic Orphanage, but was emigrated to a French boarding school when his intelligence came to the attention of a passing School Board-Member. While at the establishment, he showed some interest in a study of classical literature, but otherwise focussed his studies completely on the sciences and Mixed Martial Arts. The physical training was initially worrying for his tutors, but it seemed to vent pent up emotion and allow for physical exersise outside of his self-imposed strict study regime, so it was allowed.Brought to New Geneva in first round of evacuations. No knowledge of parents.

*Sounds interesting :D*

Name: Seven Folestion

Age: 17

Speciality: Botany, things related to the earth

Appearance: Soft subtle features around the face, all her movements are carefully chosen, even when quick. Light green eyes with faint streaks of an orangish-red within, peach colored face and a mess of brunette and slight black hair that falls a little past her shoulders.

Nationality: English

Personality: Quiet and takes in all her surroundings, very sensitive when it comes to plants and takes careful measurements to protect it--even a little more than she protects herself. Seven is very pro-eco and will not stand to see people littler or even spit on the ground. There's a quick, sure fire way to get on her bad side, disrespect the earth in any way. She's usually incredibly calm, but has a seriously bad temper at times.

History: Lived, basically, in a green house with her mother and father along with an older brother, that, for some reason, got lost. Seven suspected that of her parents doing since he never liked to help around and mostly crushed all the plants, which angered all of them. But mostly her parents. Seven left home a couple months just before the end of the nuclear war--even though it wasn't quite over--and had lived on her own since then. Now, she's a scientist.

And my next profile:

Name: Matheos Grandos

Age: 15

Speciality: Biology, especially good with pharmaceutical aspects.

Appearance: Caucasion but very dark, black hair and soulful brown eyes. Quite small with delicate features for a boy.

Nationality: Argentinian.

Personality: He's quite arrogant about his work, very hot-tempered and empassioned, like many of his countrymen. He's flirtatious and melodramatic.

History: he attended a Catholic school in Argentina. His parents are still at home, with his four younger siblings.

Dorm: 4.

Any more takers?

Name: Mona Tanglerin (pronounced Mow-nuh Tohn-glehr-ohn)

Age: 16

Specialty: Environmental and Biological Sciences

Appearance: Very slender, creamy beige skin, glossy and wavy auburn hair, light freckles, lots of ear piercings (it's a cultural thing), average height, deep sparkling aqua eyes

Nationality: French, Creole (Guadaloupe), and Indonesian

Personality: Very thoughtful and inquisitive, bubbly/cheerful/peppy, always has something funny to say or something to lighten the mood in dark times, kind of like a hyper puppy

History: Mona moved to Australia to escape the crisis in Europe and the extreme heat in Southern France, but her parents refused to leave her sister, who was sick with an unidentified plague, and it would be much too risky for her to come, so Mona ventured off on her own, finally finding a place with New Geneva.

Dorm: 4-person with Ben, Louis, and Seven

Name: Ilario Lucio Esposito

Age: 17

Speciality: Medicine. Ilario is particularly good at finding cures for the various plagues and as such tends to work alone in quarantine, constantly in danger of killing himself with the samples of plague virus he studies.

Appearance: Ilario is tall for his age with mildly tanned skin, black curly hair, a sharp jaw, dark hazel eyes and usually a small amount of stubble on his chin.

Nationality: Italian.

Personality: Ilario is quiet and thoughtful. He's the sort of person happy to sit with people and join in a conversation but more often than not he can be found deep in thought, considering what combination of plants, herbs etc he will try next against the latest virus/ plague he's battling. Ilario is reasonably considerate but he likes to work at a steady pace and will never rush, even when he knows more lives are lost every day. Ilario loves his work and he loves the feeling of success and admiration that comes with it.

History: Ilario lived in Italy until recently but as soon as he heard of New Geneva, he sent his application off and set off without even waiting for confirmation. Ilario lived with just his mother and younger sister.

Dorm: Four people including Matheos.

How many more do we need? Just filling out the dorms or what? I'm just thinking that an overloaded storybook is likely to flop.

I think we can start now -I was planning on starting now, you're right Rubric, too many people is too much hassle. Shall I begin?

Amelia-

Amelia pulled on her green cardigan and flicked her hair out from underneath it. The mirror in her dorm was a little cracked but she made sure it was never dusty.

The clock hands were reaching half past seven, so she called out to her roommates.

"Guys, it's time to get up."

A few of them grunted and rolled over, then after a minute, one of the boys got up. She had been shocked at first at the policy of mixed dorms, but had gotten used to it over the past few months. Walking round in her underwear like she had done in school was, alas, no longer an option. But in general they put the chemists together, the biologists together and the physicists together. There were exceptions, of course, but it meant that often, late night chats were productive.

She opened the door, went down the corridor and into the bright outside air. It was mid-November- late spring in Australia, a fact she still couldn't get used to.

Amelia stretched and began to make her way to the refectory. Around her, people were beginning to head there as well, and she waved as she saw Seven and Mona, two semi-acquaintances, come out of their building.

*let's roll... your characters should all be heading to breakfast*

[Seven Folestion - Botany]

The dark, black sweater that sagged from her shoulders was on the verge of completely falling off. Seven yawned lazily and glanced around the walls that seemed to be made of all the same stone. I wonder how enviormentally friendly this place is, she pondered, looking up at the lights. At least they're floresent... She yawned again, Mona hopping towards her in her usual, peppy way.

A wide grin spread across her face. "Good morning, Seven!"

"Hello," she replied in a soft tone, glancing at the girl and giving a slight smile.

"Goin' to breakfast?"

"No,"

"No?"

"Yes,"

"What?"

Seven shook her head and grinned a little wider, her messy bed-head falling into place just past her shoulders. "Yeah, I'm going."

Mona was quiet for a moment as well as Seven, who pulled her sweater a little farther up. They turned a corner and walked down the hall, talking about food and other things that could be at the cafeteria. Then, just as they turned the next corner and ambled along a little farther, Seven's sharp eyes caught movement other than their own. Amelia was just ahead.

Ben

He checked his watch, frowning a little, Seven thirty. The others should be getting up around about now... He glanced down at the two pieces of uneaten toast by his plate, spread thick with vegemite, then back to the screen of his laptop. It wasn't useful for much anymore, given that the internet had been gone since before he was born, but it saved him having to write everything out by hand.

He scrolled back up the page of notes he'd been working on, genetic manipulation to synthesise 'natural' radiation resistance. He pressed the palms of his hands against his eyes, forcing the sleep away. They'd told him this kind of thing was going to be integral if they were to have any hope of rebuilding Europe and America.

Of course, his research wasn't yet advanced enough to do anything more than prevent radiation sickness for a few years, but permanent residence in just about anywhere in the northern hemisphere was still virtually impossible with that. They'd told him to work with the medicine team, hoping they'd be able to prolong resistance somehow, but he had to finish these notes before he could even hope to contribute, and for him, that meant waking up at five thirty every morning to start working. He'd never admit that to the others, though. They'd only start to worry. I'll just tell them seven, if they ask.

He could hear footsteps in the corridor, probably Mona, Ben doubted that girl even slept anyway, but he couldn't be sure who the others were. He looked away from the laptop screen and over towards the door.

Daddy Long Legs are more closely related to crabs than spiders and somehow the idea of crablike creatures with spider legs that have escaped the entrappings of the primordial sea and now crawl over land and can walk up and down walls and ceilings creeps me more than I can adequately describe.
