Part 1
Vacation
When I heard the news
that my parents were going on
vacation. I was jumping for joy.
“Hailey, your father and I decided we wanted
another honeymoon. Is that fine with you?”
Mother asked in a rhetorical question.
Later that day, dad told me they are planning to
go on a cruise. How nice. Wish I went. Not.
I rolled my blue eyes as I giggled to my
unspoken thought.
I do wonder who I'll be staying with. There are
no relatives close by, that I know of. Maybe...
Oh, I don't know.
The Move
In the next city over, I move in with
my Grandma Essie, who I haven't seen in
ages. Her husband is long gone and has
kids who are already grown up. I wonder
what it'll be like visiting her.
“Hailey, my dear.” She squeezes my
cheeks, until they hurt. I give a happy smile
even though I am not in the mood.
“Grandma, it's great to see you, again.”
She raises a dark brow at my dry sarcasm.
“Come give me a hug.” I put my suitcase on the
pavement and walk over. She wraps her long bony
arms around me and squeezes. A second passes and we
back away. I look up at Grandma Essie and see her
emerald eyes. “Welcome home, Hailey.”
