Chapter Twenty-Three
You need our help
I broke away from Nigel, though it was harder than I thought it would be. He was holding on to me as if his arms were iron chains. However, when he realized what I wanted, he let me go. I backed away from him, but not that far.
“This isn’t right,” I whispered, trying to figure out what I was feeling.
“It sure as hell feels right,” he smirked, holding his arms out for me to return.
“No,” I said in a stern voice.
I couldn’t form coherent thoughts about anything when Nigel was around, but I knew it was wrong. I should be following my plan. My plan to be alone forever disappeared out the window the first time Nigel kissed me.
I had pushed away any feelings for Nigel the moment I knew Jasper was real. He was with Cassandra and, at the time, I was with Jasper. I was happy then too.
Yet, I am happy now with Nigel in my arms. Could it be that Jessica has relieved me of any feelings for Jasper completely? Is that what I even wanted?
Who would want to spend their time crying over someone that’s never coming back? It is a waste of time and tears. This is my time to be happy while my heartache was still numb.
With that, I made up my mind. Living in the moment is what life is all about.
I looked up at Nigel. His arms hadn’t moved but his eyes were starting at me. They had turned into the intensifying blue. His eyebrows furrowed, casting shadows across his face.
I jumped towards him, wrapping my arms around his neck. I crushed my lips against his and got lost in his intoxicating scent.

When I woke up, the sun was peering through my small stained glass window. After so many nights of falling asleep in Jasper’s arms and waking up alone, I almost screamed when I realized that wasn’t the case anymore.
Beside me, white as ghost and cold as stone, was my vampire. Nigel slept soundly, without even breathing.
My heart sank. He couldn’t be dead. It’s just not possible.
I started nudging him but he didn’t stir. “Nigel,” I almost squealed.
“Hmm?” He rolled over and slowly opened his eyes. “’Mornin, beautiful.”
I rolled my eyes. “You scared me half to death!” I turned to roll out of bed, but stopped. “Where are my clothes?” I asked, gathering what sheets I could grab to cover my body.
He leaned over to me. He didn’t have a shirt on and gold only knows what’s under the sheet. Curiosity hit me, and I wanted to know too.
“Nothing happened. Well, something did, but we didn’t have sex. I know that’s what your thinking, but trust me we didn’t.”
“Shh!” I spat at him. “My father should be home. You need to lave. Now!” I raised my hand and pointed to the window.
“Not even a good-bye kiss?” He pouted and unleashed those baby blues and I had no other choice but to obey.
I leaned down and pecked him lightly on the lips. He knotted his fingers in my hair and pressed his lips against mine a second time.
“I can be the good guy, Genna. Please give me a chance to prove that to you.” He smiled and disappeared. My eyes tried to follow him but he was to fast. He stopped at my window. He looked back at me and smiled.
“My offer still stands, you know. You can be one of us if you want to.” He winked. “See you at school.”
When he was out of sight, I groaned and fell back on my bed. I would have to look Cassandra in the face knowing that I slept with her boyfriend.
I tried keeping my head down in homeroom. Cassandra prattled on about her trip into the city and how she bought all these new shoes. How could Onyx and Jessica sit there and take that? Alex, a girl I always forget, stared at Cassandra like she was a goddess. I wanted to scream at her to be an individual, but I knew it would be hypocritical. I stared at Onyx and Jessica the same way, I wanted to be like them.
“I don’t know where he is. I called him this morning to see if he wanted a ride to school, but he said he woke up late and that he’d drive himself.” Cassandra said, glancing at Onyx and Jessica as she filed her nails. “Have you seen him, Genevieve?”
I jumped at the sound of my name. “Who?”
She rolled her eyes and filed even harder at her already short nails. “My boyfriend. Haven’t you been listening? God, Genna, you’ve been so invisible lately. I just don’t know what to do with you.”
My heart was pounding against my chest. I glance at Onyx and she was staring at me with a worried expression on her face. “No,” I managed to say without any cracks in my voice.
When the bell rang, Jessica and Onyx pulled me aside. “He stayed at your house last night.” Onyx said. It wasn’t a question, but an assumption.
“He just showed up, completely unexpected,” I replied.
“Remember what I told you?” Jessica asked. “About being dangerous?”
I nodded.
“That doesn’t just stop at sucking you dry, Genna. Vampires have mind tricks to get their prey to do their bidding. I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you, but Nigel is only messing with your head.”
I only blinked. It couldn’t be possible. He said he loved me.
“After what happened yesterday morning, you told him you didn’t want me to help you. I stopped. I haven’t been taking any pain away from you since then. It isn’t me anymore, it’s Nigel.” When she realized I didn’t understand her, she continued in a more rushed tone. “Nigel is special, a hybrid. I’m not going to go into the DNA crap right now. But he has powers. Powers I don’t even understand, and I’ve seen it all. He can manipulate a human mind without even thinking twice about it. He can read minds and change the way you think. You think you don’t have feelings for Jasper anymore, but you do. Nigel has taken that away from you and replaced it with your infatuation for him. He is playing with your mind, Genna. You need our help.”
Jessica glanced at Onyx. “He is our brother,” Onyx stared. “We know him better than you. Trust us, please.”
The bell rang then. “I have to get to class.” I moved around them and ran to my class.
I sighed as I took me seat, glad it was far from Ms. Avery. She didn’t treat me any different that day. She hated me just as much as I hated her. It was easy to pretend they were all human when they acted normal.
