EDIT
Chapter Seventeen
“So what’s the deal with Bailey?”
Damien and I were still in the car even though we were parked in front of a house that I assumed to be his. The light from the moon gave off little light so it was hard to see what the house looked like from inside the car.
I had crossed my arms over my chest. “What are you talking about?” I asked.
“Maybe I’m just being a crazy vampire, “he said in a mocking tone.” But he is a very smart kid. His mind works so much differently than anyone else I know. He is a very fascinating creature.”
I smiled a little. “He is perfectly fine, in my opinion,” I started. “He is just a little more advanced than the rest of us. The doctor said that his brain thinks its twenty years older than it really is.” I paused, trying to find the right way to explain.
“Go on,” he urged.
I sighed and started pulling at my sweater. “They say that by the time he is middle aged, his brain will work like an old man’s. Bailey is going to be mentally retarded. He won’t be able to function like a normal guy.” My voice turned shaky so I didn’t continue.
Damien didn’t push any further about Bailey.
He got out of the car and did that quick flash movement to my door. He opened it and waited until I stepped out to grab Bailey from the back. Damien cradled him like a baby. Bailey didn’t seem to notice anything. He just continued to dream.
“Nothing could wake him up at this point. C’mon,” he said, jerking his head in the direction of the house.
Instead of following him, I was completely transfixed. His normal pale blue eyes must have disappeared with the sun. His new eyes were an electric blue, like headlights beaming at me.
My mouth dropped open and I couldn’t breathe. They were so beautiful. I must have looked like a baby when you flash a shiny object in front of them.
He chuckled at me as if he knew what I was thinking and started for the house, which made me stop in my tracks again.
It was everything a vampire house shouldn’t be. It was very modern, my guess what that the style wasn’t even a year old. There were floors that went straight up like a concrete condo. It was built into the side of a hill and had wall size windows facing east. There were concrete steps leading up the hill to the black front door.
Damien started up the steps two at a time, barley jostling Bailey. I tried to keep up, but started to fall behind halfway up. I had to slow when it felt like someone had just kicked me in the chest.
Time to hit the gym, I thought to myself.
Damien waited for me at the door, smiling. His uber white teeth glistened in the dim moon light.
“Ready,” he asked, still smiling.
He opened the large black door with ease. I was half expecting it to creek as it opened. However, I sighed with disapproval and disappointment when it opened soundlessly. Damien didn’t look back, but something about his sudden intake of breath made me think he understood why I was disappointed.
He walked over the threshold with Bailey in his arms, and then suddenly disappeared. I gasped and looked around me in the darkness, but couldn’t see anything.
Something cool touched my arm and I flinched. A cold hand took mine and started leading me through the mysterious house.
I ended up walking into a wall and heard someone chuckle. “I’m sorry,” Damien whispered. “I forget sometimes that mortals don’t have that special knack for seeing in the dark.”
I rubbed my arm where it hit the wall. It would definitely be a bruise by the next day. “Where’s Bailey?” I hissed.
“I put him upstairs. He’s sound asleep in my bed.” I could tell that he rolled his eyes by the tone of his voice. He suddenly stopped walking. “We are going upstairs now. Do you need me to carry you?”
I scoffed and pushed forward.
I didn’t get that far before I started tripping over my own feet and making loud ‘flump’ noises as I tried to ascend. He ended up yanking me up in his arms as if I weighed nothing, and jogging up the stairs.
Once I knew we were on the second floor, I started pushing away from Damien. I tried rolling to my side, and almost fell to the ground. However, gravity wasn’t in play here. My whole body was inches from the ground and just stopped.
It was then that I realized Damien had grabbed on to one of my pant loops and held me up. He lifted me higher and with his other hand, flung his arm behind my legs and cradled me again.
“Let’s try this again, shall we?” He said in a mocking tone.
“My I please get down,” I grumbled, understanding his meaning atomically.
He chuckled as he let me down gently. My feet didn’t even make a noise as they touched the ground, which, at the time made me feel like a vampire myself, what with the whole not making any noise when moving thing.
A door somewhere down the hall opened, letting out a flow of yellow light into the hall. Two girls emerged and started giggling at the sight.
“Oh my, Damien,” a familiar voice said. “I’ve never seen you have so much trouble with hostage before.” They girls started to giggle again. “It’s simply hilarious.”
It took me longer than it should to realize who the familiar girls where. They had the same annoying, gossiping, giggle as Jessica and Heather from school. The girl that spoke must have been Jessica.
What are they doing here? I wondered to myself.
As they approached us, Damien went still. He held back my shoulders. One of the girls snapped their fingers and the hall light went on. I had to blink a few times to let my eyes become adjusted.
I had never taken the time to actually look at Jessica and Heather. Heather had long dark red hair that hung straight around her soft white cheeks. Her smile showed her white teeth that were as significant as Damien’s were. Jessica has curly brown hair that flowed perfectly behind her. The curls actually bounced as she walked.
I couldn’t believe that these girls who I thought were completely normal, where actually Damien’s sisters. Vampire sisters to be more specific. My head couldn’t grasp the idea, so I pushed it away for further thought in the future.
They both stopped smiling as I stared at them wide eyed.
Jessica was the one to speak first. “You didn’t tell her?” She rolled her eyes.
Heather spoke next. “Typical little brother. You are so careless with mortals. She could faint any moment now. This is a lot to take it and you just brought her here.”
“Onyx,” Damien spat, still quietly. “Would you stop being such a girl? Seriously, overdramatic much?”
He turned me around so I could look at him. His eyes had gone back to the familiar pale blue. “Are you okay here? Do you feel safe enough for me to leave?” He said each word slower than usual; it made me feel a little dense.
One of the girls behind me, probably Jessica, snickered. “At least we fed when we were supposed to,” she said in a mocking low tone.
Damien looked over my shoulder at her than back to me, still waiting for my answer.
I gulped as I said, “yeah.”
Damien nodded and gave me a hug that was I wasn’t really prepared for. His cold temperature made me shiver. He slipped something into my hand and disappeared down the stairs.
I looked at my hand as I turned to the girls. It was an envelope. Heather wrapped her arm around my shoulder and guided me into a bedroom. She turned on the light. The room wasn’t anything special. It had a black sleigh bed and matching furniture. The wall was completely glass, which was beautiful. It was stained glass, with colorful swirls of blues, purples, reds and yellows. The sunlight must shine through there every morning. A sight to see, I’m sure.
“I think you might want to be alone for a while. Get some rest, okay?” Jessica said, walking backwards out the door.
I nodded and they both left me alone to endure this lamenting journey alone.
