I was considering changing my MC to another character and I was wanting some opinions. I'm having a hard time deciding

Which would make a more interesting main character?

A witch
A sorceress
a phoenix
a wood nymph
a water sprite
A fairy
a goddess
a dragon

none of the above, they are all extremely cliched.

although a goddess fallen from power might be interesting...

I agree with Galerius. Make up your own race--what wold be a great feature for you? Then mix them together, give them a history...

of course, any of these could be original depending on what you did with them. But you'd have to decide exactly what they are in your world. For example - what separates a wood nymph from a faerie? a Faerie from a water sprite? A witch from a sorceress? Come up with your own original idea and you can call it anything you want. Just giving us a bunch of names for things doesn't tell us what those things ARE.

^Agreed.

You can use any of them. It's the way you go about writing it.

For example, say you were to have your main character be a witch. If (s)he has a long nose, green skin, cackles, and wears typical witch clothing, yes, that's cliche. If you have a dragon that is evil and keeping a princess inside a tower, that's cliche.

Now, if you go about it in the right way, adding your own, unique twist to one of those things, you could use any of them.

Whatever works for you.

A water sprite

I've always had a thing for them.
This might be interesting! PM me when you're finished!

I would be interested to see how you would pull off a phoenix- traditionally they are rare and reclusive.

Look, if you can make the decision of changing your character into a dragon, and not have problems with plot or development then you're doing it wrong.

But a water sprite sounds grooviest. (I have no idea what it actually is, though)
there are many problems in our times
but none of them are mine

If you change your main character from a human to any of those and not notice that the story is basically a totally different story than before, there may be something wrong with you.

I wrote a story involving a high school aged goddess who played a mentor role to the main character. She turned out to be quite the Mary Sue. I like the idea of a sorceress.
