The Gemma Doyle Trilogy

I'm sorry if this is a repeated thread, but if it is, I couldn't find it. I just finished The Sweet Far Thing, so I got inspired to write a review.

A Great and Terrible Beauty

As I was reading this, I was slightly bored. It took a certain mindset to read it. A mindset that was never required to read any other book. One of my friends gave it to me on the last day of school, saying that "I must read it." It took me all summer, but I finally got it finished. And, boy, am I glad I did! It was thrilling and heart-stopping and just flat out wonderful.

Rebel Angels

I demanded that my parents bought this for me the second I finished the first one. I read it, and once again, Libba Bray did an amazing job. You think you've got it all figured out, but you don't. Then, you think you've got it all figured out again, and you don't. It keeps you guessing and guessing and then the ending! Ah! It is truly wonderful!

The Sweet Far Thing

I was expecting something completely different from this. I was expecting what everyone would expect, but no! Libba Bray just turned it around and around and around. I even cried. I never cry about anything: movies, books, shows, books, or even real life experiences (although none have been tragic enough to cry over). But this book turned me into a little baby. Truly, an amazing book by an amazing author.

Oh, and did I mention, it takes place in Victorian England? And that the characters are amazingly well-developed? And that Gemma, the main character, is magical, and has visions? And that I loved the books?

OMG!!! I lovede this series. I first saw it in a book store but then saw it in a public library. I then snatched them from the shelves and read them all. Right now one of my friends is reading the books. I am so glad I read them back to back because the suspence would have killed me otherwise.

This is such a lovely series! Libba Bray's writing is beautiful, and funny, and really makes you think about society. It is amazing how she can take a completely different place, time, and situation, and relate it to everyday life.

I loved these! So many twists and turns! They were pretty Gothic, definitely... like that part where Pippa eats the animal... and the white eyes, the girls from the factory, the Poppy Warriors... freaky! Yes, not a book to read on a dark night.

But I loved the contrast of these dark realms where things can go so right and suddenly go so wrong and the Victorian society Gemma's living in. Those parts made me laugh out loud sometimes, and sometimes made me want to cry.

I think Rebel Angels was the best, just my opinion. It had the right balance. Also, I like having the story already founded so that you don't have to spend so long being introduced to the characters and things.

Also (just to point out) Libba Bray went on tour with Shannon Hale! (Hale's my favourite author...)

Only just found this thread... Libba Bray is amazing in so many ways. I can't be bothered at the moment to list them all. ^^ But you guys already know about her talent or you wouldn't be giving glowing reports.

Did I mention A Great and Terrible Beauty is being made into a film? I'm VERY happy, yet also anxious that it doesn't get ruined by this. |:

I really enjoyed this series as well. It was a delightful read.

I love these books too! The characters are well established and are hilarious. The fun games that Felicity, Pippa, Ann and Gemma have in the realms are thrilling. It is a wonderful trilogy and gets better with time. My favorite book in the series is probably Rebel Angels.
