Have you ever held your breath under water for so long that your chest literally felt like it was going to explode? You start to get light headed, and everything that you were thinking to make you even attempt to hold you breath goes away. Well, everyday I was underwater with my breathe held, and my lungs violently convulsing, searching for the last breath of air. I once had the belief that life was a beautiful and precious gift that some Creator or Higher power had given humans. That was until I met the real controller of my life. The force steering my life, were little different colored pills.
It began when I started high school. Everyone knew that you couldn’t start high school without a best friend. I looked around and noticed everyone had claimed their friends. Some dressed alike, which personally I thought was the stupidest thing you could do. Others laughed and talked about their summer vacations. I didn't know anyone so, I walked to my 1st period trying to push certain thoughts out of my head. When I got to my class I noticed a dark haired girl in the back of the class, listening to a lime green iPod. I sat down in the farthest seat in the back, which happened to be next to the dark haired girl. My thoughts were flying, my heartbeat was quickened. My self-esteem wasn’t that great, so choosing to sit by someone was a huge deal. I got all my supplies out of my backpack, and arranged them like I had OCD. Suddenly a tanned hand, with hot pink nail polish popped into my view.
“I’m Lyssa.” the girl next to me said, smiling with teeth that were far too white. I glanced toward her, smiled, took her hand, and said hello. “I’m…uh…Stace.” She dropped my hand and picked up her iPod. “School’s going to be a drag this year. I’ve heard they've already canceled a lot of events because of what those stupid ass seniors did as pranks last year.” She was shuffling through her iPod and the lines in her forehead told me she was concentrating. I decided that I was going to try to be as open as I could so I made causal conversation with her. “Yeah, I’m already stressed and school hasn’t even started yet.” I laughed nervously and looked at her for approval. She turned towards me and smiled again. “I got something that could help with that stress.” Lyssa reached into her purse and looked around before pulling out two yellow pills. “These are my sisters' anxiety meds. Shit makes you feel so good.”
Normally, I wouldn’t have thought about it, but that day I was starting over, so I took one of the pills. That one pill changed my life forever. It does sound funny, one yellow pill altering everything I would do in the next 4 years. But it did. It honestly did.
