I did a little shopping, buying a pair of shoes and two pairs of jeans. I mostly spent my time looking at books in little book shops. I bought one that seemed interesting. I should show it to Jake, it is about witches and vampires.
It was getting late and I had to get home. I was walking to my car when I realized that there was a man following me. I decide to go down a street that was going out of my way; maybe he was just going in the same direction I was going in. Looking over my shoulder, he was still behind me. I turned into another smaller street. There were no houses, just abandoned factories. Stupidly, I walked behind one of them. I could hear his foots steps, which means he was getting closer.
I started running, my heart pounding in my chest. I had no self defense skills what so ever. I ran down another side street. Still no houses in sight. Would any one hear me if I screamed? I was done fore. Trapped in a well, no one can hear me and there is no way out. Not eve Lassie could help me at this point.
There were more footsteps now, pounding the pavement. They were now running after me. Why were they following me? What did I do to deserve this?
Where they going to kill me? Rape me? Rape me then kill me? I had no where to go. They had the upper hand with this one. What could I do except to accept this horrible fate? I stopped running to catch my breath; they were catching up to me, fast.
I blinked and someone was in front of me. A man, a beautiful man, and he was smiling. “Lost your way, Love?” He asked. He had a metallic voice that reminded me of William’s hypnotic voice. His grin grew when I started panting. He had shaggy blond hair and piercing light brown eyes.
I blinked again. Another man, shorter, but still beautiful, was standing beside the first man. I gulped loud and they both chuckled an evil villain’s laugh.
A car pulled up on the side of us. A shiny silver mustang that I was all too familiar with.
William got out of the car, “Get in now!” he growled.
Growled?
I quickly did what he said. Once inside I felt safe and let out a long breath. William stood outside for a moment and it sounded like he was shouting at them but I couldn’t be certain then he got in. “I can’t believe they would attack in public.” He said to himself.
“Who?” I asked.
“And in the daytime never the less. What were they thinking?” he continued.
“Who?!” I screamed. He finally looked at me surprised like he had forgotten I was sitting right next to him.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
I moved my bags that I forgot I even had.
He nodded his head. “There isn’t a store any where near here. What were you thinking? Your father would be furious.”
“I got a little lost,” I said guiltily. Then I shook my head, “Who where they? Do you know them?” I asked my voice stronger.
“They are bad people,” He said then muttered. “If people are what they can be called.”
“Okay then, what are they?” I asked. He took in a large breath then slowly let it out.
“They were,” he had a hard time choking this out, “They are—vampires.”
That took me by surprise.
“Vampires? Like blood sucking bats?” I asked.
“Basically, except for the bats part.”
Still in shock.
“H-how do you k-know them?” I asked, tripping on my words
“I was a part of their coven a few years back.”
“Whoa, whoa wait a minute here. You’re a vampire?”
This was sounding a little too ridiculous. My heart was pounding against my chest, I thought it would pop out.
“Yes.”
This has to be a joke.
“That makes no sense at all. Your not screwing with me right? Because if you are, this isn’t funny.”
He didn’t smile, "Reasonable reaction. But no, I’m sorry to say that this is no joke. Are you okay? You look like your about to feint.”
I ignored him and started talking to myself, “How is this even possible? I thought that was all myths. I’m still sleeping that’s it. This is just a dream.”
He laughed. The stupid prick seriously laughed at me. At least he was in a better mood. You’d think he’d be insulted by my reaction.
“I think that if you were dreaming it would be more like a nightmare.”
Then it hit me, “Are you going to kill me?”
His smile faded and he shook his head. “Your kind doesn’t satisfy my thirst.”
I gasped, “My kind?”
“Humans. They do not interest me in that kid of way.”
I tensed at that moment, “What does satisfy your thirst?” I gulped at the last word.
“We don’t have to talk about if it’s making you uncomfortable.” I stared at him still tense. He sighed, “I do not feed on humans. I feed on animals; I think it’s the more humane way to go. My favorite are grizzly bears.” He smiled. I made a grossed out noise and shook my head as if that would make it go away.
“How did you know where to fine me?” I didn’t really want to know the answer.
“Maybe we should go somewhere to eat. You look like—”
I put my hand up to silence him,”I’m definitely not in the mood to eat or be around people.”
He sighed, “You’re as pale as a ghost. No that’s not it, you’re as pale as me!” he chuckled.
“You’re avoiding my question.” I pointed out.
His clutch tightened on the steering wheel. “Humans have a scent; it is like a fingerprint, always different with each human. Some humans have more attracting scents than others. Normally if their sent is attractive then their blood is very—good.” I looked at him with nothing but confusion, which was all I could feel. “It’s strong, like perfume. That specific coven hasn’t been able to control their hunting instinct yet. And when they smelt your blood, well its more like a call than anything else, they couldn’t refuse to hunt you down.”
“Are you attracted to my blood?” I asked picking at my fingernail.
“I have been able to control myself around humans for a while now, well, enough to control my hunting instinct. Although, your scent is intoxicating, but I know it well.”
“Is that how you found me today, by following my scent? That sounds more like a dog than a vampire to me.” My voice was growing weaker. How could humor him like this.
“No, not exactly. It is very complicated to explain to a human who wouldn’t understand our pull to your kind. You see, as I said before blood calls to us. Depending on if you know the person or not, you can hear them from far away. It isn’t an obvious voice but it’s almost like you can taste their blood on your tongue from miles away. And you can track that person, like they leave a trail for you to follow.” He cleared his throat. “And I followed you.”
I didn’t know whether to be frightened or flattered.
“When a vampire sleeps we dream about things that are going on in your world. You can follow some one specifically. We call it tagging. And in my dream I saw you running away from Zach and Marcus.” I flinched at the names. He didn’t seem to notice. “I knew their coven was in Boston so I came here as fast as I could.”
“You can see the future in your dreams?”
“Basically yes, but nothing is set in stone. For example, today, you randomly changed your mind to go down a side street. I didn’t see that. I had to look into some minds of people walking down the street as well. In crowds, a path can be easily lost if you are not a tracker.”
“You read minds too?”
“Most vampires can. Some humans are easy to read, others come up blank. Similar to white noise and is equally annoying.”
My head was spinning. “Can you read my mind?” I was suddenly nervous. There were so many things on my mind that I want kept away from him. Like how gorgeous he was.
“Sadly, yours comes up blank. Very few people can block out even the weakest vampire.” How easily that word rolled off of his super model tongue.
This is crazy. And of course I was just more curious. I didn’t know much about vampires but the unbelievable beauty he got down. He went out in the day, which isn’t really what most vampires’ I’ve heard of do. He had mentioned that he only feeds on animals –again, not really common– but Louise from Interview with a Vampire did live off of rats for a while so maybe it’s possible. What else….
“Do you sleep in a coffin?”
He chuckled, “Like I’ve never heard that one before!”
“Stop laughing at me!” I demanded.
His face was suddenly serious. “I’m sorry that was very rude of me. Please forgive me.”
His sudden change in mood caught me off guard, “U-um. Yeah sure.”
We were silent for a while. I continued picking at my nails. Why wasn’t I scared of him? I knew enough about vampires to realize that he could decide to kill me and do the job in less than a second.
“Do you have any more questions?” he asked.
I didn’t answer him. I had a million questions, but despite myself none came to me.
“Your family…are they what you are too?” I finally asked.
“Yes, even Alex is one of us. We were all turned together a long time ago.”
I let out a long breath, “How long?”
“To long.”
Well that didn’t answer anything. That must be nice, to not be the only one of your kind around. It’s even better that they are family rather than some strangers. Speaking if strangers…
“Where they going to kill me, Zack and Marcus?” I cringed at the names.
“Yes.” He answered quickly. He wasn’t looking at me anymore, or the road, but at the steering wheel.
“Are you going to take me to my car or…?” I trailed off.
“They are still close, and they have a one track mind. They might try to track you back to your house. I can’t just leave you alone.”
The lack of independence with him was starting to infuriate me. “Look, thanks for saving me tonight but I need to go home now or I will never be able to leave my house again.”
He let out a sigh, “Where do you think I’m bringing you? We’ll be close soon. What’s wrong?”
I could feel the tears bubbling up inside me. “I—I almost died.” I said like I had no control over my own reactions.
He smiled and put a hand on my arm. I flinched at how cold it was and he withdrew it immediately. “It’s over now. You’re safe with me.”
When I got home, my dad had already gone to work. That bought me a few hours for William to get my car back. He had left me plenty of chores to do. I had already took a shower and got ready for bed when Heather called. She had plenty to say about Chris and her day. Chris doesn’t like William and had asked Heather not to hand around him. She said he wouldn’t tell her why, if Chris new about William being a vampire, I could understand.
How could he? I shrugged it off saying that it was just jealousy.
End Chapter
I woke up early Sunday morning to do the chores that I blew off yesterday. My father was still asleep. I finished them in about an hour. I cleaned my room afterwards. I went through all my old cloths and threw them out, along with my old shoes.
After, I started reading again. It took up all of the morning. My father woke up around one and said he was going to work again.
“I see you did your chores, good job.” He was sober now, but I knew it wouldn’t last long. “I want to see the same effort going into your school work. No slacking.” Then out the door, he went.
I continued to read. About another hour went by when the phone rang.
“Hello?” I said,
“Selena, its William.” He sounded hesitant.
“Is everything okay?” I asked, twirling my finger around the curly cord.
He sighed, “Yes. Everything is perfect.” He stayed silent for a few moments then said, “I was wondering if you wanted to go out tonight. The weather is supposed to be cloudy.”
I giggled. “Sure.” I paused, looking around my house for some kind of escape. A date? With a vampire? “W-what time?” I stuttered, and then mentally slapped myself.
“Is seven okay?” He didn’t wait for me to answer before he said, “You should be home by nine thirty.”
“Okay, that’s perfect.” Again, I mentally slapped myself for using the same word he had.
“Great.” He sounded enthused with the idea. “Don’t forget to write your father a note.”
