I like escaping from real life... because sometimes my life doesn't make me happy, I can wallow in different worlds and the imaged misery of other people so my own misery is insignificant.
I can explore life and people and myself that way!
It's also brilliant to see a word count expand, to grow to like characters you've created. And it's an achievment to have written something you like and are happy with even a bit, when it's been a lot of hard work to get it down.
